Linux - Firebird help

ok slighty, this is your baby, so I'm blaming you. I think I know the solution, I just don't know the commands I need to fix it.
when I do the ./firebird deally it says:
"error while loading shared libraries: libgtk-1.2.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"
I assume then that I need a 'shortcut' jobber to point to my libgtk (which I believe I have from GAIM). Anyway, how do I update and search my computer to find that lib file? I know there is away, but I don't remember how...
ok, and one more thing, sometimes, when i start KDE, it just loads a grey screen with an X for a cursor...what is it doing, and how do I get around that?

That grey screen with the x is just the default X screen that loads before KDE kicks in. There is no way around it, in fact, it is perfectly normal. It might stay there a bit longer on your system because KDE will take a second or 2 to load, but that is no big deal.
As for the libgtk, if you do have it installed then it probably is just a matter of setting up the soft link.
I did some checking on the Firebird site, and searched their forums a bit. It seems that someone has taken the time to port firebird to BSD, This is the link for that build. This one might help take care of that problem, because it has been altered to work on BSD specifically.

so i that little FreeBSD link is just a package that starts a download which for some reason took forever and a half, only to tell me I'm missing some other lib file or something, when I actually get some time, I'll try to compile again, and let you know.
In the mean time, I have no glow, and it bothers me...

It's never glowed for me-- it's kind of a IE only thing I think. Safari doesn't do it.

Just like IE for some reason can't display the little thingy.....the little picture for the web site thingy... OMG it doesn't have a name...
THAT thing... see how Firebird shows a little Icon next to the web site address, but IE doesn't?

It's called a favicon, and Win-IE5+ will do it-- you just need to design a site that has the right html (and files) in place.  Safari supports them too.

That's IE 5.5 on the right side, and it will only do it with a very select number of sites (maybe 5% of the time). Firebird seems to do it with EVERY site that has a favicon.

Yeah, once again IE has a "different" way of requesting and recognizing favicons. That might be part of it.

Not a bad idea. Somebody email me a 16x16 pixel 256 color icon file and I'll add the HTML to the site to make it work. I suggest looking up a tutorial online-- it needs to be a ICO file with an optional 32x32 icon in the same icon file as well.

Okay, so I tried to recompile, and the error I get is as follows:

Have you checked the Ports or Packages Collections Tenshi? Why can't you just build the binary (and all the dependencies) from there? or better yet-- try pkg_add. Copy this command to a command line and run it. Make sure you're root before you do it:
| pkg_add ftp://ftp.FreeBSD.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/i386/packages-stable/All/mozilla-firebird-0.6.1_1.tgz |

(There's no line break in there, btw.) Also, investigate the Ports Collection online-- 99 time out of 100, the software you need (and all the software the software needs) can be installed with a single command. If you're using FreeBSD, this is your best friend. It's also where I found the package in the command I gave you above. It's in your best interest to read up on it buddy-- it'll save you a LOAD of time and hassle.

I installed Firebird on my STC machine from here with that command in about 3 minutes Tenshi. I can't test it though because I can route x-windows all the way to me here at Knox.

Sorry for clarity, that IS what I typed at the prompt slight, what I'm displaying my code tags there is the output once I put that in. Just so you know though, I just tried to add this package:

And I got the same result. My hope was that maybe this package would fix my problem, that I was having with the install that you tried to point me too.
So yeah...
basically my computer is stupid and can't perform some of the most basic tasks that you'd THINK any other computer can run...you see why i was having problems with it in WINDOWS!! I can't even fix it in UNIX!! Supposedly one of the most standardized computer operating systems EVER!

VERY unlikely-- it's about as "core" to FreeBSD as any software gets. The syntax for the version of pkg_add that ships with FBSD5+ might be different though. Read up on it-- I bet you can get it to work Tenshi. Try man pkg_add for some more info on your version as well.

Is there some kind "bzip2" zip software I can install or something?? Could this be that my "Arc software" isn't up to date or something?

Well the file you're getting is a gzipped tar file-- a pretty standard unix archive type. That's where the ".tgz" comes from. The problem is that I think FBSD 5 uses a different archive format for it's packages-- bzip (version 2). I guess the next thing to try is to check the ports collection (as opposed to the "package" we're currently discussing), and build it from source.

Try adding the -r option to pkg_add and see if that helps... I think by default pkg_add may be looking for a bzip2 type package. The -r option will use the remote fetch feature, and part of that is to determine the package type (I think) and then install. From the pkg_add man pages:
-r Use the remote fetching feature. This will determine the appropriate objformat and release and then fetch and install the package.
So maybe while it is checking the objformat it will 'see' that it is a .tgz package and will install from there.
The other thing to try is to DL the package, and then try unzipping it:
gunzip mozilla-firebird00.6.1_1.tgz
and then re-zip it using bzip2:
bzip2 mozilla-firebird00.6.1_1.tar
and then try to install the package:
pkg_add mozilla-firebird00.6.1_1.tar.bz2
although I don't know if this 'work around' will do any good.

Tenshi, the Ports Collection is different from the Packages Collection. Ports are source code archives that will be automatically downloaded and compiled into a usable binary for you. Packages are pre-built binaries that are just downloaded and installed. Both systems track dependencies, which means if the port or package you're trying to install relies on some other port or package, that other package will automatically be downloaded and installed first.
I'm saying try the Ports method. Check your /usr/ports/net and /usr/ports/www directories for a "firebird" or "mozilla" reference. Then cd into that directory and type make as root.

I don't know what's going on with the whole bzip issue though. That's just weird. I have tons of experience with FreeBSD 4.x though, and not so much with 5.x. Your pkg_add is quite plainly expecting a bzip2 file to work with after the download finishes, but every FBSD package I've ever seen has been tgz. You might want to browse around the FreeBSD FTP archives to see if you can find a Packages Collection designed for 5.x. Try ftp://ftp.freebsd.org

That sub-directory has different folders for each version of FreeBSD. I don't remember if you have 5.0 or 5.1, and I don't remember if you have the "release" or "current" branch. Just poke around till you find bzip2 files (they might end with ".tbz"), and then look for firebird in net or www. Then use THAT URL with pkg_add.
You know what, just try this link and tell us if it works:

yay! it fetched it and installed it, but I dunno where it put it, or more importantly how I can figure out how to tell my desktop icon where to go to intialize the program. ya know, i sat there and nearly found that url all myself, then i come back here to ask if I have 5.1 or 5.0 myself (i think 5.1), and i realized there was a 3rd page.

to find it, you have two choices: whereis and locate. whereis searches your current $PATH environment variable for any binary matching the string you pass to it.
(Your $PATH environment variable is a set of file directories that your shell should look for binaries in. It's what lets you type "man man" without having the man program in your current directory. You can add new directories to your path my editing your shell initialization script. For csh and tcsh, that would be [/b]~/.cshrc[/b] The HandBook has more information on editing your PATH setting.)
(("dot-files" by the way, like ".cshrc" are unix's way of hiding files. the ls command by default will not show anything that starts with a dot. You have to use ls -A to see them.))
So back on track: the whereis command might not work because the pkg_add might have created a new directory for the firebird binary that isn't part of your PATH yet. That's where the second solution will help. locate will find ANYTHING that has your search term in it's path. But locate only updates IT'S index when you explicitly tell it to, so after adding new software, you have to run the locate.updatedb script again (as root) to re-scan your hard drive. Then you can use locate firebird to see where the binary ended up. You'll get lots of hits on that, because the /usr/ports directory has firebird references in it too, so you might have to poke around a bit till you find it.
Then you can launch it in KDE from a Konsole, but there is probably a way to add it to your Panel (the taskbar across the bottom). I'm not familiar enough with KDE to walk you through THAT though.

It seems to me that there are a couple solutions to try in that thread in addition to the original bug.
I'm assuming you can't open links from other programs into Firebird, right? (You haven't explained if you are experiencing this bug or just stumbled across it.)

well, what's happening is that I open Firebird, and it wants me to "select a profile", even if I click on "don't ask at startup" it still asks me, and then after trying a profile that I've used once before it gives me an error, stating "Mozilla Firebird cannot use the profile "Default User" because it is in use. Please choose another profile or create a new one."
So basically I have to keep creating new profiles to do anything. I assume, that this is some sort of conflict with which users are active. And it looks like their fix there on clicking links and not being able to open the same "browser" for "multiple users". At least, that's my hope.

Your problem sounds a little like file permissions. Like the profile being made can't be written to disk because Firebird doesn't have the right access permissions to do so. That would explain why every time you started Firebird, it would have to ask you to create a new one.
Have you check mozilla's bug lists/forums?
