apple moving to intel

I dont like the idea but it seems true
"...At today•s Apple WWDC in SF, Jobs declared the PowerPC has been •living a secret double life.• We know it•s more than just getting 15 •integer perf units• per watt to Intel•s 70•like, say, having consistant troubles getting to that magical 3.0GHz marker, or those pesky heat issues. Steve•s solution? Go Intel. And just as everyone had been expecting, a secret Intel build of OS X had been kept in house for the past half decade, just waiting for a reason to be loosed upon the world. They expect the full transition to Intel-based machines to be complete by 2007...."

This isn't as big a deal as it sounds....
UPDATE: After Jobs' presentation, Apple Senior Vice President Phil Schiller addressed the issue of running Windows on Macs, saying there are no plans to sell or support Windows on an Intel-based Mac. "That doesn't preclude someone from running it on a Mac. They probably will," he said. "We won't do anything to preclude that." However, Schiller said the company does not plan to let people run Mac OS X on other computer makers' hardware. "We will not allow running Mac OS X on anything other than an Apple Mac."
So don't even think that this is anything more than a platform change. YOU WILL STILL HAVE TO BUY APPLE HARDWARE TO RUN OS-X.
This, I believe, is a mistake. Why move to x86 if you're still going to force the general public into buying your hardware. It just doesn't make sense....in addition, how long before Microsoft figures out how to run WindowsXP (or longhorn) on Apple hardware??? Would it not make more sense to allow 3rd party distributors (Dell, hello, are you listening?) to package PC's with OS-X. They are already starting to do it with Linux, but Linux doesn't have the brand recognition that Apple does.
I just don't get it.

Don't be too shocked my my silence. I was at Great America all of yesterday, and just got around to watching the WWDC Keynote late last night.

The reason is clear, as I have explained before: Apple is a hardware company. They sell computers. All of the software and accessories they also sell, including Mac OS X (and excluding the iPod, which is a hardware seller of its own), are there simply to drive hardware sales. Apple would never make it as a software company, and if you can run Apple software on any old PC, why buy an Apple computer that costs more? Everything Apple does is to drive sales of their computers, and once you accept this, it becomes clear why they wouldn't want any old PC running Mac OS X.
As for Microsoft, they already have Windows XP running on PowerPC platforms. When they started work on the Xbox 2, Microsoft took delivery of some 60 PowerMac G5 towers to use as development platforms, running a custom-compiled NT kernel for the PowerPC architecture. There's nothing stopping them from releasing a PowerPC version of Windows, other than there isn't much market for it-- and there REALLY won't be two years from now after Apple completes their transition.
An of course I have my own personal take on this, which is that I'm considering selling my stock. The question I keep asking myself is; what makes a Mac special if it's just a PC with OS X?? That's not to say my mind won't be changed as I watch them start the transition from PowerPC to Intel, but I'm certainly not excited by this move. I don't think it's wise for lots of reasons, but I've been surprised by the success of Apple's choices in the past, so I reserve judgment until the first Intel-based Macs hit the market.
If you all want to hear the scoop straight from the horse's mouth, I suggest you take the time to watch Steve Jobs' Keynote address.

Again, this is where the logic fails me.... What difference to me, the consumer, does this move make? Mr. and Mrs. computer buyer don't really care what architecture their computer runs on (if they did Apple would have gone to x86 many moons ago), so why does this move make any sense at all? The only possible benefit I can see as a consumer is the ability to dual boot Apple/Windoze, and it is possible that this will have some positive impact on Mac sales.
My main point is that Apple has a wonderful product in OS X. My initial assumption was that they would leverage that product (along with a continued push towards getting people to buy their hardware) and allow Mom and Pop computer buyer to have another alternative to MS, one that Dell, HP, Gateway and the like might even be willing to sell along side their pre-loaded Windows machines.

Watch the keynote I posted above; Jobs explains (weakly, if you ask me, but explains nonetheless) the reasoning behind the switch.

More commentary from Code Poetry and Daring Fireball.
Even if everything else is still way up in the air, one this is certain: this is gonna be a big deal for Apple and the industry.

Why would this switch make me want to buy an apple? With it running on the x86 platform will it be able to run the same programs as my windows machine? Or does it not really determine stuff like that?

It has yet to be determined how easy or hard some of the new avenues this switch opens up will be. For one thing, it has already been confirmed that Intel-based Macs can boot Windows natively, meaning instead of having two machines like I am forced to have, you can now use a dual-boot Mac (Mac OS X + Windows) to play games. As far as native Mac gaming goes, games will still have to be developed for OS X, the same way they have to be developed for Macs and PCs now. That level is dependent on the operating system and APIs available, and they will still be different for Windows and OS X. On the other hand, free software like WINE will run on x86 Macs natively, and if Apple or MS doesn't do it, you can bet somebody else will write the software to allow Mac OS X to run Windows programs natively right from OS X.
As for why this transition in particular would make you want to switch to Apple, it doesn't in itself present any new reasons. The old reasons still apply regardless of the CPU Apple uses in its computers (in roughly decreasing importance): quality, security, productivity, ease of use, seamless integration of everything, and style. Those have always been the reasons people have seen fit to spend a premium on a superior computer, whether it's an Apple or a PC. Using an Intel processor doesn't really change any of that, expect for the fact that Apple believes it can deliver better machines with them over PowerPC chips.

The best advice I can give is this: Whenever you're trying to figure out how to do something new, think of the simplest possible way to accomplish the task, and then do it-- it'll work.
