I was just messing around with The GIMP.

Not quite as powerful with the stock setup, but just as counter-intuitive of an interface.

I've been out of the game for 2,3 years, and I miss it dearly. Work prevents me going to Phillies games, though I do get to watch my team on the country club's plasma.

I like baseball.  Especially the bit when a cornfield commands Kevin Costner to build a stadium.  Mmmmm, Costner.

I have yet to attend a Major League game due to the fact that the closest team from here is Seattle thats a two day drive. We have the AAA Expos affiliate in Edmonton that I go to once in a while, but Nolan Ryan bought the team and they are moving to Texas at the end of the season. Bastard.

I get pretty much every Blue Jays game on TV though.

Baseball just isn't appreciated at all here. The U of A has a team for every other damn sport you could think of, but no baseball.

I love that movie! Costner just doesn't play a very convincing hippie.

I think I need to up the quality of my JPEG when I get home, it looks like ass on this monitor.

Field of Dreams? That's a quality flick.

I feel bad for you Terraji. Your earlier posts implied you have youth leagues up there. If that's infact true, you should try and get an umping gig. It easy, it's at night (might eat in to cs time), pays and it involves baseball what more could you possibly ask for?. A bunch of kids do it near me and they enjoy it. Punching out 7 year olds has to be fun.

ROFL Jb what does that have anything to do with this decussion other then it being very funny. I enjoy baseball the last time i was at a game was when we had skybox seats for the cubs game. Skybox is fun and all but i still think its awhole lot better to be down with the actual fans it makes for a better experience.

I have my umpires certification, and I have done a bunch of that a couple of years, its just that it doesn't pay very much. 15 bucks a game as I remember.

Travelling to hillbilly towns to play double headers on the weekend is where its at. It doesn't get much more fun than striking out scary looking farm boys with my curveball.

For the umping gig, my suggestion wasn't about the money, it was more about the straight up fun you have at baseball games no matter what age/competition level.

As for K'in up hillbillies (right plural?), I wouldn't know as I played second base, though I could only imagine...

How is that suppose to be interperted? As one long sentence or each line independently? Either way it doesn't really make sense.

If you don't like baseball, I can only feel sorry for you. Your missing out. It's one of the few sports that whether your listening on the radio, watching it on tv, or there in person you can enjoy. Baseball is pure magic, which most canadians can't comprehend/appreciate .

i'm actually quite serious. can you think of any other sport where statistics play such an important role in decision making? What type of pitches to throw, whether to walk batters or not, how long to keep pitchers in, its all based off strategy and statistics.

i still prefer football

Both are good points. Anything that can give you an edge (cough steroids cough) including numbers are used to win.
Football also rocks the house, though I prefer baseball.

I played baseball and Softball most of my life untill areally bad elbow injury, broke my elbow and the arm all the way back!  Ouch!  It is a fun sport to play, though not very challenging athletic wise (running, stamina)  but to watch, zzzzzzzzz!  Now a sport like Soccer ( football ) or hockey or basketball besides all the skill and finess you need to be a real athlete (in shape!).

Skip one season of ball I had an 880 average only one out for the season so whatever!

One of the hardest, if not the hardest thing to do in sports is to hit a baseball. Name another sport where your successful 30% and your one of the best in the game? In football if you QB's Completion % was 30, you'd be laughed out of the league. In hockey if your goalie only makes 30% of the saves, you'll never get back between the pipes again. Basketball you shoot 30% from the charity line your awful.

Baseball is all about the drama. It is an idividual sport as well as a team sport. The game is more complex than chess.  For every pitch and every play, every single player on the field has every single gear in his head turning. I think a person has to be involved in the sport on a competitive level to appreciate that aspect of the game fully.

No other sport lets you see the emotions of the players as well as baseball. The concentration is intense, therefore, so are the victories and defeats.

Every play counts even when the defence is leading by a bunch in the bottom of the ninth. They can't just hang back and let the clock run down, they have to throw the best goddamn pitch they can muster or they are gonna get spanked.

As for golf, I understand that alot of people love it and they can put aside entire weekends to watch it. I also appreciate the extreme high difficulty involved in the sport. (it takes me 120 to do 9 holes). The knock I have against it is that the complexity just isnt on the same level as with baseball. In golf, all the excitement comes from watching the scoreboard. It's missing the intesity and conflict of a pitcher-batter duel or tagging a runner out at the plate. That is why its not worth my time as a spectator sport.

He makes some damn good points. There is absolutely nothing like watching a baseball game or playing it. You step in the batter's box, dig in, do what you will with the bat, and then stare the pitcher down. The adrenaline just starts flowing, and what a rush it is. The pitcher lets loose and in that split second you have to decide if its a fastball, curve, slider, how fast its going, and where its going. Then you swing. If its a hit the adrenaline keeps up and your riding high but if you swing through it you sink real low and then the rollercoaster adrenaline ride starts all over again. For me there is nothing like a game of baseball (well except a VH concert).

Good we are talking about baseball. I don't think I have ever had a competent pitcher pitch to me in my entire life and as such I am positive I have a skewed veiw on how easy/difficult it is to hit the ball. At camp I have a hitting average of 1000 or 1.00 or 100% or whatever.

only joking but it is amazing how all these games, baseball, american football and ice hockey (not so much) are mainly played in one country!!

I mean how many teams from any country other that the US have ever competed in the worldseries??

Bring on National 3 - thats where its all at I tell you!!!

It used to be in the UK too but then people realised that designating sports to genders is sexist.  I'm sure you guys will stumble onto equality at some point in the future.

Play what you want, watch what you want, support who you want.  Just don't support France.

Yea i get that adrenaline rush watching the picher walk the hitter after throwing 4 balls.

a 3-0 count is a good count, since out of fear of walking a batter, the pitcher will most often throw a fastball down the middle. The hitter knows this and will be looking to drive it. If the pitcher fails to throw a strike, the batter may swing and miss and look like a fool, or instead walk, which shows that the pitcher is off his game and the offence will try and milk him for more walks.

Its not the action that makes the game good, its the strategy.

One. Canada. but you must understand, at the time of the first world series, the only country in the world playing baseball was the US. Nowadays, the majority players are from asia and south america.

Yeah the Blue Jays beat the Phils in the 93' series. Those bastards.

Table Tennis was being throw around by somepeople. IT'S INSANE. I was watching it on ESPN, during exam week, and all I could say was wow. They get pretty fired up.

Now the true sport of champions is the spelling bee.

Who is this JB character you speak of?  My name is Alfredo Ramirez.

Speaking of the spelling bee.  I've never participated in a real American one but I reckon I'd be pretty damn good.  I've seen Billy Madison at least 4 times so I've corrected most of my mistakes.

I'll agree that you don't have to be an athlete to play softball/baseball, but you are certainly much better at it if you are. Come play 4 games in a tournament on a Saturday sometime and then tell me you don't have to be able to run and have good stamina.

Don't forget that baseball players play nearly everyday for 6  months. Over the course of a season you get bruises, strains, etc... and by constantly playing your body doesn't have a chance to recover as quickly. As an amateur I play between 50 and 75 games over the course of 3 months and I gotta tell you I'm impressed with how guys in their late 30's can do what they do over the course of a season at the professional level.

I was golden gloves at 15 in my home town and my best friend Joey Gamache got the title belt for light weight.  Unfortunately an irishman knocked his Canadian ass out on his first title defense!  But Surg you are right, there is nothing more gruelling than boxing. I gaurantee anybody here in this forum could not go three rounds without gasping for breath and thinking their heart is going to explode.  My first real fight I was so excited and scarred man I was gasping for breath by the end of the first round!

I HATE this argument. Baseball does not reward agility nearly to the same extent as almost every other sport in existance. It is not a game of cardiovascular endurance, but rather of muscle endurance(pitching) and muscle power(sprinting and hitting).

That is why you see players of many different body types. They have many other physical attributes that lend themselves to the sport. To suggest that heavier players aren't athletes is completely absurd. They go throught many, many hours of training  and conditioning for their sport just like any other professional atheletes.

Lots of squats for those large junk in the trunk behinds!  It is definitely a sport just not the most action packed.  I think what bothers me the most is you can be out in the field for a whole inning and not even get a chance to play?  At least soccer or football or basketball it is constant running.  Even if you don't get the ball your presence your position affects others on the opposite team, your contributing.  I once was playing left field, we had such a great pitcher there was barely any hits.  I was daydreaming heard a crack and to my surprise saw a ball coming towards me!  Needless to say  I was lulled into a standing in a pool of drool waiting for action!  It was abase hit, I shook off the brain fart and said to myself my god I got so bored and I am playing a sport?  Too much down time for me, at least other sports you get to run and feel like your part of the game.

we can go back and forth on this all day but I had to respond. In baseball you should be moving most every play backing up infielders or repositioning yourself based on the hitter, the count and how the batter is being pitched. Where you stand in the outfield has an impact on where a hitter will try to put the ball. So all fielders are involved in all plays.
