Those are montagnards, and from what one of my teachers who helped train them before the US was officially involved in Viet Nam said, they'd make soup out of your intestines if they thought you were busting their chops.
We shamelessly used them up and then didn't do squat for them. Even the famous novel "Green Berets", made into a movie with John Wayne, details the myriad ways which they were used up and then abandoned.
