Two Internets?

What with all the ballyhoo lately about the UN threatening to forcible take control of the Internet's root Domain Name Servers (which are currently run by the US and ICANN), I thought it might be a good time to post a quick note for a universal meeting point. The following is a link to iCabbit's website, but in the form of a raw IP address instead of the usual fully qualified domain name (FQDN). Bookmark it. Please. If our governments decide not to get along, we'll be able to meet there regardless of the state of the DNS infrastructure.

Do we have to supply our own tinfoil hats or is Yurei footing the bill for them too?

In the event that DNS went down wouldn't we still be able to reach the csreloaded.com machine by it's ip? (66.208.97.103)

Not exactly. CSR is a virtual host. If you try that IP alone, I believe you get an virtual directory listing denied. Without the DNS name as part of the HTTP request, the webserver doesn't know which ReconGamer hosted site to serve up. Plus, iCabbit is local to me, which means even if DNS goes down I can still FTP into it locally to maintain the website, whereas who knows what would happen with RG. I just wanted a higher degree of control over the environment should the need arise.

I looked into it and that is indeed correct. If DNS goes down, a virtual host is hard to get to. Wikipedia tells me that you could get to CSR by adding csreloaded.com mapped to the IP in the /etc/hosts file on a unix-based machine. I am sure that there is a similar thing you can do in windows as well.

Windows has a hosts file too, but good luck getting everyone here to find and edit it. It's just easier to have them follow the link to iCabbit and hit Ctrl-D.

I believe you could set up Apache on iCabbit as a reverse proxy so that http://69.219.133.209/csreloaded would access the content of csreloaded.com. As long as csreloaded.com was in iCabbit's /etc/hosts.

In all honesty I just can't see this happening. I'm sure that ICANN has a tendency to piss people (countries) off every now and then, but 'forking' the internet certainly is not the answer, and EVERYONE knows it. The web is too entrenched in it's current iteration. If this did ever come to reality then a bridge would have to be found. We live in a world of global economies, and I'm not willing to believe that the UN (as much as I hate the UN) and the EU is stupid enough to simply unplug everyone. This is posturing, and nothing more. This move would benefit NONE and harm too many to even be considered a possibility.

The article says ICANN is not-for-profit. Besides, if the US has been funding it by themselves, surely sharing responsibility would mean sharing funding as well? Not that I think they should split it up mind - I'd have thought it would only make things harder to keep track of, but then I don't know too much about this type of thing.

Before anyone does anything they need to check with Al Gore after all he did invent the internet so he may have some good ideas on how to resolve this.
