For all you peecee owners who think Macs cost too much, there is the new iMac mini. Basically, if you've already got a Windows machine, get a Mac for $500.

And for music lovers who can't afford a $300+ iPod, check out the ultra-small, more affordable, iPod shuffle.

If you're going to buy a hard drive based mp3 player (or whatever format) I'd definately go with the iPod. For something other than a HD player, I don't think I'd get one without a screen. Which is probably why that "Shuffle" thing is only $100. It just seems like a glorified flash memory drive.

I agree 100%  In my opinion, they are a trendy overpriced fashion statement. The technology is getting better very quickly and the last thing I want to do is to drop several hundred dollars on something and be unhappy in two years.

I was helping a friend shop for laptops over christmas, and he didn't want to spend more than $1500 and wanted something lightweight.. He ended up buying an iBook for $1299 because the windows-based laptops in that price range were total junk. The apple felt solid, had better battery life, a better display (not to mention OS X which looks great sitting next to XP), and was just all-around nicer. If you are buying a lightweight notebook an iBook will not cost much and there is rediculous value there.

Why are iPods so popular then? They have a 55% market share. More than half of every person that owns ANY kind of mp3 player owns an iPod. That's not to say that makes them a good product: just a popular one, but still-- their popularity has to be explained by something, right?

I own an iPod, and so does Yuna, yurei, PK, Tenshi's girlfriend (and for that matter so does every third person I see on campus here), but none of us have ever owned anything BUT an iPod, so I'd be harder pressed to say why I prefer an iPod than to ask you why you DON'T prefer it.

Personally, I can't think of anything to complain about, other than the price of course, but after you've used one for a while it makes it more and more worth it. Plus, the 20GB iPod is only $300, and in terms of capacity alone, that's a steal compared to ANY other mp3 player.

I guess it really depends on how much a part of your life music is. Even though most people usually define my taste in music as "outright crap," I couldn't get anything done ever without music in the background. And iPod is largely superfluous, since it's hardly ever essential to have music available to you at any given time, but then so were the Sony Discmans that everyone had back in the 90's.

Anyway, why aren't they worth it to you?

Anyway, why aren't they worth it to you?

1) I have an MP3 discman, which does 90% of the things that an iPod can. I payed $70 for it.

2) I have more than 20mb of mp3's accumulated. I KNOW that in 3 years, they are going to hold much more than that, and will be much cheaper.

3) At $500+ a pop (canadian), I could buy alot of things that will bring me alot more enjoyment for the same price.

4) I also always have music on when I am doing work on a computer. I use edna (edna.sourceforge.net) which lets me stream my entire collection to myself wherever I am easily and for free.

Zing. I'd smite you, but it wouldn't do any good. Macs suck at exactly one thing: games, and even that they're getting tons better at.

That's fine. But you're missing the user interface, the transfer speed, the storage capacity and possibly even the battery life of the iPod. You've definitely got it on price, and if that's what is important to you, then enjoy your 78 pound stack of CDs it would take to match the capacity of the iPod.

Oh, and how much do you spend on batteries each year? That's gotta be included in your price to be fair.

2) I have more than 20mb of mp3's accumulated. I KNOW that in 3 years, they are going to hold much more than that, and will be much cheaper.

That's a non-argument and you know it. Things will ALWAYS have twice the capacity, be twice as fast and twice as small next year. If you were always going to wait for "the next big thing" you'd be waiting the rest of your life without ever buying ANYTHING. You have to eventually realize that computer equipment ALWAYS has a shelf life. Of course there's going to be a bigger iPod next year (the iPod Photos are already up to 60GB, btw), but you'll likely have more music, pictures, movies, whatever next year, so what difference does it make? It definitely is NOT an argument against the iPod specifically.

Plus, I still know people that are getting a heck of a lot o use out of their first generation iPods from 2 years ago. Sure they're not as big, but they still work just as well. Especially when it comes to computers, things are obsolete when you choose to stop using them.

Again, that's a personal choice, and I'm not about to argue it. At the same time, just because it doesn't suit your needs doesn't make the iPod any less of an awesome product.

Works great when you have a computer in front of you and a fast enough connection to support the stream, yeah (iTunes has a built-in sharing mechanism, btw). When I'm sitting at my computer, I use my music library there too, but walking between classes, and on trips in the car, I don't think edna is going to help you. Again, we're talking about meeting needs/desires, and if yours are met, good, but again, it doesn't change the fact that for the rest of the known world, iPods rock.

i own an ipod and ive owned a MiniDisk player.  I can tell you that the Ipod is a helluva lot better than a minidisk player.  However, i have some serious gripes about the Ipod...for one the battery life sucks (12 hours for the first few weeks, then maybe 2-3 hrs after that), AND apple thought enough to seal the case shut so you cant go to radio shack and buy a new battery...you have to send it back to apple, WHICH SUCKS.  Another con would def be the hefty price tag, but i dont mind that much...made it easy to get my music and other files over from my other computer onto this one.  If i had a choice to do it all over again, i would probably choose an IRiver or something like that.

How in the heck did you manage that? My iPod's been holding it's charge since I got it back in October, with daily use! yu^rei's has been working consistently since last year! Now that's anecdotal evidence sure, but if you seriously were getting 2 hours out of it after a couple weeks, you either got a defective unit or you weren't charging it right. There really isn't any other reason to explain it.

I agree that the battery thing is a bit of a judgment call. Giving the thing a battery compartment would have ruined TONS of the aesthetic that people love about it. It's also important to point out that in the first 90 days, they'll repair your iPod for free, and if you think it's worth it to dish out even more cash, you can buy a 3 year AppleCare Protection Plan for $60 that covers everything.

I think we're getting back into a personal preference discussion here.  Wasn't this talked about a while back?  I think the ipod and ipod mini are great products.  I think the ishuffle is a decent attempt by Apple to join the flash based mp3 player market.  I think the Ipod is overpriced.  I think there are some very good alternatives to the ipod if you care to explore them.  But with all that in mind I have an ipod mini.  And for me it was an asthetics decision.  I say go with what ever suits your needs and your budget, but just because other products might not fit those criteria does not mean they aren't good products.

On a side note, WHERE IS MY G5 POWERBOOK?!?!?!?!?!? GRRRRRR ARRRGGGHHH

I just realized the Mac mini is essentially an ibook without the LCD, keyboard, track pad, and battery.  It even comes with a 4200RPM notebook hard drive

The ironic thing is that it weighs less than what my iBook does-- the mini is only 2.9 pounds!

That's makes sense, look at what's missing.  I don't know how much LCD's weight, but the ibook battery probably weights a pound or so.  Both the mini and the ibook probably have the same structural weight.  So the battery and LCD probably make up bulk of the difference between the two.

changing subjects just a little while still keeping with music players.. is anyone else excited about sony's PSP? i'm always a bit skeptical when a company tries to enter a new system into the video game market (i was very skeptical of Microsoft's Xbox, but they did an awesome job marketing that). its gonna be quite pricey on release day.. i think the current prediction is a little less then $200 for the system, then $150 if you want to a 1GB memory stick to truely appreciate it.. but this thing can play games with PS2 quality, you can put mp3's and FULL LENGTH movies on the memory stick. i really hope the psp is successful..

Surprising even myself when saying this, I have no interest in portable gaming devices.   The PSP is going to be the best thing ever, assuming they didn't let the people that design the software for their mp3 players anywhere near it. Those things look nice as hell, but they are about as user friendly as a dentist drill.
