geez...I have another problem (a tribute to my collection )
When I use search, the computer freezes and the task manager shows 100% cpu usage...
At first I thought it was something called autocomplete that was the problem, so I switched it off, but that was not the case...what do I do (and what does autocomplete actually do )

IE will do this from time to time. I'm not sure that anyone really knows why, but it's almost like it gets stuck in a loop. I have seen similar things many times myself. Spyware is a good culprit, but it could also just be IE itself.

Maybe this is a symptom of what happens when you try to integrate a web browser into an operating system.

I've used it for a while, it's worked fine...but it screwed over my Kazaa before (I think), but you should have Kazaa Lite anyway, it's better.  Seeing this post reminded me that I haven't scanned for a while and it found a bunch of stuff....it's definately not going to 'make anything worse' though.

Auto-complete option is for when your typing in your address bar it will attempt to put in a site you have visited previously.  Have you tried any other browsers to see if the issue still happens?  Just curious

Spyware Detection site (no software installed required)
http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite

For software i suggest Adaware or spybot.

well...first of all - I don't have internet on my own pc, but I've had it connected to the internet once - a few months ago, but since then I've already scanned for viruses several times.
Secondly it's not a browserproblem - the problem occurs when I use the search from the start menu, or when I search folders...

Ahhh.... but it IS a browser problem. Windows uses 'internet explorer' (or at least a portion of the code base from internet explorer) to browse directories and do things like search for files and the like. Explorer (the program used to browse your drive) is linked with internet explorer. Weather browsing web pages, FTP sites, or remote file systems the code base is the same. And because explorer/internet explorer is also integrated into the OS (what is referred to as kernel space) malfunctions within explorer will manifest themselves in many different ways, including system lock ups and even the dreaded BSOD.

This is of course a very simple explanation, but my main point is that IE/explorer is very possbily the culprit simply because it's code is being called when a search is executed.

Nope.... other than DLing all of the newest files from M$ and making sure that you have the latest service packs and fixes there really isn't anything else you can do.
