Splitting cable line

I want to get a splitter for the cable line I use for my modem so I can watch TV on my computer. By splitting it, how will it noticeably affect the performance of my cable modem? I'm assuming I can pick something up at a place like Radio Shack to do the job?

I have it set up like that, and it distorts the line equally. The TV reception in my room is mediocre, and my internet connection is mediocre as well. Make sure you check the Hz (I think thats what splitters are measured in...not sure), the higher the better.

You can do it, but it's not a good idea. It would weaken and distort the signal and there would be more data lost, which means more retransmissions, which would result in lower bandwidth and a less stable ping. The less interface contacts you have from when the cable comes into the house, the better.

I have 2 tv's running off my cable as well as the pc and don't have any real trouble.
Roadrunner installed an Antronix CMCDT 2104T-HEP tap when I got the cable service.
The PC is fed from that tap before the cable hits the splitter for my TV's. I do notice some loss of picture quality on the TV's and I was going to see about a signal booster, but my main service is dish network and the cable is just local channels so I've never bothered with it.

It depends on alot of things really. I know that it would be pretty bad at my house since the signal is already pretty weak since I live in a rural area. It may be an entirely different story if you live closer to the fiber optics and get a much better signal. Probably the best way to know for sure would be to experiment.

Little slow with my follow up, everythign has been slow this week. 
I had a similar problem at one point and comcast provided the same solution. Recently, though we obtained an HDTV and along with it the HD programming from Comcast. Unfortuantly, not all the channels come through only like the first 6 and the rest don't work. These are basic cable channels that we payed for. Comcast came out once and said that our equipment (both TV and box) was fine. They said the signal coming into the neighborhood was weak and that they'd fix it (eventually, which hasn't happened yet). While I'm not going to get HD signals on my computer, I think that I'd better hold off taxing the signal any furthur until the problem is resolved.
What really makes me mad, is one of the channel's we don't get in HD is Fox. Now as you may or may not know, I live and die by 24. It is the only television program I watch outside of sportscenter and various sporting events. The thought of not being able to view 24 in all its high definition glory is something I can endure no longer. I will rally my militia and storm comcast's headquarters if it is not resolved immediately.
