I've been needing some extra ram to get Source mapping off the ground, and seeing as it's my birthday I decided it was about time to get some. I have 512 already and was going to double up, but when I opened the case of the comp I couldn't find the manufacturer marked anywhere on the existing ram. Should I be looking to buy the exact same as I already have or can it be from a different company so long as its compatible?

As long as it's the same type it shouldn't matter where you get it from. Personally, I've used Crucial for the past 5 years. High quality, good prices, free 2 day air shipping most of the time. I've only used them in the US though...
A 512MB stick of PC3200 is $64 USD, for example.
Looks like the UK version is 44 pounds.

Same here, I just about always buy Crucial. Last thing you want is cheap RAM, especially during an intensive event like map compiling. Spend good money on good RAM, the ROI is quite high.

For RAM it's wise to always overbuy in speed if the prices are similar. What I mean is; PC3200 (400MHz) will downclock if you put it in a slower system with a 333MHz CPU, but if the time comes to upgrade your processor and the new CPU runs at a 400MHz clock speed that requires PC3200 to match, you'll have to go buy new RAM to replace the PC2700 (333MHz) that is no longer fast enough for your new processor. If you don't buy new RAM at that point, the processor have to underclock itself to 333MHz to match your RAM, at which point, why did you spend the money on it to begin with?
If you buy the faster RAM now, it'll work fine now, and in the future. Plus, the price for the Crucial PC3200 at that eBuyer site you linked are a pound cheaper than the Crucial PC2700 you suggested.
Win/win if you ask me.

make sure it's backwards compatible.
I just bought some pc 3200 and it said right on the package not backwards compatible. Of course that was the cheap stuff at compusa.

I've been using faster-clocked RAM in my machines back since the PC100 days (when most PCs were still PC66). Of course, I always use Crucial RAM, but it's always worked no matter what system I put it in.
