Stupid Question, Maybe?

Ok the FPS thing, I know we have gone over the LCD and how they perform poorly in that area.  I ws talking to Skip and his desk top tends to be around 60 FPS.  I use a lap top and that is mine also 60 FPS, if I use a monmitor with my lap top could I possible increase my FPS, is there a way to adjust this with just my lap top?  Listen a response must be in a caveman language, the majority of you guys are far more educated than myself in this area?  Hopefully I don not sound like an idiot asking this, is 60 FPS ok and should I not worry about it?  Thanks

60fps is fine. Human eyes can't perceive any higher than that anyway.

To give you a gauge, your television signal comes in at 24fps.

Don't quote me or even go on what I say but I think I'm in the ball park with this.

Unless your monitor's refresh rate is greater than 60, its not going to make a difference correct? I mean you video card could be capable of cranking out 10000fps second, but if you monitor can't refresh 10000 per second, then its pointless. Correct?

So I think in theory, yes you could hook up a monitor and get a higher fps assuming your video card can crank it out.

It depends on the monitor really, but there are ways to get like 250 fps.

Yes, if your monitor can't refresh fast enough then you don't get any fps improvement.

Chaning your refresh rate changes your sensitivity, just so you know.

Just fyi:

The reason the laptop is locked at 60 is because that's generally the way LCD's work (meaning I don't know of any that have adjustable refresh rates). There is no electron gun that can be retuned for faster frequencies. Like a couple people have mentioned, and external monitor might get around this, but whether it will make a perceivable difference is something you're going to have to test out for yourself.

this shows the monitor i want to get (and the one i already made my friend buy) has to be one of the nicest LCDs I have seen and is a good price. Porter, this monitor supports 60-75Hz so how can you say LCDs don't have an adjustable refresh rate

i tend to agree with Porter - most LCD's (mine included) don't usually operate at more than one refresh rate.  But as you say that one seems to do so - so there must be some?

I'm not sure exactly why but with an LCD @60Hz you don't get the same flicker that you can normally see out of the corner of your eye with a CRT @ 60Hz.

That is one of the main reasons CRT's can refresh above 60Hz - eye's can recognise rates up to nearly 60Hz and at 60Hz there can be some noticable flicker but at 70Hz and above you can't see a difference.

Some people will say you "notice" a difference when playing CS and other games and that may be true in some wierd way I don't know?!  But I don't know why the 60Hz flicker of CRT's dissapears on LCD's either?!

btw i forgot to mention it looks like a very nice monitor but of course a feature that everyone should look for when buying a monitor is:

Operating Altitude:
0 to 10,000 Feet

I have an LCD, and for the longest time it only had 60hz as am option for refresh rate. Then last week 75hz was showing up. I don't want to f' things up though. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Does that mean that warranty won't cover it if it craps out on a plane?

Sounds a little shady to me.

Better go for the ground shipping instead of the 2-day air.
