I just ordered one

The announcement made my jaw drop. I had the money set aside for an 20" iMac, but I am pretty sure this is what I want.
Total beast of a computer. Four processors, hell yeah.

Mine is the stock config since I can't wait for a BTO.

Going to have to order myself some RAM now.

Congrats on the Macbook. For a laptop, Mac is the way to go. The core duo is way fast for a portable.

My iBook g4 is going to seem so friggin slow now.... a Macbook may be in my future too.

Life is just better on a Mac, especially now that I've almost completely purged myself of games.  Garage Band and a Line6 TonePort is a blast. If I didn't suck horribly on the six string, I'd post a clip of something but no dice.

T-Rex, what are you going to do with all that computing power? Find the meaning of life? The cure for the common cold? A low budget indie flick?

Hehe, Garage Band is pretty badass. If only I had a shred of musical talent...

Interestingly enough, the latter. Miscreant, myself and a couple of other friends are entering in a couple 48/24 hour film competitions and we need an editing rig to run Final Cut. This one will do.

Otherwise, I need it for bragging rights. It will have processors #10 through #13 in my computer army.

It's a machine that will continue to be awesome for many years to come. I figure that it will continue to be a heavy-duty desktop for the next 5 years as long as I keep the ram stocked up. At that point it should be a pretty good media center since it should be able to decode 1080p movies without much trouble.

Wow, a Mac love fest and I haven't even posted yet! What in the heck is this board coming to??

I've been avoiding the forums because I haven't had a chance to watch the WWDC keynote until just now. There's lots of fun stuff coming around the bend with Leopard... and a few yawners in there too. Overall though, very cutting edge. Apple's doing things with their software that nobody else in the industry is even thinking about yet, and the stuff that will be included in Leopard is going to make Vista look like Windows 98. I can't wait.

Anyway, I wish I had a spare 2.5K laying around for a new tower, but it ain't in the cards. My Dual 1GHz rig will have to serve me for a while still. Congrats on yours Terraji, and to SG for his MacBook!

It's incredibly gratifying to have people previously of an entirely "peecee" persuasion saying how much they enjoy their Macs. Cheers gents!

The amount of people switching is really getting absurd. Two of the guys in my reasearch group have their first Mac laptops on the way. A bunch of the people I know who don't have one are openly speaking favorably of them.

It's kind of funny how the keynote went. The best sales pitch for the mac pros were the Leopard features being shown off. All that crazy eyecandy would not run very well on my iBook and was making me cringe a little. Dashboard is already takes 5-6 seconds to load every time with a mere 10 widgets. I can only imagine waiting for the extra loading of a couple of Safari pages for Webclips on top of that. That is where 4 processors will certainly come in handy.

The best part about it all is knowing that apple plans on actually using all these multicore processors they are shipping in their products. With adding additional integration between their apps along with the virtual desktops they are really embracing and encouraging the multi-tasking nature of the OS which makes me fill with glee.

It saddens me that Windows users will be stuck in the one-app-at-a-time-always-fullscreen mode for years to come.

Nice.

The fans on that thing look huge. How loud or surprisingly quiet is that beast?

Sweet! Those screens look awfully familiar!

I sure do like the 2007FPW's more than the 2004's though. Not only is the built-in software tons nicer, the casing design is a lot more attractive. I have dual 7's at work and dual 4's at home and probably couldn't work any other way now.

The beast is pretty damn quiet. It looks like there is three fans in total (maybe one more in the power supply, I havent spent alot of time poking around inside) and they all spin very slowly. There is a slight hum, though it is very comparable to my other machines that I built to be as quiet as possible. Even when I was encoding 45 minutes of dv footage into H.264 which took about two hours. The CPU usage was at 250% for the duration and the fans did not seem to speed up.

The only noise that bothers me is the hard drive seek noise which is noticibly louder than any of my other hard drives. It could perhaps have something to do with the aluminum mounts being vibrationally coupled to the case. Only having a gig of ram while mega-multitasking is not helping either.

I put XP pro on it, however there are no video drivers available yet, so it was VGA-tastic. The Geforce 7300 is roughly comparable to my 6800 in terms of fill rate, so I am expecting about 80fps in CS:S.

I am a big fan of the 2007wfp. It looks sleeker than the 2005fpw, but the image quality is identical as far as I can tell. The only limitation on the 2007 is that it cannot be raised as high. The 2005 goes about two inches higher which is nice if you want to use a laptop underneath it. I will probably pick up another 2007 once my bank account recovers a bit. They are getting awfully cheap. I got that one for $434 shipped a month ago compared to $600 for the 2005 a year ago.

You mean you have to actually get up and sit back down to reach the other computers?!?

That would drive me nuts! That's actually one of the best things about the Dell LCDs: the dual inputs. I can connect up to 4 computers to my two monitors and can switch between them using the button on the front. It just wouldn't do to have to switch desks to switch tasks!

In a perfect world, I would have all those to myself 24-7, but there is someone else special in my life who needs a computer too.

But yes, they are all mine, I have the bank account (or lack thereof) to prove it.

She thinks it is pretty absurd that I use 3 computers at a time as it is.

What would be nice is if OS X could support multiple desktop user logins simultaniously from different monitors and different mice and keyboards like x.org does on Linux. The Mac Pros certainly have capable hardware. If that were possible, I would put the Mac Pro on the VGA input of the monitor on the Linux side. Now that would be sweet.

I wouldn't be surprised if it were possible. That's essentially what fast user switching is anyway, and the only part that would be unique would be directing a specific keyboard/mouse to a specific Desktop.

I have googled on it a bunch, and it is not possible with Tiger. Which is expected since it wouldn't help Apple sell any more hardware. The only way Apple would consider it is if Microsoft were doing it first.

This is one of the pitfalls of a closed-source system, holding back useful innovation in favor of making more cash. I curse capitalism for ruining my geek enjoyment.

At the same time, it's not just an economic hurdle. How many people would really need (or know how to use) what would essentially be an Apple mainframe system limited to 2 users and tied to the physical location of the tower? It's just too rare an occurrence that two people who happened to sit next to each other would need to share a single system at the same time. System crashes (if they ever happened) would bring down both users. How do you handle both users updating the same file at the same time? There's an endless string of questions that comes along with this scenario.

That said, I wouldn't mind seeing a more traditional X Window style  networked interface that allowed for a VNC style connection, but wasn't limited to controlling just the single console Desktop. Multiple user graphical network login "shells", in other words. THAT would be handy.

Oh, you mean like how Linux VNC shells work, or Windows RDC shells work, or how X11 forwarding shells work... all of the competition does it, but not apple. Well, one could possibly bring x11 content from a mac-os server to a local client, but that wouldn't help with most of the mac os applications.

As for the Mac Pro - congratulations!

I spent the weekend filming and editing a movie for a 48 hour film competition. Fooljeff and Miscreant both had minor roles. I am working on getting it out on the Internet. As soon as that happens I'll put up a link.

One gig of memory was grossly insufficient for video, but the encoding was crazy-fast. A sweet rig for sure once I get some more ram.

I uploaded a high-quality version of our to archive.org with a creative commons license.

http://www.archive.org/details/IdlyByeFilmsRememeberingRaymond

Go ahead and download it if you are interested. its about 600mb, and It will need a bit of horsepower to decode in real-time. It is encoded in H.264 and AAC audio. Quicktime or VLC will handle it without problems.

I wouldn't mind some criticism if you feel at all inclined. It is definitely a little rough and makes me cringe in a few places everytime I watch. It gets shown in front of 230 people in a theater on the 31st and I am a litlle nervous. Despite this, I feel quite good with it for a first venture into filmmaking.

As soon as I have a lower-quality more manageable version up somewhere I will post another link.

I'll let me G4 chug on this download while I'm at work today.

Edit: There is a spare 'e' in the download link. Try this:

Edit 2:

UGH! They must limit their download speed. Mine's running at only 40KBps right now! Estimated time remaining? 4 hours.

When I tried it went along at 100kb/sec for a while, but then sped up to 1MB/sec (university fiber line) so it must depend a lot on usage.
