AMD's anti-trust case against Intel

Not sure if any of you are following this.... quite interesting.

This case (very similar in some ways to the case against Micro$oft) revolves mainly around AMD's claim that Intel specifically contracted with PC manufacturers to keep them from buying and using AMD chips (ie 'If you want to continue buying our (Intel's) chips, you WON'T buy from AMD).

I have attached the initial filing to this post, in case anyone wants to take a gander. It's a little dry, but it's not ALL legaleze and jargon, alot of it makes perfect sense, provided that AMD can proove it. Check out www.groklaw.com as well, as they are covering the case (along with several others).

This case is a big gamble for AMD. The unfortunate thing is, if they loose, we might ALL stand to loose. AMD and Intel (for the most part) are it for us 'regular folks', and I personally prefer AMD over Intel, mainly for price reasons. I would hate to see AMD get dragged under if they loose this case. Personally, I don't think that they will. This case falls on the heels of a case in Japan, where Intel was found (somewhat) guilty of several of the charges that AMD is levying against it. What with that, and the fact that some of their allegations are outside of Intels ability to hide (read the section regarding Intel's C compiler specifically producing slower executables for AMD chips by leaving out SSE 2 and 3 instructions and using a one character memcopy), and I think that their hands are dirtier then they realize.

It doesn't count as a proper anti-trust case unless Intel are also trying to take over the world

Does it count if my army of flexing robots bent on world domination are running on Intel chips?

There are certainly some dirty tactics in there, but I think Slight hit on an important point when he said we all stand to lose if AMD loses. It's about choice, and AMD's cheaper (but usually equally powerful) offerings help drive prices down and encourage increasing performance, even if you don't prefer AMD chips personally. Encouraging competition is good for everybody, and writing compilers or binding customers from buying competitor products only discourages it. Bad form, Intel.

Being a Mac user, I have even more incentive to rally for AMD. Even though Apple has only announced a partnership with Intel, again it would be beneficial for everyone to have AMD there offering competitive alternatives: both to consumers, and to Apple. I would personally be more accepting of an AMD-based Mac than I would of an Intel-based one.
