Swear rule pt.2
« on: May 16, 2003, 04:00:40 PM »

Alright now some things were said and I DIDNT GET TO REBUTT! Geez....dont reply and close the topic without a good rebuttal.

Ok hears the example of bastard in a non offensive manner.

That m4 bastardized me...

Man that grenade was a real bastard.

OH MY GOD< I JUST BEEN MADE A BASTARD! (usualy said when you lose a team or clan mate)

Those are just three, but there are legitimate uses of the word in a non-offensive manner.

Anthropolgy and the bible. Well most of what is rules seems to be based off ethics, and the bible is the primary source of modern day ethics (I prefer ethos). That is why the bible was referred to in my post in the previous topic.

Far as the legal age to play cs? Well I can tell you this much starting with cs:cz if you are under 18 years of age you will not be able to buy a copy of cs. Thats the software rating system for you. Now if that isnt adhered, new bills are in congress making stiffer penalties for those that would purchase software deemed inappropriate for a minor. Now as to what was said, this is an adult game, why do you think if you enable the blood filter, cs wont be playable? Cause thats the parents responsibility now. But with so many children playing this adult game, the software advocacy group has decided to step in. So starting prolly this fall, it will be only adults on cs, unless you want to risk the chance of a fine or jail time....

I'll believe that when I see it.  Can't tell you how many mommies bought their kids gorefest games like SoF2 and Postal2 right in front of me, when the kid barely reaches my hip.  Once I actually asked the parent if they had any idea of what they were buying for their little kid, and they hadn't even looked at the box.  Even worse though is music.  I saw a parent buy some kid a Slipknot album and I swear the kid couldn't have been in second grade yet!

I can't imagine any store refusing to sell a game to an adult even if it's obviously for a kid standing right next to them who is obviously 10-11 years old.  It's like when you were a kid and you had your bigger brother buy you your booze.

Personally though, I root for the labelling concept.  At least it gives concerned parents an idea about what they're buying for their kids...seeing as so many parents are clueless.

Yeah, that'd be my Dads wife buying Eminem and Kid Rock for my little bro.  I just laughed when she told me she got them for him.  It's sorta different I guess, but I know what you mean.

I don't care how many legitimate uses of the word 'bastard' you can find.  The fact is that, no matter it's context, people find the word offensive.

We're not here to be lexicographers and discern exact meanings of words.  It isn't our job to explain to the world that saying bastard can 'be ok most of the time'.

This isn't about ethics.  It's about not using offensive words when in a public forum.

The age issue: The USA isn't the only country which plays CS.  Therefore congress and it's software control has little effect on me or anyone young or old outside of the US.

Kids play in the server.  Kids see the word 'bastard' being used.  They see that it's the only word they can get away with.  So they repeatedly use it.  They don't care about the bible, they don't care about ethics, they just regurgitate what they see.

Is it so hard to show a little restraint on the server and not type it in?  Is it so hard to respect the admins here by bringing this minor issue up with them personally through PM?  Does everything have to be shoved into our faces and argued and counter-argued for thread after thread?

This isn't a rebuttal.  This isn't an attempt to induce a 'rebuttal'.  This is my opinion and I guarantee you plenty of people here share this opinion.
