Whiplash: Don't get it.

So I was on my way to meet with a client yesterday (one of the responsibilities of my new job). The stoplight up ahead changes, and I come to a stop at the line by myself. As I'm sitting there waiting, I hear the screech of tires behind me, and I look in the rearview mirror just in time to see it completely filled with the front end of what turns out to be a fully loaded Chevy work van.
I have about enough time to think, "well $h!t" before the guy hits me. The back end of the car collapses off-center into the rear tire, and I skid 30 feet down the road before coming to a stop. My seatback has completely collapsed into a prone position: the metal bars supporting it having been bent almost 90 degrees by the impact. The sliding plastic cover for the moon-roof has been slammed into it's cavity so hard that it can't be slid forward again. My lip is bleeding from a CD case that was thrown from the glove box, and my shin is skinned from my sudden tilt backwards.
I call 911.
The other driver comes jogging up to make sure I'm okay. I get out and look back at the van that hit me. The van's airbags are completely deployed, and the front end is completely flattened with all sorts of fun liquids dripping onto the road:
Then I survey the damage to my own vehicle:
Well, that about does it for the car. Now comes the kicker: I'm still about as broke as one can be, and can't afford insurance for my car which is sitting at home in the garage. The car in the picture is in fact Yuna's 2001 Toyota Corolla Sport which we have been sharing to save money.
To be honest, that's what bugs me the most about the whole thing. If it had been MY car, I would have pretty much just shrugged it off. As it is, you have no idea what it feels like to destroy something that belongs to someone you care about so much, and that is so valuable that you don't have the means to replace it.
Anyway, afterwards yurei comes to get me and takes me to the hospital to get checked out, all the while I'm making about a hundred phone calls to insurance people and towing companies (and Yuna). The official diagnosis from the ER doc is "cervical strain," better know as whiplash. Mostly what that means is that the stabalizing muscles in my neck (nothing spinal-related thank goodness) are really freakin' sore. Rest assured that my physical state is far better than my mental state.
So to return to the title of the post: don't get whiplash. Not because it's particularly painful, but because the side effects usually are enough to ruin all sorts of plans in your life.

The sheriff issued the guy a citation, but he didn't specify for what exactly.
To be fair, that guy had a higher chance of injury than I did. He was lucky he was wearing his seat belt or could easily have gone through the windshield and be in a body bag right now.
Of course, once you've reassured yourself that everybody involved is alive and well, it's hard to feel a lot of sympathy for somebody you KNOW wasn't paying attention to the road. I mean, that guy screwed up a lot of plans. I'm not just talking short term either, like yurei having to abandon his lunch to come get me from the scene. I'm talking about things like having to re-insure MY car way before I was ready too, which consequently is going to botch a lot of my savings; Yuna having to get a new car before this one was paid off, which throws off HER finances; ultimately us moving in together, since both of us are going to be broke for longer; it just goes on...
It's easy for me to see all of the consequences as the spiral out into the future since it's my life, and I don't really expect anyone else to completely sympathize (after all, people get in car accidents all the time: it's not the end of the world) but it sure is going to mess up a lot of what I was planning to do with my life for the next couple months.

Well I still kinda like you and yuna at yurei's place, i get to visit you all in one trip
even though yuna still gives me dirty looks as soon as i say anything 1337, like "megahertz", I can see her shudder when she reads it.

Whiplash you say?
Late at night all systems go You have come to see the show We do our best You're the rest You make it real you know There is a feeling deep inside That drives you f*****' mad A feeling of a hammerhead You need it oh so bad
Adrenaline starts to flow You're thrashing all around Acting like a maniac Whiplash
Bang your head against the stage Like you never did before Make it ring Make it bleed Make it really sore In a frenzied madness with your leather and your spikes Heads are bobbing all around It is hot as hell tonight
Adrenaline starts to flow You're thrashing all around Acting like a maniac Whiplash
Here on the stage the Marshal noise is piercing through your ears It kicks your ass kick your face Exploding feeling nears Now is the time to let it rip To let it f***** loose We are gathered here to maim and kill Cause this is what we choose
Adrenaline starts to flow You're thrashing all around Acting like a maniac
The show is through the metal is gone It is time to hit the road Another town Another gig Again we will explode Hotel rooms and motorways Life out here is raw But we will never stop We will never quit cause we are Metallica
Adrenaline starts to flow You're thrashing all around Acting like a maniac Whiplash |
|
Sounds to me like you were at a Metallica concert...lucky.

Yuna has a rental car now (a full three days later!), so at least she (we) can get around. No idea on when the rest of all of this will fall into place.

In the meantime I have taken the liberty of looking into what my next vehicle will be (I'm sure they're going to total my Corolla). Not exactly what I wanted, but exactly what I can afford
I can't decide between Red Pearl and Racy Red, any thoughts anyone?

If affordablility is a concern, I would like to point out in a friendly way of course:
2001 Corolla Gas Milage Highway: 41mpg City: 32mpg
2006 Grand Vitara Gas Milage (and this is from the brochure ) Highway: 23mpg City: 18mpg
IMO, the world could use less SUV's.

I appreciate your research Terraji. And while it says 41 for highway, the most I got was 33 and about 25-28 city (I know it's still better than the Vitara).

And as if having my car totalled wasn't bad enough, the rental car that I have just had the check engine light come on, so now I again don't have a vehicle..... Thank you Anne at Enterprise for politely telling me I'm fucked until Monday, because YOUR car broke on a Saturday.
P.S. Don't ever rent a car from Enterprise if you can help it.
