Guild Wars

I wasn't satisfied to let everyone else go off and start playing all these MMO's without getting in the action a bit. Of course, my biggest criticism of them has always been the monthly fees, since I'm usually unwilling to pay $50 for a game to begin with much less an extra $10 or $15 every month. That's why I was a little more open to Guild Wars, which doesn't have a subscription fee at all. A friend of PK's got him hooked, and he subsequently got yu^rei, and then Yuna and I, hooked as well.
I was wondering if there are any other Guild Wars players around here, since we could always use some dependable people to run missions with (and/or to fill out our guild: The Order of Spirits.)

Once you get emersed(sp!!) in the atmosphere of the game then it becomes very very fun!!!
then after a while its only really becomes fun if you play with people you know, from my expirence' atleast.

I actually still wouldn't even consider playing this type of game if I didn't have people I know to play it with (hence me posting about it here). To answer SG's question: I can't speak for others, but Guild Wars has a pretty interesting mission system that links your actions into an overarching (and ever continuing) plot. The NPC's are persistent in the sense that it's always the same group of people you're interacting with. The game remains under active development, so even if you were to finish the plot line as far as possible (which even after a month of play PK and the rest of us here are nowhere near reaching), ArenaNet keeps releasing new additions to the game (and since there's no subscription fee, you're getting these "expansions" for free.)

The thing I didn't like about the one I played was the fact that you had to level (and leveling took WAY to much time) to progress and advance the story line. I'm sorry but I don't have 8 hours a day or enough friends that play the game to do that. That's the biggest problem with these types of games is that you get what you put into it. If you don't have hours to spend, you don't get much out of them. I doubt this game breaks that mold (could be wrong).

Actually, your level isn't nearly as important as playing as a team. The plot-advancing missions are all cooperative, and you absolutely HAVE to have a good team in order to accomplish most of them. Complementing each others professions is important, but being a high enough level seems to be less important. They've spaced the major missions just far enough apart that by the time you reach the next one, you should already be at the minimum level you need to be in order to handle it (assuming you have a competent team with you for it).
If you've got 40 to spend SG, I would really recommend you try this one. There's no monthly fee. so you don't have to worry about paying to play once you've invested in the game. In other words, even if you don't like it so much, you can still play every once in a while without having to shell out $15 every 30 days. Plus, you're guaranteed membership in a guild filled with Wumpas, which I hope would be a decent draw.

It's great when you're 17 and all your income is disposable. I can swing the money no problem. Do you guys play regularly? Since I'm starting fresh, doesn't that just hold you back or prevent me from playing with you guys? If I have to play a lot by myself or with randoms to catch up with you guys, I'd be considerably less interested.
That and the money could easily be spent on Season 3 of 24 which I still haven't bought.
You bought it on Amazon I suppose?
Or some serious teeth kickin'
Better yet, a rack for my 7 guitars, 4 of which I don't own yet.
Guild Wars has some tough competition there. You can never count Jack out and I hear some guys in Vegas have the stand as a sleeper pick.

As chagrined as I am to say this, we do. It's captivated us quite a lot actually, and you can usually find one or all of us on at least a couple nights a week.
Since I'm starting fresh, doesn't that just hold you back or prevent me from playing with you guys? |
|
Each "account" (attached to a single CD key) is allowed to have 4 characters within it. All of us Wumpas already have at least two characters, one "low level" and one high. In addition, PK and I still both have characters who are still "pre-Searing" (The Searing is the first major event in the game and very literally splits the game in two. In terms of content, the split is probably 20/80 though. You'll start the game pre-Searing, but you'll spend the vast majority of the game in the post-Searing world.)
If I have to play a lot by myself or with randoms to catch up with you guys, I'd be considerably less interested. |
|
My pre-Searing character is going to be permanently pre-Searing for the sole purpose of escorting new players through the early parts of the game. Between all of us, you'll have plenty of company until you get caught up. The nice thing about the experience system is that the higher level you are, the less XP you get for the easier enemies. I'm sure this is a standard feature in MMOs, but it allows lower level characters to "catch up" to advanced characters even if they're playing in the same group. Since the enemies are geared for the weaker characters, you don't have to worry about being in over your head either.
That and the money could easily be spent on Season 3 of 24 which I still haven't bought. Guild Wars has some tough competition there. You can never count Jack out and I hear some guys in Vegas have the stand as a sleeper pick. |
|
Decent alternatives. The choice is yours of course and if you don't think you're going to have a good time, then you'd better get 24 or the stand. At the same time, it's gotta same something that I'M playing this MMO-- a genre I otherwise openly hate.
porter do you still level in guidl wars? i heard you dont level and all you do is play through? Im probably wrong
|
|
Yes, you still get XP and you still level. You gain strength in the skills of your profession as you level, but the points you put into your skills are re-assignable. For example, if you're an Elementalist (a heavy duty spell-based damage dealer), you have Air, Earth, Fire and Water attributes that you can pump skill points into. The points aren't permanent though, so if you've taken 12 levels in fire magic but you're entering an area of the world where the monsters are more susceptible to water magic, you can "refund" your levels in fire and reassign them to water magic. You also take a second profession, and get most of the benefits of it (such as being able to keep an animal pet if you take Ranger as your secondary profession). Overall, it's a wonderfully flexible system that allows you to customize your characters endlessly. There's actually quite a lot of strategy involved.

I guess I should have mentioned it before, but in case it wasn't clear, I'm not exactly an MMO expert. I only have experience with Guild Wars, so while I can tell you just about anything about GW specifically, take my comparisons to other games with a grain of salt. All I know is that every other MMO I've ever looked at has been thoroughly unappealing, but this one (once I got over my initial prejudice of ALL MMOs) seems to be unique.

Well, I was running it on a Radeon 7000 64MB (5 years old). It ran perfectly smoothly at 1024 as long as you kept the graphics turned down a bit. Now that I have my Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB, I can run it with 4X anti-aliasing and everything turned all the way up without problems. The rest of my system is an Athlon XP 3000, 1GB Dual Channel DDR, and onboard audio/ethernet.
The game really doesn't require a very advanced system to run well, it just ups the eye-candy considerably if you've got the hardware to support it. I would say the minimum specs are fairly conservative-- meaning you could get away with even less without noticing too much slow down. Things might get choppy in the more intense battles when there are 20+ characters and enemies on-screen, but it should play decently otherwise. I have to give the game credit for scaling its graphics extremely well though. It does a great job even with older hardware.

Woo hoo!
SG and I just had our first mini-session, including much muscle flexing (appropriately!)
Expect the rest of us to be on tonight after Sci-Fi Friday goodness (new Battlestar Galactica and SG-1 baby!) which should be around 10 PM Central.
Skip, if you can pick this one up after work, you should!
Here are our Guild Wars names for reference:
Adoorin Woodsoul, Noruwin Woodsoul, and Thorwin Woodsoul = Porter Sariana Facade, Chester A Arthur = Phoenix Knight Mystic Greenleaf = Yuna Kahl Deth, Richard M Nixon, Mordell the White = yu^rei
You only have to add one of our character names to your Friends list (press N) and it will automatically show any character from the entire account.
Also, keep in mind that if you have a beefy enough system, you can actually switch from fullscreen to windowed mode with the middle icon in the top right of the screen:
That makes it easy to reference this webpage while you're typing names into GW.

Availability update:
Yuna and I have to go to her cousin's birthday party this afternoon, so we won't be around from 4 to... 9 or 10 I guess? (That's CDT of course.) Apparently PK is out of town for the day too. Hard to keep track of that guy sometimes...

Game
to
buy.
All of these cost $40 (USD), though you can expect to pay $50 if you walk into the store instead of buying online. But then you'd have to pay shipping... It's a scam really.
Oh, and there's a Collector's Edition that costs twice as much, but I haven't been able to figure out what it gets you other than some sparkles surrounding your character in-game.

Ok so I was using a ge force 2 to try and run things last night. To use PK's word "harsh", I'm headed out to buy a Radeon and another 256 of memory at lunchtime. I figured as long as I've got the case open I might as well spend some more money.

Wait wait wait! I'm replying to your PM right now! RAM is SOO cheap, you can probably afford more than 256. I'll get you a link. The Radeon is a good bet. I'm writing up some tips in the PM. I'm trying to hurry-- I hope I'm not too late!

You can name it using the /namepet New Name command so it doesn't have to keep walking around as a "Melandru's Stalker".

Oh God....I feel like the last guy alive in a zombie movie and the nails holding the church door shut are really poor quality...

Same story here. I just plunked down a $20 for Doom 3 (In retrospect, Bomberman probably would have been a more solid investment) which was about the extent of my video games budget for the time being. Perhaps, I can cut into the 'food' and 'shelter' sections and grab myself this one.

No comment on the subject so much for keeping the server alive and well. I will be glad to devote some time into playing if i can get a few more people to join me. But it seems half of the population is either playing guild wars or WoW so i will just say my good byes now
