New Displays!

Okay, so I finally got around to getting the new LCDs in place and straighten up my messy, messy desk (no time to be anal retentively clean when you work all day!)
So here's what my desk looks like now (I forgot to take a "before" picture with the 3 huge CRTs on the desk, but imagine just about enough room for the keyboard at the front edge):
(Click the image for the full-sized shot [3.1MB].)

woooh, aren't we all impressed (remember this is coming from someone who has to hear about them all the time and gets to see Porter sit at them 80% of the time).

What's the deal with the little silver thing between the two monitors?

Griffin PowerMate
Although it has many other uses, it's just about the coolest volume knob in the world.

awesome! I can feel the glow frome here (and smell the Pledge )
one question to feed my curiousity:
1) is that Virtual PC you are running XP under? or is there a machine hiding somewhere off to the right?

I'm surprised there haven't been more questions. I can see lots of little things in the full-sized image that would pique my curiosity.
The screen on the left is running XP natively from my Shuttle SN45G, which is on top of the printer cart thingy underneath the desk on the left. (If you look closely you can see the bottom edge of the silver case right below where the top of the "left wing" of the desk cuts it off.) That's part of what accounts for all of the cords going through the opening in the desk in the crook of the "L".
A sneaky person might have also noticed the two keyboards on top of and in front of the monitor on the extreme left. This is my "workbench" station. Right behind the monitor I have power, video, ethernet, keyboard and mouse plugs all tied together so I can hook a tower up quickly to work on it (I fix a lot of peecees for my friends and relatives). The extra keyboard actually belongs to the Shuttle. The latest version of Synergy finally allows me to use the Mac's keyboard and mouse for both machines (including for games like Guild Wars and CS), but that only works when Windows is running. For the few times when I need to adjust the BIOS or boot into one of the alternate OS's on the PC, I have to use it's PS/2 connected keyboard (the one in front of the workbench monitor).
And then there's the Photoshopping yurei did to the image before giving it to me...

Heh. I was holding back my questions and comment to be polite and avoid an in-depth discussion which would make me seem like a stalker . Seeing as this picture is quite a bit different than the last time you showed us this room, the possiblities for discussion are endless. But since you provoked it:
1) funky (crayon?) drawing on the wall? there has to be a story behind that. 2) Your initials on the scissors? has yurei stolen them one too many times? 3) loose power cord on the carpet in the corner? doesn't quite match the rest of the cable management. 4) stain on carpet also in the same corner. 5) plenty more cables in the same corner. one power, one network and several more unidentified cables. There must be more hidden technology in that desk. do tell. 5) Your can of Pledge must have ran our when you got to the corner of the desk where the remote is sitting. 6) 3,4 and 5 (and possibly 2) lead me to believe that the rest of the room doesn't quite live up to the same standard of neatness. Are the barbarians at the gates? 7) looking up 'STC' on google and wikipedia is not giving me interesting insight into where your pencil holder is from. I think that is a black fleur-de-lis under it though. 8 ) I would be confused as to what the tube with the coloured things in it next to your powermac, but I have seen those before and will leave it up to someone else.

Ah, that was what I was getting at with my first question. At school I have 3 keyboards, 2 mice and 1 trackpad to manage. Some simplification would be a major help. Thanks!

LMAO! Ah that was a great day. Imagine the two monitors on my desk, plus the third monitor that's on the left wing of my desk all on the main part next to my G4. That's how my desk has been up until I got these LCDs. It's SOOOO nice! Moving on!...
1) funky (crayon?) drawing on the wall? there has to be a story behind that. |
| That was actually an image Yuna created using the Mac OS X port of the GIMP. She printed it out for me and I duly hung it above my desk so I'd be reminded of her. Sappy? Sure, but she's worth it.
2) Your initials on the scissors? has yurei stolen them one too many times? |
| A left over from college actually, but you're more or less dead on. You lose one good pair of Fiskars shears and you start Sharpie-ing everything you own.
3) loose power cord on the carpet in the corner? doesn't quite match the rest of the cable management. |
| Said cord is left over from the third monitor I previously had on my desk. It was never made to hold computers and has no way to get cords from the "front" (whichever side you consider the front) to the "back" (likewise). I therefore have a power strip underneath the desk (on the inside) with the cord subsequently pinched underneath, and another on the out- (wall) side to power the accessories on top of the desk. Even so, getting to it is a royal pain, so re-using the power cords from the old ones was far easier than installing the new ones that came with the Dells. Long story short: I never bothered pulling the last one out, figuring I'd need a power cord for some dim-witted project in the future.
4) stain on carpet also in the same corner. |
| Not actually a stain, believe it or not. You can clearly see the "H" mark in the carpet in front of my desk from the kitchen chair I use in place of the office chair Yuna "ganked" for her own computer desk. The mark in the outside right corner is from the 24-packs of soda PK usually keeps stacked there.
5) plenty more cables in the same corner. one power, one network and several more unidentified cables. There must be more hidden technology in that desk. do tell. |
| Most of the technology associated with those cables goes right by my desk actually. You see, we have a very nice projector mounted on the ceiling, which powers our "TV" (the wall behind the older shot you linked to). (Chronologically this next picture is the oldest of them all.)
My desk now stands about where the "RENARD" street sign is leaning (a whole other story in itself).
Anyway, the speakers are naturally on the screen wall, as are the game systems since the controller cords don't reach from around the back of the couch so well (from where the DVR, VCR, DVD player and stereo all live underneath the projector). The speaker wires and a RCA triplet cable is what is snaking past my desk. The only thing my desk actually uses from that bundle is the ethernet cord coming from outlet in the wall farther offscreen. Oh, and there's another ethernet cord coming back from the 8 port Netgear switch under my desk to PK's tower, which is offscreen to the right. That should explain just about everything.
5) Your can of Pledge must have ran our when you got to the corner of the desk where the remote is sitting. |
| You give me too much credit if you think I own Pledge. You're right though-- I was lazy. I cleaned the main desk surface since the monitors were up at the time, and I got everything else that I could reach (easily), but not where the workbench station is by the remote.
6) 3,4 and 5 (and possibly 2) lead me to believe that the rest of the room doesn't quite live up to the same standard of neatness. Are the barbarians at the gates? |
| You're right, but that's because it's yurei's place, not mine. I'm inherently a neat freak; yurei, to put it mildly, is not. The only reason you can see the floor in fact, is because I live there!
7) looking up 'STC' on google and wikipedia is not giving me interesting insight into where your pencil holder is from. I think that is a black fleur-de-lis under it though. |
| Yes, the context is indeed obscure. Though this won't be intuitive, try googling ST Charles high school il instead. (Here's a cheat link to explain the fleur-de-lis.)
8 ) I would be confused as to what the tube with the coloured things in it next to your powermac, but I have seen those before and will leave it up to someone else. |
| Heh, ask yurei how warm it is in our apartment next time you're playing with him. I'm sure he'll say it isn't a degree over 70!
Ah, that was what I was getting at with my first question. At school I have 3 keyboards, 2 mice and 1 trackpad to manage. Some simplification would be a major help. Thanks!
|
| Great little app. If you're on an unsecured network you'd better encrypt it through SSH though-- otherwise your keystrokes are essentially sent in the clear.

What about the foot fan? In the summer it's either pointing up at me, or (more likely) pointing at my Shuttle to help keep it cool. There is a bit of a "heat bubble" effect underneath the desk and it doesn't circulate air all that well being closed in on 5 of the (roughly) six sides of the cube.

Pep rallies were so terrible back in the day. I don't think I actually went to one after grade 10.
On thing that does bug me slightly about the Dell monitor is that it is very hard to get it to sit exactly level without a lot of fiddling. I can see your one on the right is having that problem.

Yeah the teams were pretty good back in the day. Now that the High School is seperated, they kinda suck.
Sports is a huge deal in the Tri-City area that we live in (St. Charles, Geneva, Batavia) HUGE rivalries, though none of us (GASP!) were that in to the whole sports thing.

There's this guy who did statistics on the web traffic he recieved when an article he wrote got put on digg.com and he has a breakdown of the screen resolution of the people who visited.
http://hrmpf.com/wordpress/44/the-digg-effect
Only 2 out of the 15,000 hits had a screen resolution of 3360x1050
