I thought 8080 was the proxy listener port?

ANYWAY...... unless you have access to the firewall and can open up the proper ports then I think you're screwed.

Of course, if you have win2k server at home, then you could configure an RRAS listener on port 80 for a VPN connection, and then piggyback CS on the VPN through your home PC, but I think this would be overkill, and your ping would SUCK.

Of course VPN will only work if your school's firewall is configured to pass PPTP or L2TP packets..... and that is a big IF.

So that means you can't use: AIM, Media Player, RealPlayer, MSN Messenger, HTTPS, FTP, SSH, outside pop3 or imap or smtp connections, Counter-Strike or ANY other game??? Thats a little overkill if you ask me.

What do people think about using the -port 80 command in the CS shortcut? You think that would work Slight?

I thought that aim was one of those weasel like programs that'll seek out any active port when you close out its default.

Anyway as for CS on port 80 it really depends on how the schools firewall is setup.  If they actively block all ports for UDP traffic you would be screwed.  If UDP is open on 80 and CS allows you to use this port it should work I would suppose.  Good luck.  If luck does not work beg the sys admin for a port.

I guess it is possible, but you would have to have a server that is also configured to listen on that port, and I don't know of many CS servers that use port 80. Also, if the admin at his school is smart, then port 80 will be open for TCP connections only, not UDP, which would kill that idea anyway.

Are you sure that only port 80 and 8080 are open? 8080 is usually for a web proxy listener, and of course 80 is HTTP, but I would think that 443 should be open for SSL, and 20 and 21 for FTP, at the very least.

*cough* Portscan?

I still think VPN is the only way to do it. Example:

I set my router to listen for incoming connections on port 80 and to forward those packets to my RRAS server on the default PPTP port. RRAS establishes the connection. My RRAS server has a share on it with half-life installed.  You mount the share as a drive. You launch half-life (through the VPN) from the mounted drive, you connect to a server. You connection is leaving my RRAS server on it normal port (27015) and passing through my router/firewall. All is right with the world.

The problem with this solution is that it requires a sick amount of bandwidth, and wold probably bog down like a red neck driving a K-car during mud season. But it is the only way I can think of to make it work.

I believe you can run some sort of internet tunneling software to direct your traffic over specific ports.  I haven't really reseached this too much but it is possible. Most of the time you would have to pay a fee to a company so your bandwidth wouldn't be limited. I'll do some looking around to see if I can find some companys offering this service but no guarentees   Just do a search on google you'll probably find something on it.

I would offer to set up a VPN that you could connect to, but those cheep bastards over at Adelphia only give me 16K upload, and 16k upload does not a VPN make. I thought some more about this problem over the weekend, and I am not convinced that a VPN would work correctly either. If you run CS from a share on my VPN server, it may be that since it is still run from memory on your machine that it will be your machine attempting to connect to the game server, and that the signal will not leave the VPN server as we need it to.

OK, I checked with a buddy of mine, and he said doing this through a VPN should be possible. He said to establish the VPN connection, and then to set your Default gateway as the VPN server. This will ensure that the packets leaving your machine are routed through the VPN server, and not through your LAN. Once you have done this, you should be able to connect to the game server as you normally would.

The bandwidth requirements would not be as bad as I thought, because only Half-life traffic would be routed (there is no need to load the app off of the game server as I previously thought). The ping would still suck pretty bad; You have to figure that the connection will be passing through another router and VPN server, and that will increase lag a bit.

If you want to give it a try I can set up my router and VPN for this (I think I have enough bandwidth for this method) and we can give it a shot. No promises.

We can try it through the VPN. It might take a little work, but I think we can get it going. Only problem is, I can't exactly leave my server on 24/7, or let you eat up my bandwidth all the time. We can see if it works, and then maybe you can talk someone into setting something permenant up for you. Its up to you. If we can get it working then at least you know you have an option.

First off, what OS are you using? Win2k or XP is preferable, because I don't think 98 or Me *shudders* can do VPN. What you're basically going to do is make a connection to my box, and then tell your computer to use that connection when it connects to the internet. The connection to my box will be going through one of the open ports on your schools firewall, therefore bypassing it and allowing you to connect to any internet resource.
