So my computer is plagues with a trojan for probably a month now, maybe longer... anyways i have tried everything to remove it, my dads tried everything too.

I was just wondering since i am going to lose all my cs maps, are the maps in the map packs still being played? I was thinking jsut dling them all. Mostly im pointing at the "daily" map ones.

thanks

Not at the moment.

Everything that is being played is available on the fast download. You can always download the vintage map packs for kicks though. Some gems in there.

This is a common problem you have Killer.

The reason the files keep coming back is becasue they put themselves into Windows' "System Restore Point". Windows keeps hidden copies of its vital files, and copies them back into the proper place if you accidentally delete them. if you put spyware in there, Windows is nice enough to restore that for you to. You need to disable System Restore, reboot and clean the spyware in Safe mode, reboot again, and turn it back on again afterwards.

I'll put money on that doing the trick.

In order to disable System Restore, right-click on My Computer either on your Desktop or in your Start Menu. Choose "Properties" from the context menu, and then when the Properties window comes up, click on the "System Restore" tab. Put a check in the box that's labeled "Turn Off System Restore". Click Okay to close the Properties window. You'll get a warning message about how turning off System Restore will delete all existing restore points, click Yes. Now it's important to download any updates for your virus scanner and anti-spyware programs, because you won't have network access when you reboot into Safe mode. After you've done that, reboot into Safe mode, and run ALL your spyware tools twice in a row each, plus a good (and UP TO DATE) virus scanner. Once you've done that, reboot again normally, and run all your tools once more, just to be sure you've got everything. It's also worth trying a different free online virus scanner such as Trend Micro's Housecall, in addition to the one you have installed on the machine. Using two separate antivirus programs helps make sure that you catch with one whatever the other might have missed.

You're half done now. In order to prevent any more spyware, you HAVE to stop using Internet Explorer. and Outlook or Outlook Express Switch to Firefox and Thunderbird. They work just as well, if not better, in every single case, but are about a hundred times safer. Also, install a different firewall, such as ZoneAlarm Free, since this is a lot more secure than the built-in firewall. It's also important that you be smart about what you download. Just becasue you know how to get RID of spyware doesn't mean it's a good idea to keep getting it. Learning "safe computing" is just as important. Stay away from questionable programs like Kazaa and AOL Instant Messenger that secretly install their own spyware along with the real program. (Yes, AOL Instant Messenger installs spyware! The "Wild Tangent" games server is classified quite clearly as spyware, and is detected by Spybot and AdAware.)

Lastly, Windows XP frequently suffers from a corruption of its networking stack that prevents ANY network connection from sending or receiving data, even though it will get an IP okay. In order to fix this, download a copy of WinsockXPFix and keep it in your My Documents folder just in case. Trust me, this is TONS easier than having to find another computer, download the file, put it on a floppy or CD-R, and take it to the broken machine. Microsoft should ship this little program as a part of Windows I've seen this problem occur so much!

That's really about it. Good luck!

I would also reccomend using HijackThis and BHO Demon to get rid of the files if you havent already tried it...if you need help with them just ask, as they can mess up your computer nicely.

Make sure to cut off your connection to te internet while you're running this stuff. It wouldn't hurt to do a manual search of the Add and Remove Programs list, and the folders in Program Files.

He disabled System Restore and that still didn't do it? Wow, that'd be a first for me.

The numbers are growing rapidly. It has over 25 million downloads in less than 100 days, so they must be doing something right.

I personally use Firefox. It's very useful, and I haven't had any spyware or even a pop-up since I started using it. It's great. The only downside is that they still need to work on completely implementing software plugins into their browser.

I'm curious, do you mean plugins like Quicktime or Flash, or do you mean ActiveX Controls? Cause if it's the former: what's missing? And if it's the latter, then: It's good Firefox is lacking! ActiveX controls are what got Internet Explorer into trouble to begin with. As soon as web developers stop relying on IE's operating system level hooks to write web apps that necessitate IE in the first place the entire internet will be a safer place.

Agreed - there are very, VERY few web sites that I run across that Firefox can't handle as well (if not better than) IE, and with the numbers that Firefox is putting up, it'll be hard for developers to play dumb for too long.

Another interesting tool i've found for virus removal is installing AVG (which i use in place of having to pay for Norton).  If AVG can't remove the virus for some reason, it will tell you the specific name of the virus.  Generally you can plug this name into google and get several executable "fix" programs for this virus.  Or even find information about how to get rid of the virus. The trojan your are explaining is one very similar to what my sister had, and I was able to get rid of it in this fasion, fyi.
