I don't know why everyone gets down on Metalica (unless it's because they've mellowed out)...they were always proponents of bootlegs of their concernts, one of the first bands (behind the Greatful Dead of course) that was really known for it. Their whole issue was that studio recordings = income stream.
If someone gives you half their sandwich, and asks you to pay if you want the other half, that doesn't sound so bad to me. And anyone who says you don't deserve to make any more money once you've made a couple million, stand still, I'm gonna smack you in the head.

Al those long hair freaks who turned on Metalica when they went mainstream is so rediculous! It's the nature of the beast and they deserve to tap into all the money out there, look at what the Rap Stars are raking in! Stolen music, 99% got the capitol from selling drugs and they are making millions! How does a fan denounce a band like Metallica and all they have accomplished just because they go main stream! Misery sure does love company! I don't care what anybody says a Metalica concert is a amazing experience, the crowd is like one mass of movement, it's like going to a cult gathering and the music sucks you in! Spits out forked tounge at Surgeon!

Yeah, I take it you have been to a Met concert. I refuse to go because the last two times they've came to Philly is on the Sanitarium and with Godsmack. I wouldn't waste my money to see the other acts.
From what I've read, they don't play anymore than one or two songs from their latest album. They're wise enough to know that the reason people come to see them is to hear stuff off of Kill Em' All, Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning, ...And Justice For All, and maybe even the Black album. That's because that music was actually good. They used their talent back when they wrote that stuff. The lyrics are intelligent and thought provoking (like most decent metal) and the music is heavy, loud, and contains blistering solos (back when Kirk was cool). When they wrote St. Anger (or St. S***TY as I call it) they got away from all of that. The lyrics were so stupid and mind numbing, that a third grader could have done better. The music was played on guitars tuned to D (that's a mortal sin in the metal world. Though EVH pulled it off on Unchained ). They also did not have a single guitar solo on the album. They effectively became a nu-metal band minus the fat guys. Playing nu-metal is what is "popular" in the metal genre (god knows why?  ) and hence Metallica sold out.
I'm going to steal their old music because they no longer make good music that is worth buying. Though I would go to their shows if they rolled into town with a decent opener.
This is why you don't want to get me into a discussion about music.

Obviously it's flawed logic.
My thinking is that if your not around still making good music, why buy your music if you're not likely to go out on tour? I want to see you rock, not sit back and count your pennies. (Though metallica is an exception in the fact that they still tour, but they still play their garbage as well as the good stuff)
The people still out there making good music and likely to go on tour and continue to kick ass, I'll support and buy their stuff. Black Labels Society is amazing and I want to see Zakk Wylde and Co. tear it up, I bought a cd of theirs and enjoy it daily.
As for Metallica, I didn't buy their new stuff either, I saw the music video and nearly died laughing, they've made themselves into a total joke. I want to see the documentary and laugh until the cows come home. I'll probably just download it.

One last thing to tack on to my discussion about the economic end of things.
I'm a musician (or at least I try  ) and I make music for the sheer joy of playing. Hopefully most musicians are like "damn this is so much fun, I love doing this!". The good/popular ones might also think "wow I can make some serious money" in addition to the first thought. From the most beloved famous band in the world or some group struggling to scrounge up enough gas money for the drive to the next gig it shouldn't matter if they buy your recoreded material. A musician's bread and butter is your live performances and people won't show up if they don't know about you. File sharing gets your music in the hands of people that may potentially see your show. Hmm see $2 from a cd or $15-20 on a ticket (say $40-$50), what would you rather see?
Though in the end as a musician you shouldn't give two craps about people buying your music, or even showing up at their shows. If they're not having fun what's the point of tuning your 6 string in the first place?
