SPYWARE *horrific scream*

ok so.... spyware..... everyone has it... everyone loves it.... umm yea so i really really really need some help the spyware on my computer has gotten out of control.. i recently formated and re-loaded windows like 4 weeks ago and already the spyware is on full head... i have spyware taking over spyware and its sooo annoying.. the thing thats really being dumb is i have one where your homepage is always defaulted to some stupid search engine, and its really dumb and i always get all these stupid links in my favorites and its great.. so anywayz my question is whats some good stuff that will get rid of this crap? ad-aware.. yea.. its cool but it just basically tells u what u have and when u get rid of it , it always comes back.. i tried this thing called bazoooka something and it got specific and told me the names of the files that were infected and how to go into the regisrtry and delete them.. im still working on that and then i got this thing called xoftspy but it wants 40 dollars to delete the spyware.. so if anyone has any ideas how to get rid of this stupid spyware or the serial number to xoftspy... itd be greatly appreciated

Look, if you own a PC and choose to use Windows, you'd better damned well have anti-virus software. True, it'll cost you a yearly subscription for updates, but that's the price you pay for picking a Microsoft product. It's part of the cost of ownership, andTHERE IS NO EXCUSE not to have any! You're the ones ruining the internet for the rest of us, so fulfill your social obligation and get some protection! Just get Norton Anti-Virus 2004, install it, update it, and run it. Run it weekly, and run it from Safe Mode (that's the only way to get things out of memory so they can be properly deleted). Norton AV 2004 detects Adware very well too, and it's almost worth it just for that. You are just gonna have to expect that it costs that much more to have a Windows machine. Get used to it.

my god. you make it sound like every windows user has no idea what to do online.
guess what..an educated PC user knows how to avoid spyware..its not that hard to do..

well good news.... i got rid of it... quite a lot of it too...i dont consider myself an educated pc user though. i just consider myself lucky that i didnt delete anything important in the registry files while i was just deleting mad crap in there for an hour.. HOWEVER when i open IE it opens to a yahoo insted of those search engines soo yea im happy.

Thanks to all the people who made it possible for me to have everything for free. And kazza lite for letting me download all the stuff i couldn't find on cd.

Astoundingly, biggums does have a point: the only price worth paying for ANY Microsoft product is nothing.
But that's off the point. My point is, you're using an OS that has tons of security holes in it. Even THAT isn't the big deal though-- Macs have tons of security holes too. No, the problem with Windows is that people are looking for and using those holes, whether you yourself are a smart user or not!
That's why I'd pretty much bet that anyone using Internet Explorer, no matter how smart or careful they are, probably has something spyware-like on their computer. It's just not an issue of how smart YOU are, it's an issue of how smart YOUR SOFTWARE is, and MS stuff isn't exactly Ph.D. material. If you use Windows, your own computer is sabotaging your attempts to exercise "safe computing!"
All I'm saying is that you pretty much waive your right to protect yourself, your computer and its data as soon as you put the XP install disc in the CD tray. I wouldn't be surprised if it was in the EULA!

wow. its a good thing i have NOTHING IMPORTANT at all on my computer.
i use IE, i have the latest version of nortons, and i use ad aware frequently. i also know how to get rid of spyware on programs like kazaa. i also spent $700 on this computer..and thats it so far. i imagine you've spent much more then i have porter.
but hey..i could always switch to a different OS..so i could you know..not be able to play most of my computer games. that would be worth it.

There's no need to get testy. I already said you should use whatever works best, didn't I? If you've got not choice but to use Windows, then by all means use Windows. I just wouldn't presume to consider myself safe just because I was a smart user. That's just setting yourself up for further misfortune.

I doubt it. My G4 and PC were both gifts, as were all 3 CRT monitors on my desk, and the Boston Acoustic speaker set I have. I haven't bought anything computer related for good long time now.

Complacency is very dangerous.
Nothing Important? Sure.... if that's true than give me your IP address and let me blow your system up. It doesn't have to be credit cards or corporate documents to be important. I have seen spyware hose a system so bad that the only thing to do was format and reinstall. Better make sure you do a back up as often as you can.
And Deuce, do what I do.... dual boot. I only use Windbloze for games that don't run on Linux, and I never have to worry about spyware or viruses, because I run as a non-priv user and I close every port except the ones I need to connect to whatever game I'm playing. That is the only use Windbloze has for me. Eveything else, IM, web, e-mail, work, mapping, modeling, design.... the whole 9 yards is done on Linux.

a good amount of spyware gets installed because people are stupid and click yes to popups and things like that... also a lot of spyware is simply data miners that log sites you visit and things like that... now I am not saying thats good... i hate spyware with a passion... but not all of it is trying to get your PERSONAL information.

i should be the posterchild for spyware.. i had my identity taken.. sorta kinda someone else currently is claiming my social security number as their own.. and ive yet to do anything about it cuz im too lazy, but im guessing its from all that fun stuff, i used to give out my social security number so i could win a stuffed animal or something online (ya im one of those people)| I have seen spyware hose a system so bad that the only thing to do was format and reinstall. |

that happened to me just 4 weeeks ago and i had to format.. it wouldnt even let me start up the machine.. ive had almost every kinda spyware on my computer.. and its fun.. sometimes.. if ur into that kinda stuff.....

I ment directly. Yes i bought a computer. But after i bought it i used my friends cracked version of xp pro and installed that so i dont' feel that i really supported them all that much. Along with all the programs that i've gotten for "free" i consider it as just that. I haven't paid them anything.

whats firebird? i also thought about using a router? do u think that would work? my friend uses one and he says he rearly gets all the crap, but i dunno cuz ud think it was hit the router before it would go to your computer but i dont know

I don't think it's called firebird anymore.... I think the new version is called Firefox.
It's cool....no pop-ups, better security, tabbed browsing, all kinds of goodies.

Yeah i actually have it because i got some wierd ass spyware that would make every page have an error after 2 or 3 pages so i got it. Then nittany was like get ad-aware and run it, i did and it fixed, but i have it as backup.

Firebird is version 0.7, firefox is version 0.8..... It is Beta....but I have used firebird/firefox at home and at work for the better part of 8 months and I have never had a probelm.....it's never quit/died/frozen up....nothing. I'll take an open source Beta over closed source final releases every day of the week and twice on sundays.

hey dev, ive downlaoded that one before, i tried running it again and it couldnt find anything, then i ran ad-aware and it found stuff, so i dunno.. i thought all my spyware was gone but it just keeps coming back and im not even doing anything.. i'll have it all cleaned up then go to work for 8 hours and it will all be back.. but today i ran ad-aware before my comp could even fully boot and its been keeping me spyware free all day so far.. but i dunno maybe my purpose in life is to the international spyware host or something.. and i did download the mozilla but its scares me cuz it reminds me too much of netscape and reminds me of 3rd grade..

It's theme-able.... you can make it look like whatever you want... Mozilla looks more netscape-ish than Firefox does.... It's up to you, but I would give it a try and see if it helps keep the spyware away....

I see Slight, thanks for clearing that up.
Only problem I have is getting mozilla to work with windows media extentions. If I want to see a movie with that extention I have to put in the address myself into wmp. I'm sure there is some way
to avoid this, but IDK.

It should work out of the box.... but if it doesn't I believe that it is possible to manually associate the .wma extension with windows media player. Look in options and there should be a list of MIME types and the action associated with them.

yeah well i have the google toolbar and i have 0 popups.
Also when you run ad-adware when it finishes you have to click all the boxes and hit delete you know. It doesn't automatically delete them. Caus i don't see any other reason that you have tons of popups unless you are watching Mad pron which is possible.

its not so much as popups that i have, i got the YAHOO toolbar and it keeps it all clear, lol and yea i do delete when ad-aware is done but say i run ad-aware once, delete everything, then run it again, some of the same things that i deleted the first time still show up, so what i started doing, is running adaware to find out what i had, then go into the registry and delete those files specifically from there, and that way seemed to work the best, it kept me spyware free for up to 8 hours.. so

LoL. I rember the first time i used it, it worked perfectly then the next time i forgot to delete the stuff and it kept staying it took me like 3 hours to figure out what i was doing wrong. It's always so simple.

Same here 
I started using Firebird a while ago when slighty recomended it, and I've been using it since. (As someone pointed out, its Firefox now...almost the same thing though). But if you're not already using it, you should start.
I used to have the problem with Windows Media, but everything seems to work fine since I got the newest Firefox].
