Porter is going to go nuts for this one.  'Caprica' will be set 50 years before BSG and center around the creation of the Cylons.  I admit that BSG is a great show and thank Porter for getting me hooked, but to quote someone from /. is this going to be 'like that episode where Starbuck takes her Raptor and jumps it over that tank of space sharks?'

Could be interesting though...

Okay first, Starbuck is a Viper pilot, not a Raptor pilot. Second: space sharks?!? C'MON!

...okay seriously, this is the first I've heard about it, but like most things, I'll reserve judgement till I get to watch it. I wouldn't underestimate Ron Moore though.

Thanks for the heads up yurei!

Could be amazing, could be a trainwreck. My biggest problem is that they intend to do stuff with the Adama family. Can you say continuity minefield?

Incidentally, I just watched The Captain's Hand which just aired. I have to say I haven't been at all impressed with the recent run of episodes since the solid Resurrection Ship.

This is what I genuinely dislike about TV. Every time an interesting and unique show comes around, the first instinct is to spinoff, sequel, prequel, and blatantly rip it off.

That being said I am a huge BSG fan, so I can pretend that I won't watch it at first. The guy is certainly talented, but to me, it sounds like a little bit of a cash-in on the success of the series.

Indeed. I don't see why they can't deal with this back story stuff in the show itself.

Don't forget she's also an accomplished Cylon Raider pilot, the episode where she crawls inside the one with the dead gooey, icky, cylon still in it really pissed me off btw. I mean there was a big hole in the hull of that ship so how did she survive the vacuum of space when she flew it away?

And why would there be a person sized cavity inside a Cylon ship?
And why would it be possible to pilot the ship by squeezing bits of intestinal tubing?
And how the hell did this episode get past quality control?

woohoo I haven't hijacked a thread in a long time.

.... and another thing why are the Cylons such lousy shots?

They seem to spray and pray an awful lot you'd think they'd have better aim.

That's actually discussed in the commentary for that episode. Apparently they did a ton of research about it. People have been too desensitized by 'Alien'-type "being sucked out into space" things. In other words, pretty much every other space movie/show you've ever watched has WAY over-sensationalized that aspect. There just isn't that much difference between 0 and 1 atmospheres and apparently a space suit stuffed in the hole WOULD be enough to hold the pressure at least long enough for the half-hour trip back to Galactica.

As for some of the other questions (these aren't intended to be "answers," just counter-points): if you were going to interface a biological being with a machine, would you not perhaps use muscular twitches to activate electrical and mechanical switches? (Hmm, this sounds kinda like what people do when they drive a car!)

As for the person-sized cavity, well, who knows how big a Raider's "brain" has to be? Sure it convenient, but so is the fact that they never address the artificial gravity that seems to be in effect inside all of the ships from Raptors on up. It's called "suspension of disbelief."

I guess it comes down to what makes a show "good" in your mind.

Does it fit your perception of how things should behave? Or is it scientifically accurate? Is it enjoyable to watch regardless of either? Which one pulls you out of being absorbed so badly that it makes you realize you're watching a TV show?

To me, most of the arguments are quibbles. So what if Starbuck really would (or wouldn't) have been sucked out into space-- the show was still absorbing enough to entertain me, and that's a tall order!

[shrug] 2 cents.
