i was on a server the other day when an admin threated to ban me because of my rates.  I asked him what was wrong with them and he said "they're way way too high".  He'd told me to sort them or else - so i ignored him and he booted me.  I'm not bothered cos I've never had anyone else complain and i reckon he was just being a loser.

I play with:

rate = 9999
cl_cmdrate = 90
cl_updaterate = 85

i use netgraph or whatever it is and i occasionally get like 1 or 2 loss or choke but not a lot.

I take it there isn't anything obviously wrong with these settings?

Also what rates do you guys use?

And are there any other rates that he might have been complaining about?

Cheers guys

You could have asked him what he wanted you to change them to!

Anyway here is a rate table:

Y'know, what you should have done is taken his email address off the serverinfo - cos they usually have admin's emails in case of problems or hackers.  Then found out if he used forums or hotmail or something and tried to track down his name and hopefully home address.  Then paid him a visit with a 5 iron and sculpted him a new visage.

LAN
cl_updaterate "40"
cl_cmdrate "100"
rate "25000"

LOL, that website is a little out of date.  I'd surely max out rates on lan unless you vid card isn't running 100+ fps.

The rates are also backwards: you should be more worried about GETTING more updates FROM the server than GIVING them TO the server! HLDS has to get information about 19 other people TO you, and information about 1 person FROM you-- your download rate should always be higher than your upload rate. It doesn't do a darned bit of good to be telling the server what you're doing a hundred times a second if you're not letting the server tell you if there's an enemy in front of you more often than 10 times a second.

Well does someone actually know the optimum rates?

Wouldn't more of your hits count if you were sending more packets to the server regardless of how many you are recieving?

Big deal if they count or not-- your screen isn't getting updated enough because your settings are choking the data coming in from the server. If you can't even SEE if there are enemies in front of you what good is it to be sending hundreds of updates? And honestly, I don't think it makes a difference. The server normalizes for the varied rates of the connected players anyway. The only difference is that you might SEE more of your hits counting if you're getting more frequent updates, whereas a 56k-er might not actually SEE it, but the server would register it "behind the scenes".

The basic principle behind setting your rates is "informed decisions". You need to know what everyone else is doing in order to make appropriate decisions about what YOU want to do, Hence, it's more important to be getting data than to be sending. Plus, info about 19 people "weighs" more than info about 1 person, so the incoming rate should always be higher.

As for "optimal" settings, you really need to experiment for yourself. rate is measured in bytes per second (10000 = about 9.8KB/sec), so you can figure out how much your connection allows and set that accordingly first. (Keep in mind the max that is hardcoded into the program is 20000.) Then keep upping your cmd and update rates until you start seeing choke on your netgraph, then back it off by 5 on each and you should be set.

In a fps game if your shots can hit more it is a big deal.  Not that this is ever a real issue though because I don't know of anyone that has a higher upload then download.

Nittany's right.

The ideal rates are cl_cmdrate 101, and updaterate 101.  I gover my rates from server to server.  I raise them as high as possible for each server while i'm still getting 0 loss and 0 choke.  In csr i use about 35cmdrate and 40updaterate.  But for most other servers as well as usually always in matches i am able to have 101 for both while still holding 0 loss and choke
