RG updated their MySQL server (which I suspect was their attempt to fix the "too many connections" errors we were getting a couple weeks ago) and in the process brought the whole database server to it's knees.
The problem was two-fold, from what I've been able to gather. The first part is that the upgrade caused some conflicts in the format of the database files. The second part is that the hard disk hosting the actual database files ran out of room. Both seem to be fixed now, but I haven't heard anything official from RG yet (nor do I really expect to) so there may be updates.
The forums are open again.

Rightyho.....
Recongamer seem to be not exactly very efficient at keeping these servers/services running with a good uptime to be honest....

It seems to me that they have a hard time doing anything right. Its really annoying seeing the forums go down every other day or week or how often it is.

Well, considering just about everything that can go wrong already has, maybe we're off the hook for a while. I'm staying ahead of any serious problems with regular backups. We're pretty durable, even if RG is not. I can't see everything being bad enough to warrant trying to find a new provider yet though.

Okay, so get this. I got an email back from RG about Monday's database outage: it was caused by another client. RG stacks EVERYONE'S databases onto one machine-- we share MySQL with about 60 other RG accounts. It was one of them that used up all the disk space. Nice to know that we could take out everyone else's site if we wanted to huh? All we have to do is starting filling OUR database with junk, and EVERYBODY will run out of room. That's good planning. 
I have not yet asked if there were any repercussions for the other client.
