Hi guys - how are things?

I know I've not been around of late, I was off teaching/living at a fancy summer school and then went for a holiday to Italy.  Anyways - I'm living back at home now that I've graduated and we need to set up a network.

We have one main computer upstairs, another in my bedroom downstairs and a 3rd laptop which my parents use mostly on the other side of the house.

We want to set up a wireless network so we can all share the internet connection.  I suppose what we need to know is everything from what equipment we'll need to how far wireless networks stretch and installing etc etc.

My bro isn't stupid so he should be able to handle it but he is a paranoid android and worries enough to make things go wrong so help us out please

See you on teh serber.

Shouldn't be hard. You need a PCI wireless NIC for each tower (like this, just for example) that isn't going to be sitting right next to the next thing you need: a wireless router (another example). For any laptops that don't have wireless builtin, probably a PCMCIA wireless card along these lines).

(The Netgear bias is only because I know they make excellent products. I'd never buy anything but Netgear for the router, but you can probably get away with cheaper brands for the NICs.)

Some nasty things can happen if you don't secure your wireless AP (access point) correctly, so do be careful configuring it. Think for a second what would happen if somebody sitting in their car outside your house broke into your wireless internet connection, and hacked a government computer. Guess who's door the police would be knocking on. Definitely something to be careful with. In my honest opinion, I still think wireless can't be secured well enough yet (yet!), and that you should stick to hard-lined ethernet as much as possible. I recognize that there are situations where that isn't feasible or convenient though, but you should still try to be careful.

another alternative instead of getting something that goes directing into your motherboard is a simple USB wireless adaptor

It's been a mixed bag for me. I have had good luck with a linksys router but their PCMCAI cards are just bad. It never held on to the connection and it was poorly build. Poorly built as in I nearly ripped the end that sticks out clear off the card when the eject button on the laptop wasn't working.

YMMV

I had a D-Link PCI wireless card that was absolute sheeet. All of the Netgear routers I've bought have been incredible. Tenshi had some serious problems with a Linksys (IIRC) router though. To the point that they refused to replace it even though it wasn't working at all.

i went through TWO netgear routers before switching to linksys. i could easily say that netgear sucks as a result but meh.. technology isnt perfect.

The Netgear router that was recomended to me here has been a little shaky. Needs to be reset every few days. I am going to try a different brand when I set up the network for my new place.
