Some slighty artwork

Just figured I'd share.

This is something I'm working on for the dropline community. It is meant to be used as a desktop background. The image you see is of the GNOME desktop logo (a 4 toed footprint) - the Dropline GNOME logo replaces the big toe with a star. The image was made using blender, an open source 3d modeling software program that I have been using for some time. The render was done with full raytracing and material elements only, the faces of the model have not been textured.

Any feedback is welcome. Remeber, my hope is to have this included as one of the background options for the next Dropline release (coming up in a few weeks), and I'd like to have it be pleasant on the eyes, but dynamic and visually complex all at the same time. I've also included a screenshot of the image in action. Feel free to download and give it a go if you like.

full size render (1280x1024)

Sweet! I was looking for a new background.

Care to explain the star?

Dropline (which is what this project is made for) is a modified version of GNOME designed to work on slackware systems. The old dropline logo was a circle with a star in it - someone came up with the idea to meld the GNOME foot logo with the Dropline star logo (i.e. replace the big toe with a star), and hence the new logo was born. :-)

Hmmm.... you bring up a good point though. I might modify this one to fit the actual GNOME logo (without the star) and submit it to art.gnome.org. :-)

The star's shap combined with the ray tracing does look quite cool though

Here's an even better one - behind the cube has been made transparent so that you can control the color with Gnome's default color.

Full-sized with alpha

Sweet!  Nice work slighty, graphics like this are totally astonishing to me.  I think I'm gonna need to learn up on them a bit and maybe try my hand at it.  GL and hope it gets used.

The renders that that program outputs are nothing compared to those of maya or 3dsmax...but they are expensive (and free )

That looks really nice though. I like the simplistic look and feel of it.

I found blender to be much easier to use than 3D Max, once I learned the interface. I think blender is hard though if you have never done any modeling before at all - but it certainly has an advantage over crap like milkshape and some of the other modeling programs available.
