Toolbar skins

How do I add a skin/background to a toolbar in Windows XP?? (by toolbar I mean the kind of toolbar that shows the content of a folder...not toolbar like in IE toolbar...)

i dont get it??
there is no image on any toolbar in that pic...just a regular docked "My Computer" toolbar on the side of the regular windows desktop background

The mac one is very nice looking. I was checking out the site you put up neo. Some cooler looking stuff then the one I currently use, which is just a silver color with cleaner looking bars. I did dl a new calculator skin too.

Here is my current desktop using:
Style XP
Rainlendar
Winamp5 + ipod skin
ObjectDock
I collected the icons collection and made myself some of them for the dock to look like mac style, also using a pulgin with some modification to show the current weather on my city.
If some is intersted in desktop modifications i can help you or give you the urls to dl this programs most of them are freeware or shareware

I think I've said this before, and I'll say it again Porter, I personally am becoming more and more impressed my mac, and the quality of software that they are releasing, however, I'm still not crazy about the idea that if my mouse breaks i am basically stuck buying one brand...their brand. You've said it yourself when we were talking about my C++ homework, it's portability now days over quality of programs. If mac could get CS working on it, and other companies to start supporting their platforms, i'd be all over it. Though, a Dell Mac almost seems like an oxymoron.

Okay Tenshi two things. For one, you must never have noticed the Logitech MX300 I have plugged into my Mac. Even *I* don't use those useless one button mice they ship their computers with! Look, if it works on a PC, 8 times out of 10 it works on the Mac, and it works better. I move my FireWire HD between my Mac and my PC for backups. I've swapped PCI ethernet cards back and forth. The same CD-ROM drives have lived in my Mac and PC, and I buy the same hard drives I would for a PC. The monitors I connect to my Mac use VGA and DVI connections, just like PCs do. You can even get Logitech keyboards that will work with Macs and PCs.
Second: You couldn't ask for a better platform for writing portable code than a Mac! Mac OS X ***IS*** FreeBSD! That means you've got all the same console commands you have on your laptop, but you also have a GUI that's really tough to beat. You can be working on your C code right next to browsing the web in Safari or Firebird, and have Photoshop and a DVD movie open in the background. Plus you've got iTunes, and Mail, all the other great tools. You've also got GREAT development tools like Xcode and SubEthaEdit to work on files, and you've got the entire command line environment of a unix box to fall back on! All the code I am writing for my Compilers and Interpreters class I am writing on my Mac. I compile and test the code right on my Mac, and then copy it over to the RedHat machine in the lab to submit it. It's tough to do any better than that when you're writing CLI code. GUI code is a different matter altogether of course, but if you write your apps in Java, they will be cross-platform too. Check out http://www.jgoodies.com for some great examples of applications that run on my Windows 2000 PC *AND* my Mac with OS X. Same exact program, Windows AND Mac. THAT is pretty damned convenient.
Lastly, don't confuse quality with visual appearance. You were trying to clean the look of your program's output, which doesn't have anything to do with the content of your program's output. That content is where the real "quality" lies. The lesson is that you shouldn't sacrifice the ability for anyone using any computer to run your code just so it looks good when you run it on YOUR computer. That's what Microsoft does.

Of course, if you meant "Counter-Strike" then I agree with you. Looks like we'll be out of luck for HL2 as well, considering it will be Direct3D *only*.

i'm not doubting Mac code, it is super amazing compared to windblows code now days. Nor do i think things like iTunes are anything but finally well written.
I never realized that mac had that much hardware open to it, I thought it was all specialized, though to be honest I've mainly been looking at their laptops.
When Porter fixes that WINE code so I can play Counter-Strike on it, and when I get about $2k, I'll probably buy a nice little 12" like jenn's. Until then, I'll just be chillin'.

I have tested mozzila, netscape , opera since first beta, firebird and even mosaic but IE is still better for me since i am webdeveloper , is faster and has most of our goal market
i can bet 90% of the people has IE 5+ running on winXP. Prolly Firebird is a good option for a occasional web surfer.
deskmodification is not about emulate others OSs, is about make what ever you want to your plain windows shell , I tell you I have see the future and the future is "skinable"

Ahh yes, the nice little 12" Powerbook. Gotta love it. I'm not sure what the specs are on the one that you are looking at or what you'd be using it for, but I can tell you, if I had it to do all over again the only thing I would have changed is waiting for the 15". Don't get me wrong, I love my book, but it is a little small. Otherwise, your lookin' in the right place Tenshi. I'm so proud  .

Oh, and I forgot RAM. Older Macs like my G3 use standard PC100, same as most of your machines probably use Tenshi. My G4 uses PC2700, otherwise know as DDR 266Mhz. The same exact RAM my PC uses. Even my iBook uses the same SODIMMs that most PC notebooks use. My USB controller? Works on both just fine, and it goes great with my iBook and a SNES emulator on road trips. Once upon a time, Macs used SCSI system busses, had NuBus pci-like card slots, and their own unique monitor plug, plus their own keyboard connection and "serial" port. All of that has changed, and just about anything you could ever put in a PC you can put in a Mac. Like I said, even PCI cards work just fine (providing you have Mac drivers for them). In fact, my G4 has 64 bit PCI-X slots-- BETTER than most PCs have.

Oh I so wish! There has been some work on a Mac port of WINE, but there are a lot more hurdles to overcome than going from Windows to a linux based PC. You end up actually EMULATING system calls instead of translating them, and that's a lot slower.
As for the size of Yuna's and my laptops, I very much preer the 12"-ers. They are exactly the same size as a spiral notebook, weight less that 5 pounds, and fit in my backpack right along with my textbooks. I wouldn't be happy with anything bigger or heavier. Besides, I don't need power or a huge screen-- that's what my dual display G4 at home is for. All I need is ultra portability.

The laptops are only as specialized as PC laptops are. The RAM is the same for both, and you can replace the hard drives for both. I can hook a standard VGA monitor up to my iBook, plus any USB or FireWire device you could think of. The advantages are that I have built in ethernet (which I guess is finally becoming standard on PC laptops too) and more importantly-- built in wireless. I don't NEED a stupid PCMCIA card sticking out of the side of my machine-- it's all tuck nicely away inside, and the antenna is lopped around my entire screen, which means reception is tons better than the dinky little stubs that jut out from PCMCIA wireless cards. Other than not being able to run CS, you really can't get much better. Apple is finally starting to get their prices down on par with PCs (and laptops too) and you can get a very well equipped Mac for almost exactly the same price as a comparable PC.
