just finished playing joust_v2 in a 5v5 game..lots of fun and lots of comments (ranging from "this is cool!" to "how the crap do i drive this thing" to "this is gay"). over all it seemed like people were having fun trying new tactical ideas

i'd like any suggestions for fy_joust from anyone who has played it. as soon as the mapping competition is over, and before i start my es map idea, i'm gonna complete fy_joust.

• here are some suggestions and ideas so far:

• put sides on the carts (though could add a positive or a negitive impact. it would be possible to squish people with the carts if aimed right, and can also knock people off the carts. i think keeping them off might be the better solution)

• have the barricades made shorter for easier nade throwing access.

• make the mini barricade walls ontop of the tower breakable (thus making the tower not a perfect area to hide)

• add water to the bottom of the pit, but make some sorta of continous damage (thus if a person falls off a cart, he or she is not dead yet, but will suffer damage over time that will kill...giving enough time to fight back?) maybe add ladders back up to the starting point.

• make nice big instructions on how to drive the carts 

• more easter eggs! (the floor of the tower being breakable is not only a nice easter egg, but is a great tactical idea. with porter and i being really the only ones who knew about it, we took big advantage of destroying it while people were on it, destroying it to make it harder to climb, ect...)

• moving the carts at the beginning farther apart, for easier driving access

any more suggestions would be great.

going with that water idea...i think there should be 5 "stations" that u could get back on.  But dont have ladders cause they are too easy  to kill people like that.  I think that there should be elevators or something that automatically move u up so that u can shoot (more accurately than goin up a ladder) at someone.  I think there should be 5 stations.  One in the middle and 1 on each of the 4 corners....each station above would have a litte ramp were a couple of "carts" will be there.  maybe the middle station can be a ladder straight to the tower in the middle??  That would be cool.  Those are my suggestions..

well this is what i was thinking. i want people going on the carts. one problem we had a little while ago was having low gravity on, and it didnt work on the map, cause people could jump down and shoot from the ground, which i dont want to happen. people are suppose to be on the carts fighting.

i can see though added something in each corner.

and if there were ladders, it would make people more vulnerable. which would be good, cause maybe then they wouldnt be so willing to fall off so easily.

if there were 4 stations in the corner..how would the idea of having an AAA gun in each corner? as long as i can make it so it doesnt kill someone in 1 hit (like it does in as_forest last time i checked), i think that would be pretty cool.

You've already gotten most my suggestions, but here's what I can think of for the record:

  • Rails on the carts. (PLEASE try to find a way so they bump off each other instead of sliding through each other!)
  • BIG instructions on how to use the carts.
  • Better defined "front" to the carts.
  • I like the damaging water idea. Less frustrating than dying right away, but still a strong deterrent to not fall off to begin with.
  • Screaming sound from vertigo for when people fall.
  • Custom sounds for the carts themselves. They sound like go-karts right now with squealing tires and engines, but they fly and have no engines or tires, which is weird. Maybe UFO-type-ish sounds?
  • I like the crumbling tower barricades idea too.
  • I like the shorter  team barricades idea.
  • Maybe add some random walls in the open areas for cover? Just make sure the carts bounce off them instead of sliding under and sweeping you off!
  • I like the idea of spreading the carts out more so they are more easily accessible too.
  • Myabe add some textures to the walls to make it look more like it's medieval? Like some of those big wall banners you see in castles? Just to follow with the "joust" theme.
  • A little more lighting in places.


As I've already told Deuce, this is the first FY map I've ever liked. I die laughing every time I play it. Great work Deuce!

you know how in as_forest, there are AAA guns near one of the rescue points? what is the entity(or entities) needed to create one of those guns?

changes so far added:

  • a platform under the carts at the spawns..so you cant fall off right away unless you really are a newb (this might lead to so camping, but will cut down on the suicides..i think just the last time we played that map, there were more suicides in 1 game then about a month of playing csr  )
  • water on the bottom of the map, with a trigger hurt entitiy, doing maybe 10 dmg a sec? i have to count and see how much it really does
  • lowered barricade walls
  • lowered room walls, took away ceiling, adding a cool skyline
