Alk's Website Idea

Alk, so you know, our current webpage is a mere 1.3MB, so it isn't much of a space concern.  Geocities allocates me 15MB, and I don't think I've come even close to that.  I will mention again though that I've never used MySQL, perl, or php so I don't know how much more stuff like that will take should I decide to try and use that.  What I'd like to do is start with a "remake" of the current homepage, get things like ftp-ing into the website down and stuff like that etc, etc.  Ah, so many questions about HTML, i don't even know where to begin...

The best way to learn html is to just rip off other people's code. by looking at the code of various mentally vacant homepages that have lots of frills, you can learn some neat stuff. To start off, I'd suggest looking at my homepage, which I made for no other purpose than learning html (and yes, it is ugly as all hell)

As for SQL, Perl and stuff, I fail to see what use that could provide for a clan page unless you were planning on making it over-the-top fancy.

Though PHP and SQL is probably more than you need, I would at least recommend getting familiar with using standards based HTML at least. The W3C is the group that controls what HTML actually is, and it's a good idea to write HTML that conforms to their specs. Visit www.w3.org for more.

Of course, that's only half the deal. Web pages are visual media, and as such if it's important to you for your users to be able to use your site efficiently, you should research HCI ("Human Computer Interaction"). There are numerous sites that will help you create web pages and sites that used well documented principles to aid your users, such as www.useit.com and www.webpagesthatsuck.com/. I just can't stress how important this is, and it's a good idea to get this drilled into you from the beginning. People may scoff at this as overkill, but Tenshi will understand when I say this is about writing good "software". Software that Mr. Reber would be proud of.

we have to keep in mind that our webpage should "market" our clan.  ideally we want to have person we know saying "i want to be a part of clan guardian".  Not that I think that will happen, but you get the idea i think... it's supposed to kind of represent us, and show people what we are made of.  The more quality it is, the better quality/respectable our clan looks.  Course, then again, we did let deuce in    And on top of that...X started it.

People do indeed have typical "usage" patterns for web pages. Places their eyes always go, and places their eyes never go. The develop methods for scanning pages for what they are looking for, without ever actually reading what you put on the page. It's well worth it to take advantage of these things if you plan on your site being at all useful. You should also google website "joy of use" for some more lessons in why this is important. Not surprisingly, the first listing is from useit.com.

But you don't have to listen to me-- it's not like I've been working towards a degree in this stuff or anything.

Keep in mind this doesn't conflict with, "keeping it simple and sharp," at all, but WILL help guarantee people stay at your site long enough to notice all your spiffy frills.

I didnt mean to poo poo on anyone's ideas there, I am just saying that there generally isnt exactly a large amount of content on a clan page.
An hour long multimedia epic on the coolness of the clan isn't in the books, as far as I know anyway, so why look into it too deeply into the problem? Just trying to play a bit of a devil's advocate here.

Otherwise, I would like to say that I am quite pleased that there has been a bit more activity on the clan Guardian front lately. Alk mentioned something in game yesterday about wanting to organizing a scrim, which is very cool.

Rightyho, glad to see my offer has been accepted provisionally.

I will go ahead and set up the subdomain and get things going with ftp accounts. Every Guardian member can have an email address at my site too free of charge, supposing I can sort it out with no problems.

By the way, here are the details of my account:
Web Space - 750 MB
High-availability Bandwidth - 19 GB
MySQL Databases - 3
Domain Pointers - 5
Sub Domains - 10
FTP Accounts - 11 (in total)

I was also thinking, that I could register a Guardian Clan domain name of some sort and point it directly to the subdomain. [www.guardianclan.com or www.clanguardian.com are both available]

One last thing, whoever is in charge of the current website (Tenshi?) should give me their msn contact details in a PM so I can add you in there.

That's looking quite sharp. Gj Deuce. One thing I would like to point out is that on the title bar, the angel logo's bottom looks a little rough like you erased part of it with a small brush and your mouse was jiggling. I like the colors though.

just try and keep it standard, kinda like porter said.  I'd prefer us not using a pagebuilder as opposed to us hand coding it...

As I mentioned in another post, GoLive is the best there is when it comes to letting you stick to the standards. It's still up to you to do it of course. My only advice-- there should never be any <font> tags in your code. If you see any, you're doing something "less-right".

Learn CSS. It's amazingly powerful, very elegant, makes your pages smaller (and therefore load faster) and VERY flexible. It is SOOOOOOOOOOOO worth your time to understand and use style sheets. Just for example, I can change one line in a single file on this site, and have every heading on every page of this site change with it. No messing with trying to change the same thing in every file and always fighting to keep them all the same.
