Looks like you already got the answers you need. Also, keep in mind the sysinstall utility allows you to set up X and associated hardware (like a mouse) from the nice pretty interface, including helpful tips on which options to choose for your hardware setup.
And don't forget to always check the handbook:

Also worth a look: X11 Configuration
Also worth a read is man moused (the mouse driver).
All the answers right there at your fingertips.

to find the right device in the /dev directory, I find it works best to cat the file mapping for the device on the command line and move the mouse. 'cat /dev/psaux' or 'cat /dev/input/mouse666' etc. If the output to the screen corresponds correctly to the mouse movements, then you have the right device.
for protocol, a straight 'PS/2' worked for my simple 2 button + scroll ps/2 mouse, and I wouldnt imagine it would be different for you.

still rather lost...
porter had me kinda in the right direction with that X11 Configuration thingy...i apparently didn't have an xorg.conf ...I know made one, but i get to a point where it doesn't work, and it points me back to /stand/sysinstall which just doesn't fix anything.

You did restart X after copying the file to /etc/X11, right? (Just checking).
This is a PS/2 mouse right? In my xorg.conf file (on linux mind you, BSD may be different) I use protocol IMPS/2, not sysmouse. If the mouse WORKS (ie you move the mouse and the cursor doesn't just sit there) then the system is seeing it, but interpreting the movements wrong. This sounds to me like a protocol issue.
