Load Failed Problems

I spent some time yesterday poking around the user forums at steampowered.com trying to find information about a problem a lot of our regulars have been complaining about here on CSR. The problem is players are experiencing very frequent "load failed" errors between maps, and we are definitely NOT the only server affected by this. The general consensus in the bsteampwoered oards is that it was the latest Steam update that initiated this problem, though there is still a lot of debate about it. I am inclined to agree with that stance though.

Right now, there are only two viable workarounds that I've encountered, which may or may not help much for you. The first is to decrease your cl_timeout cvar to a very small number-- about 35 (seconds). The reasoning is that this will make the "load failed" error appear more quickly and allow you to use the retry command faster.

The second solution is to bind a key to the retry command itself, and press it before the map ends. This will cause you start a new connection to the server right before the map switches, and should help you avoid the "load failed" problem.

I admit that neither of these is ideal, and I would certainly welcome any better workarounds or solutions any one cares to offer. The best thing you all can do right now to get this very annoying bug fixed is post in the steampowered forums, and even email the support team. If this problem really was caused by the last Steam update, then it's been around almost two weeks, and Valve hasn't even admitted the problem yet. I think that's reason enough to let them know how big an issue this is.

I've actually been able to drop my console down during the load, so that it shows me the "progress bar" similar to what you see the first time you connect, then I can tell right when I get the load failed.

An update for all Steam games has just been released. As always, Steam will update your games automatically -- you don't need to take any special action.

Dedicated server admins can get the update normally via the HLDS update tool, or the dedicated server update can be downloaded directly from this page.

Here's a complete list of the changes:

ALL GAMES:
Fixed regression that was causing the 'load failed' crash to happen on level change

Well that's good news. I expect ReconGamer will be emailing me today or tonight notifying me they've applied the update.
