It's all a custom PHP backend written by Ryo originally and recoded by me. It exists in one place in the entire world: here on CSR. Trust me, it wouldn't do you a whole lot of good to have it, but boy does it make my job easy!

Technically if you know what you're doing, you can modify ANY forum package. Personally, I'd suggest learning HTML and PHP (since you can do *anything* you want with that), but that may be more work than you're willing to put into it.

PHP is a pretty straightforward cross between Perl and C++. If you know either of those, you're well on your way to knowing PHP. Unfortunately, it's not a very good language to learn programming on for the first time because of the weird paradigm it uses to interact with web pages. It was enough to throw even myself off for a while.

I'd suggest learning another easy scripting language first (nothing that begins with "Visual") and then worry about PHP. There are lots of good books that can help you though, such as The PHP Black Book (by Coriolis), and after you know the basics of the language, the only thing you ever need is the function reference in the online manual on the PHP website.

I tried learning php once from cold. Only other language I have used is Java. I found it pretty tough going personally, and could only churn out some pretty bland webpages that could be done a lot faster in dreamweaver/flash. So I gave up on it.

Ah, but Flash doesn't have nearly the same power (or purpose) that PHP does. PHP let's you turn your web browser into an entirely different application, Flash mostly makes things move around in response to user input.

Flash = the debil.

I didn't want to phrase it that way, but yes, I tend to agree. Flash is good for cheesy online games, and not much else. No serious web developer should ever allow a client to insist on a flash-based site except in the [very] rare situations where it actually facilitates communicating your message with your audience instead of hindering it.

Flash can make very good websites though...

It doesnt have to be all about stupid animations all over the place, it can be to control fields with clicks to replace part of the viewable area with a menu or info for example...

All true, but you show me one website that uses Flash in this very appropriate and level-handed manner, and I'll show you a hundred that are nothing more than a waste of the bandwidth they take to download.

Finding a site that uses Flash appropriately is like finding a Windows machine without a virus or spyware on it.

Yeah, looks nice:

...and here's what your site looks like for somebody that doesn't have Flash.

If I were a potential customer thinking about contracting you to build MY website, I certainly wouldn't be calling any time soon.

That's exactly why Flash should never be the only form of navigation for a site. If you don't have it, then the ENTIRE SITE is totally useless and inaccessible. If you are going to use Flash for navigation, there should always be a backup; whether it be a site map, or old fashioned links embedded underneath the Flash sections.

I think flash is best used for teaching/tutorials.  That is where its true potential really shows.  I can name a  TON of good flash tutorials. a TON.
