Connection Errors

I can't connect to the steam network, even though everyone else can. The only router I'm going through is the one at Adelphia. I don't mess with my ports. I don't even know how to modify them.
Did you read that all Steam programs, once you use them over the internet once, you must always have an internet connection to play? That means HL2 can be played offline, but once you play it multi online, you will need an internet connection to play it. WTF.
I'm just sick and tired of the mess. I'm going to play a game that works. Call me when they burn Steam.
