Computer Mayhem

I work for the county health department now, and when they upgrade their computer systems, they sell their old stuff for cheap. Systems (minus HDs because they can contain patient info) went for $15 and monitors went for $5. After I got my purchases home, yurei pulled together all of the computer hardware in the apartment and took a picture. We had to stitch two snapshots together because there was no way to get it all in one frame:

Porter and yu^rei's Pad

The chest behind the "Centris 650" is affectionately referred to as my "Radio Shack" by everyone who's seen inside. There are enough parts in there to build 3 more complete computers.

Also, if you're curious as to why there is a blanket over the window, it's not because we've become allergic to sunlight (though that wouldn't surprise me) but rather that it needs to be dark for the LCD projector to give a crisp image:

EDIT:: The blurriness is from yurei's camera phone, not the LCD.

What could you possibly need all that stuff for? You can't possibly have a use fore EVERY SINGLE ONE of them (like you would with guitars )?

The new systems I bought, or all the machines in general? Just in terms of the ones I bought from the health dept.; it's the RAM actually. PC133 is climbing in price because production of it has slowed down significantly. 128MB can cost you around $50 nowdays, so an old system that has even 1 chip in it for $15 is a steal. I still have a lot of older machines I maintain for people (my mother, PK, SlightOfCode, iCabbit, etc) that use PC133 and could always use the speed boost. So the answer to how I afforded it was that I didn't-- I'm just passing the cost off to each and every person I give RAM to. $15 is a steal for them too, considering they get it installed for free by me to boot. So yeah, the draw for all the systems was just to strip them for parts and toss them. Anybody want any P3 550 systems with ati rage 128s in them, but no ram and no HD? I'm selling them at a fair price: $25 plus shipping.

The monitors were all bought FOR people as well-- I'm only keeping two of them, so I only actually spent about $10 on those.

It's only a fair price, if we don't know what you paid for them Porter.

Still being a struggling student and all I won't begrudge you a chance to make a little money.

I would just like to note that, even though I don't "live" there, three of the computers (the silver PC, G4 and 12" Powerbook on the left side) and two of the monitors on the floor are mine. Don't give Porter and Yu'rei ALL the credit.

Btw Porter, how many of those did you actually pay for?!?

Yeah, I've been pretty fortunate in that regard. My iBook is yu^rei's old machine which came to me for a very small amount of money, my G4 was a Christmas gift from yurei and Yuna, my Shuttle PC was a gift from Yuna, and most of the PCs and monitors I bought from the county auction are being sold off again...

Yeah, I haven't actually spent money on a computer in a couple years.

Just an FYI, the big white space that you are refering to is where the projector shines on the wall, if there was art work on that wall, we'd be watching TV over it. There is, however, something on just about every other wall in the apartment.
