Suggest maps for the league here.
At the current time there will be a total of 7 maps. 1 each week.
Maps are limited to de_ and cs_ only. Custom maps will be included.

My suggestion:
Week 1: de_inferno (fairly well known map to kick things off) Week 2: cs_italy (mix things up with a CS map) Week 3: de_torn (gorgeous map not common to wars) Week 4: de_dust2 (the most popular map on the server) Week 5: cs_siege (notoriously campy but 3v3 could change that) Week 6: de_aztec (build up to the finale with some skill coming into play on azzy) Week 7: cs_reloaded_b4 (finish it on our own map which should get everyone to perfect their strategies on it beforehand)

Custom maps will be included.
|
| Is this statement included just so you can get away with putting b4 in there or are would you seriously consider playing a good custom map? I'm not talking like mill or fire, (though I think mill should be in there) something cool like karachi or sahara.
With your suggestions, I like torn and b4, but siege just doesn't do anything for me.

Nice list justboy. Although i would replace cs_siege with cs_office. And replace de_torn with de_dust. Shogun would be pretty cool too.

You said exactly what I was thinking about having b4 be the final map. Other than that I'm cool with pretty much anything you like. I do think a couple "non-regular" maps would be a good idea and a good show for team work. Just a thought

I have a map in progress which we could well use as the official 'map of the tournament'. It shouldn't take long to get finished (it's not big or complicated) and it should be perfectly fair since the layout will be reflected. The final version is going to have extensive entity stuff going on but I could make a stripped down version first and just add _csr to the end of the name or something. Thoughts?

Phoenix Knight - good call on cs_shogun_final, I love the textures and layout on that map. However, I must say one thing - DEATH TO CS_MICE_FINAL!!!
I actually played in a tourney on www.jolt.co.uk a couple of years ago called "Honey I Shrunk the CTs". It was good fun but the advantage is always with the people with decent computers cos the r_speeds are ridiculous.
Surgeon G - I'm happy to involve decent custom maps. And I don't just mean mill or fire. I've played squillions of customs and there are some beauts out there - but I'm also keen to make the tourney accessible to everyone so I stuck with officials in my suggestions.
Thumb - I think office may end up in the final selection as it seems like a pretty popular cs_ map on CSR. However, I get so tired of de_dust and would rather it wasn't played unless it's on everyones lists. I think we can kiss cs_siege goodbye too
Grounded - If you can finish it and make it good by mid July then I don't see why not. We should definitely have one of our CSR team's maps and I do worry that b4 is just a tad big for 3v3.
Also - do you remember the guy who made as_tigris? He had a bunch of cool maps I'd like to see again - what was his name?

Stroggos and Blader made as_tigris. Stroggos also made de_ritual, de_abou, de_outrage and probably lots of others. I checked his homepage but it isn't there any more.

de_just would be cool but then I am of course massively biased seeing as I influenced the name.
If we're looking for quality custom maps outwith CSR this Stroggos guy is the man. de_abou is the treats and there was another cs_ one set in like an arab town in the desert which was shiny.

I think the advantages of custom maps are that for the most part, people are unfamiliar with them. People might know the layout, but they wouldn't know where the usual camping spots are and what not. Therefore teamwork is required to overcome this. And besides custom maps are generally just a helluva lot nicer that the standard ones. That just got me thinking, maybe for the standard maps we play _cz versions? Look cooler but they have the same layout.

Maybe try to put more regular maps then customs. And try to make the custom maps the popular ones.

I think the less standard maps the cooler this would be. Custom maps are generally superior in every way. I mean we are CSR, we do things differently and lets make our little game here something special.
shogun, karachi, b4, just (if its finished, simliar to dust) = def should be in this
I just downloaded de_volare, its amazing. People should check it out.

The only customs in the rotation are deuceball, upc and b4 I think. As for votable customs I think de_747, de_karachi01 and a few others can technically come up although I'm not sure.

custom maps can be fun at times...but i think "regular" maps should make up the majority to be used in the tourney with maybe 1 or 2 custom and the rest "regular."

I'm with SG-- we're CSR darnit. The more (quality) customs, the better. I am sick to death of dust, aztec, office and the rest. I can't believe you people voting for these can still play them. You seriously have no ability to get bored and I publicly stick my tongue out at you for being so silly.
Bring on the customs.

YEAH AH! People agree with me. I mean I can play in any old tournament where its dust2, aztec, and processed garbage. Sure that's fun, but that's not CSR fun. We serve a different blend of CS here (or at least I'd like to think so; though it gets watered down so more people will play here, but thats another story), and our tournament should reflect that. It seems we're going to have a fair turnout for this so it should be more than possible. All you people that are just dust2 whores (and we have a few of them), open your eyes. Your missing out on the better part of this game.

Custom maps for the league....
Unless we plan on making this a custom map only league...
But how do you play on customs! Maybe some are ok, but the real STRATS are the orginal maps. Thats where its at!
Playing all custom maps seems all to random if there not good. Maybe if you got a 5 vs 5 we could then have all custom maps.
I hope i sparked something here

|
| You really care that much about winning? Assuming I go through as planned, I'm going to show up and play it by ear. All the custom maps I may have played once or twice with other people or by myself looking around them seeing if they're legit. Nobody will have any advantage it will require teamwork to beat out the other team. That's what CSR is about and thats why this tournament should be custom map only. Here's a strat for you: http://www.fender.com/new_repository/fender_guitars/images/0117402_xl.jpg. Seriously just stick together, kick some ass, and take some names.
Playing all custom maps seems all to random if there not good. Maybe if you got a 5 vs 5 we could then have all custom maps.
|
| I wouldn't want to play crappy custom maps either. We ensure quality ones. 5v5 is impossible. At the most we could have is 5 teams. That's assuming all the regulars wanted to play and/or could show up.
Bottom line, I'm playing for fun, not to win. I think a lot of people feel the same way. If I'm wrong oh well, its just the vibe I get here.

Did i say anything about winning or loseing sg? I just want to see what the others are going to do when it comes down to it. Useing strategies does require teamwork. Id rather play de_dust2 then some map ive only played twice and wonder around it looking for the bombsite.
Week 1: de_inferno (fairly well known map to kick things off) Week 2: cs_italy (mix things up with a CS map) Week 3: de_torn (gorgeous map not common to wars) Week 4: de_dust2 (the most popular map on the server) Week 5: cs_siege (notoriously campy but 3v3 could change that) Week 6: de_aztec (build up to the finale with some skill coming into play on azzy) Week 7: cs_reloaded_b4 (finish it on our own map which should get everyone to perfect |

***I really like what jb has introduced
Instead of this argument going around id rather see these maps played, excluding cs_siege.

I don't think the maps are going to be picked the day of. You'll more than likely have time to run through them, learn the map a bit, and even come up with "STRATS" if you so desire.
I don't know about you, but it seems to me (and by all means correct me if I'm wrong) that for you Winning = Having Fun. For me that's not always the case, as illustrated by Tuesday night's time on nuke. I always have fun playing custom maps, they look so nice and usually have good layouts, and make for intereseting game play. I have fun playing on them regardless of whether I get my ass handed to me or do the whooping. Maybe I'm playing the wrong game...

I don't think we should go overboard with custom maps (as much as I enjoy them). For some of us playing customs is fun, for others it's not. I think we should try and cater to as many people as possible. I'm happy to play any of the old stalwarts - it's been absolutely ages since I played any kind of match

How come there can't be "real" strats on custom maps? That sounds a little close-minded to me.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.... I think that having fun is winning. You can have fun when loseing, but if you lose all the time and still have fun, errr........
To me useing different strategies is what i find fun. I also like playing against people who have better strategies even though I may lose to it, then I have an idea of how to counter that next time.

If you guys feel up to it maybe you can set up a all custom map tourny, after this one takes place.By all meens we have no problem leting you guys use our server for it.

good choice and I'm sure this idea has been put forward but cs-office is a great map - surely better than cs_siege? Although I do tend to prefer office when the teams are bigger - might not work so well with 3v3.
maybe we could have one more custom map in? not too many tho as I like the custom nights - surely we can have some more of them after the league?

The foot goes down here a bit .
The maps will be a balance between customs and officials.
It is CSR after all. We play with a mix of customs and officials on the server all the time.
On the CZ maps front - I've not seen any of them yet. I am new .
Also, thanks for all the input so far guys - I think we're getting towards a final 7. The full list and framework will be up pretty soon at this rate .

A tourney map is still being prepared by me. Whether it will make the cut is another matter entirely...

But how do you play on customs! Maybe some are ok, but the real STRATS are the orginal maps. Thats where its at! |
|
How come there can't be "real" strats on custom maps? That sounds a little close-minded to me.
|
|
It's difficult to make strats when you don't know where the bomb sites are.

Why would i waste my time downloading and trying to find out the routes, bomb sites, and hostage sites. When i could just play dust 2. It's not even that i'm lazy i just don't like custom maps. I've played plenty and the only ones i've ever had fun in was rats, shogun, and b4. Why would i waste my time trying to figure out the map when i wont play it again for months and by then i will have to figure it out again.

This is why custom mappers are usually so miserable. People don't take the time, they just dismiss them out of hand. There are plenty of awesome custom maps out there (and plenty of crap ones as my resume proves ) that are both beautiful to look at and technically well balanced. To say otherwise is to lie.
"Why would i waste my time trying to figure out the map when i wont play it again for months and by then i will have to figure it out again."
How about to try something new, break the routine? How about to support the efforts of custom mappers? I'll try any map once because I know someone has put a lot of time and effort into it.

Not much time to try something new in life when i'm downloading a custom map and figuring out where bomb sites are. Yeee! Fun! 10 minutes left in download oh the joy!

This is a league why can't we just do the regular maps. I'm fine with say 2 custom maps but that's about it. Just drop the whole we're csr, we play custom maps, we're special thing for once. Just leave custom maps for the pub where they are meant to be played.

First off csr != custom maps.
I'm not saying we should change that but really the last custom map i played on csr was the playtest of cs_reloadedb4.

It isn't about the customs, it's about your closemindedness. Most of us like doing new things while you seem to enjoy banging your head against the same brick wall for hours and hours, day after day. Why stick around CSR when all you want to play is dust and aztec? Hence: go somewhere else, you != CSR.

| You must have not been on csr lately there is virtually no custom maps played. I do play custom maps on the pub on the odd occasion. But atleast for the league we should do regular maps.

Okay, first of all this IS NOT what this thread is even supposed to be about. This was started to discuss what maps are going to played for the tourney and now you two are going on about what CSR stands for.....
Secondly, I agree that custom maps should be played, but the general consensus is to have a mix and that is fine. It's supposed to be a fun tournament to play for everyone and if that means a mix of maps, so be it.
This whole thing is starting to get way out of hand. Please stop the bantering and only post if you have something valuable to add to the LEAGUE DISCUSSION.
Here's a link so you may continue your discussion...
What does CSR stand for???

I'm inclined to agree that its a good list - and basically the same as most people have suggested anyway.
The only thing is perhaps there are too many de_ maps maybe swap aztec for italy or office? or something else?

yeah i did wonder?! i dont play a lot of 3v3 so i find it hard to decide which maps will be good - cos some maps really depend on how many players there are.
I'll leave it to your good selves to decide - I'm only here for the comedy random cs'ing!

|
| This player character was a strange fellow. We change from dust to the citadel and he stays and downloads it. He's too lazy to change/think of a name, yet he'll download a map. Go figure.
This map has a lot of potential though it would be cool if we tried it with more than 3 people.

Nothing in this thread is final. It's for getting ideas. Final say will be with the admin team. The final map list will be posted with the final tournament outline and team sign-up sheet. This will be roughly the 1st of July - allowing a 2 week practise period for the teams involved.

On the topic of Custom maps and strategy:
That's where the real strategy comes in: you have to learn the map as quickly as possible and develop tactics on the fly--which is where good teamwork comes in. The team that better organizes themselves in an unfamiliar environment should do better. All of the standard maps have little to no new strategy development so there's very little growth for all involved. That's what I feel like this tourney should be about: fun and growth. This provides the CSR community with an opportunity to touch into a realm that many of the community members have not involved themselves before. For example, the Wumpas have never done any kind of tourney or anything before and this gives us an opportunity to experience that.
Just my two bits.

I agree too.
It's not a game when you're playing against a team that has completely memorized which corners to spam and where to camp and where to jump, etc. Sure that's a skill, and some people sure are good at it (druz, biggums, nittany, abysmal, etc), but it's NOT teamwork and doesn't rank very high on my list of "important qualities" in a player. All it boils down to is internalizing a certain way to play a given map, and my take on it is that it's a pretty darned useless quality to value in a tournament.
The only way to "level the playing field" and test two teams purely on their ability to work together, improvise, adapt to changing circumstances, and generally handle a situation that's entirely unknown to them is to play on a map that nobody has committed to absolute memory.
(That's also why I'm such a huge fan of deuceball, because it represents the very essence of what I'm trying to say here. It's a map where you can't ever memorize the layout on its own. Now the downside is that teamwork is still minimized due to lack of objectives and the lack of incentive to cooperate to win, but deuceball IS effective at removing all the variables EXCEPT how well one can move, shoot, and strategize on their own.)

what would be cool is to have a tourney with all new simple maps where you get the map 15 min before matchtime work up some quick strategy and then play. Probably way too much work to make it happen though

Like build a whole slew of basic maps specifically for a tourney...hmm that would be cool I could have done that if we'd made the decision a month or so back - making a simple map is easy, it's the details that drag it out for months

Yeah, that I think is the biggest problem facing custom maps. Well, two actually:
1) Building maps that are "well tuned" (even if they aren't the most beautiful or complex) is time consuming and requires a good amount of skill (like grounded, slight and deuce have).
2) Distributing custom maps is notoriously a pain in the arse. If there was a more "transparent" way to quickly get maps to players, it would make things a ton easier.

1) Ah but see that's the beauty of playing with an MR12 format. You play an equal number of times on both CT and T sides and so, even if there is an unbalance in the gameplay, both sides will experience it. I don't think it's particularly hard to make a reasonably fair map. It's practically impossible to build a perfectly tuned even if you end up mapping it for months.
2) Well if the maps were simple, and a prerequisite for the matches, then players would have no choice but to dl them. If they were layout maps only then they'd be pretty small anyway. Btw, any sv_download progress or been busy with league server shenanigans? I've uploaded the correct edition of cs_thunder so everything should be in order.

I've updated the configs again, and restarted the server. GO ahead and test the downloadurl thing whenever you get the chance. I'll talk to you again tomorrow evening.

AH YEAH!
upc and b4 are currently the only customs on the server but any of the ones that were recently cut can be reinstated (if you want to) since they're all already set up on the web server.
If you want to try this for yourself and already have upc and b4 just delete the upc bsp (it's only like 1 meg) and then join next time you see it on. Mine clocked in at 45 secs
The banner is a bit ropey I know but I just made it to actually see if it would work.

so does that mean whenever a custom map is being played anyone who joins will be able to download the files a lot faster now? And is that something that will happen automatically or do they have to download it in a special way?

Normally you'd see a window just like that one except the content hosting thing would say 'Boomtown.net' or something. Then you'd auto-download the necessary files from the game server which is slow. Now the auto-download delivers the files from the web server = pace.

Here Here, I could not agree with you more Porter! Let's not forget the number one reason it will never trully be fair and that is who has better equipment!

I think that equipment only gets you so far. I'm betting guys like Kaoz, Nittany, Biggums etc.... could own the average player with your basic gateway or dell system.
Besides Enialator you've got that kick ass laptop so what's your excuse. (sorry couldn't resist taking that cheapshot)
