Career?

I just had a guest lecture at Uni from a guy who set up his own consultancy company called "Palantir" - yes, the seeing eye-ball in LOTR - and is now helming a thriving business.

I was just wondering what sort of jobs/careers/goals/dreams you guys have?  I know this is probably a question fired at the college-goers all the time but hopefully you won't mind sharing.

I know a lot of you are into computing/tech related stuff and I'm sure there are a lot of creative people out there who want to go into design or sea-piracy or HollyWood...

For my part, after finishing Uni I'm planning on starting up a film and media production company with 1 or 2 friends and family.  Mainly writing/recording/editing/distributing, with all of us chipping into the creative process and me running the business aspects.

Anyone else got plans, pursuing plans or already happy with where they are?

I just wanna get paid for what I do here. That would be a great job. Of course, the ultimate dream job for me would be as a programmer for Apple, but I'm smart enough to know I'm not smart enough (i.e.: not a good enough programmer) to manage that, at least not right off the bat.

or sea-piracy

I've always wanted to try my hand at being a pirate. I think I can pull off a pretty convincing "Yarrrrrrrrrr" and I can swashbuckle with the best of them.

A professional musician would be nice and I don't mean a rockstar (though I'd take it). I'd much rather play a "gig" then sit in an office. About as likely as being a pirate, since my song writing is terrible. I could never be more than a cover band...ick.

I'm still in high school, so I've got time to sort this out.

Well, I finish my Software Engineering degree in about two months, but the software industry in Hickville, Alberta kinda sucks. Starting a career in my field would likely involve moving somewhere far away (and lacking wholesome canadian socialist values ) and I am not sure I am quite prepared for that yet.

I also find myself quite enjoying going to school, and my plans for after I graduate are leaning heavily towards grad school. I think it would be really awesome to slow down the pace a little and spend time studying things that I enjoy the most.

Getting jobs in the software industry is all about the experience you have. If I were to take a job now, it would proabably be as a low-level code monkey, and I would have to work that for several years before I could land something decent. That just doesnt appeal to me all that much, so it makes sense to gain a little more prestiege on my resume by going to school for two more years.

After I get my master's I will probably go hunting after the bucks somewhere, preferably doing software development for embedded systems.

SG the life of a musician also appeals to me somewhat but not only am I an awful guitarist but I guarantee my song-writing is far worse than yours.  I've penned such classics as "Cut You Up" and "Give Me Back My Shoe".

Terr - does grad school cost as much in Canada as it does for people in the States?  I'm gonna be satisfied with my MA once I finish here in May.

If anyone wants to form a serious band of pirates then I'm in.  I need to work on my "Yarrr" but I've got an eye-patch and some rum.  We can make our main target Apple and walk them off the plank til they give a job to Porter.

Aside from debating what kind of system is 'Regular',
I would like to say that in general, people are stupid, people using computers a stupider, and I dont want to be the one having to spend all my time worrying about all the mistakes they are invevitably going to make. ( gosh, that does sound highbrow   Lets just say that programming GUI's robbed me of my will to live at one point)

Grad school doesn't cost that much here if you are a canadian citizen. (wholesome socialist values remember?) As I am sure there is everywhere else, there is a bunch of financial assistance available if you are hot stuff. The tuition for grad courses is about the same as undegraduate (about $500 Canadian a pop). Student loans are fairly easy to come by as well. Luckily I lived at home for the 4 years of my Bachelors, so I have very little debt currently.

well justboy, you know me ,id say go law enforcment, but,it has it has its ups and downs. examples are i go to the office, get changed, get a roll call and get in my car and do 6 hours of driving,i deal with all kinds of people, scumbags, the good the bad and the ugly, i have paperwork galore to do during and after work and usually have followups to deal with  that could take a week.the down sides you probably know.last May i lost my partner of 5 years and last december i lost my wife to cancer and i feel i missed out alot of her life by doing 10 and 12 hour shifts but trying to make my community better, it took about 2 and half years to become a cop by simply taking a course called *Police Foundations* and when i got my credit i applied at precincts around my area and was hired, when i got hired they sent me back to a police college where i finished as 1st PL class,i am now ranked 3rd PC

Toby I just gotta say I give anyone in law enforcement alot of credit.
I have a few friends that are on the job and I know that I couldn't deal with a lot of what they have to deal with on a daily basis.

I'm with you Skip - I think Law Enforcement takes so much more tolerance, understanding and level-headedness than I could ever muster - I'd totally crumble.

Toby thanks for posting and I have to say that what you've achieved is really impressive.    I can't imagine how tough it has been for you and I'm really sorry for your losses.  I don't know what more to say because I'm really stunned by your story.  However we look at it, I think improving the community and keeping it safe is admirable.

On a kind of lighter note, the paperwork has got to suck though right?  Are there any measures for cutting down on it in Canada just now?  When I was in France one of the big pushes they were having throughout education and the legal system was to cut down on bureacracy cos it costs time and money.

Terr - I also have no debt because my parents funded me through Uni and I got a bursary so I'm on easy street thus far.  I did work full time in summer though.  My parents want to fund me though - they always planned it for both of us and wouldn't have us get stuck in the rut of student debt.  So it's not like we're leeching that bad...

hey justboy, the paperwork is never ending, when ever there is is acall my dispatch creates an incident report, when i respond and resolve that incident i have to create my own incident report and create a clearing report which in turn closes the incident report, but if there were charges i have a case, which means paperwork for me,courts, police cheif and victim or complaintant.then we accident reports strictly for motor vehical accidents which insurance companys need copys and they want to know charges and so on,so really jb its never ending lol.
thanks skip and jb for the comments

I've just helped LABETE sign up to the forums and he's gonna post in French and I'm gonna translate as much as I can for you guys while his English improves .

His message:

Hi everyone, how goes it today? I'm good as always.

At the minute I am at school and am finishing my last year, after which I'm going to do carpentry/joinery.  I stay in Quebec and speak French.  I don't speak English but I get by ok all the same.  I want to do carpentry cos its a really interesting career and I want to do manual work as I'm good with my hands.

Bye everyone and catch you later

+GGz too bad I can only give one every 24 hours, otherwise I'd keep clicking.

X if you don't like math, why did you pick that?

Edit: Fair enough and JB solved my problem.

To Labete use you carpentry skills to make guitars.

I don't know. That yar was might weak, and unless you can play the keytar we've got no room in the pirate band.

Yes, many a non seafaring type has come from far and wide to hear an old scallywag tell his tales; putting it to music could only increase its popularity.

Toby, I've always wanted to be a drummer, but it wasn't going to happen based on my total lack of full body coordination. I can't do jumping jacks in sync, let alone bang on drums. What kind of music did/do you play?

Yes! Fooljeff must join the merry band!  If you know how to get hold of cheap grog then let us know too.  I assume it's some sort of weak acid mixed with hops...

Milkman's Son you say Tobe?  Not bad but wait for this...Pedro used to play drums (well, percussion - mostly bongos) in a band called Broadstone Earth!!!  He even has a BE T-Shirt which we had made up for him.

I wish I'd taken lessons with my guitar when I was younger but to be honest I'm pretty happy just using it as a stress-reliever and rocking out.  I got this awesome FX Pedal - ZoomGFX-707 and the options are incredible.  I can wah-wah a little Hendrix and crunch some Brand New and twinkle the odd bit of 3EB.

Toby my dearest brother!  The way we met and finding out we both lost loved ones to cancer and then finding out the same day was also your wife•s Birthday has bonded us forever.  That was way to freaky not to be a sign!
I commend all the gentleman around the world who defends societies in one way or another putting on a uniform.  When I hear the stories from you about partners and guys on your force being killed it scares the hell out of me, for YOU!  It would kill me to hear something happening to you mate!  I say the one gift of loosing your wife has yet to be completely fulfilled, insurance paid off everything you said.  The real gift of that decision you and your wife made probably went a lot deeper.  You get that insurance because you want your partner to be ok after one of you may pass away.  I would make a guess here but I bet your wife would love to see you doing something else less dangerous.  I know you love putting on that uniform but maybe there is another love also.  The point and matter is there will always be bad guys you can•t change the world.  I do not see the possible sacrifice of somebody like you with your good nature being possibly consumed by the evil in the world.  I try and stay away from anything or anybody that may cause me harm nowadays.
Dude every night you sign off to go to work causes me stress now!  You are in a unique position right now and a great age and should really consider your options.
    Your brother Eni!

Eni is a Trade Broker, Realator, Investment Owner, Income Property, Designer/Contractor who believes in multiple stream of income and loves the guitar!  Labete working on houses and carpentry are one of my favorite things to do and Landscaping!

They are an extremely technologically challenged company, you would die lauggin if you saw the piece of crap CRM tool we use.

Its accounts not accountants silly.

stewart coupland-the police(lol)

I love The Police, they made a lot of great music. The first cd(s) I ever bought was their box set. Best $50 dollars I ever spent.

I seem to have this thing for bands that broke up a few years before I was born.

Skip, I checked out the link.

I doubt that will be moving anytime soon. Does your company  organize trades?

When I retire I want to live in Britanny in France.  Maybe run my own bar/cafe and just chew the fat with the locals.  Invite all my family and friends to stay and show them where I spent some of the best times of my life.  I'd also like to have a home here in Scotland but with my pipe dreams I'll probably not make enough cash so I'll have to live in Grounded's spare room.

Sorry about the mis-read Skimps, but can you imagine what 220 accountants would look like?  Probably like 220 people but with more clipboards.

I have a lovely job, that I absolutely hate....I suppose it's not the job itself, more the company really. I work at a Real Estate Title Insurance company as a residential closer. That means when you go to buy your house and you do all the fun paper work (like signing the mortgage and your life away to a bank) I'm the one there making sure everything runs smoothly. We do a lot of commercial projects in Chicago for Habitat for Humanity, Chicago Housing Authority and HUD (the Dept. of Housing and Urban Development of Washington D.C.). Sounds not so bad, but man oh man...that's all I'm gonna say.

And if you think Skip's website was weak.

The massive italic XPRESS scares me a bit.  I'd like to go to Chicago some time, A: To be drunk under the table by boozehound X-Factor and B: To go to the ER and meet Dr Carter after whom I model my existence.

I actually thought Skip's site looked fine.  It would appear that I don't know what makes a good website these days.

In this day and age and what we do we just got an e-commerce site and trust me when Skip says it's sub par it is sub-par!  Look at other exchanges and compare, our own clients find it difficult in certain areas.  We work for the grinch who stole trade!

Yes, we are a corporate trade exchange that organizes the transfer of products and services between members as an alternative to spending cash for said products and services. Those chairs probably aren't moving anytime soon, but.... we do have a Zamboni available.

The items on our emarketplace can make the company look kind of Mickey Mouse, but I helped offset about $50,000 worth of the cost of two members new home construction last year so there are big ticket items too.

You're just jealous because I have my own office with a nice golf painting on one wall and a giant white board on another.

That Microsoft pic is outstanding.  It makes me wonder about a few things, mainly...the 70s...what were we thinking?

My wife and I were discussing that just the other day.  We are advancing so fast the 70's seems so long ago but it's a spec of time.  We look like cavemen who found polyester!
