I completely disagree, I think string theorists will be able to prove their theories in particle experiments in the coming millenium.

well since the average size of a 'string' is 10-33 centimeters...we will probably be able to see that small eventually...i doubt in my lifetime though

String Theory is utterly ridiculous. I think it's entirely possible though. As for the mighty Swordbomb, all I have to say is that Sword + bomb = Swordbomb. Deal with it.

Deal with it, no problem mate! I no w carry an empty sword sheath to keep your sword in after I kill you and bombs just take some spit on the old fingers and a gentle squeezing of the lit fuse! Peeing also works well too!

Hmm. I think there are some physical constraints that make this highly unlikely.

What constraints? If you think about it, why couldnt atoms and electrons and all the space inbetween them all be made up of 'strings'? Back in the day atoms were 'found', I bet they said that they were the smallest things too Then they found protons/neutrons & electrons

Are you guys honestly about to debate physics with Grounded? He might not kick much ass at CS, or cook macaroni particularly well, but he certainly knows his Maths and Physics.

Superstring theory is more in the realm of Cosmology rather than Math or Physics is it not?
It's also fairly controviersial since testing and verifying it's predictions are a little beyond us right now. Maybe a in a few more centuries. It is quite the mindjob to read up on anyway...

Isn't Cosmology a branch of Astrophysics? I was being pretty vague when I tried to big up my brother though. I just think all your intellects pale to his! Mwahahaa! I'm talking my way into some smitage here...

Well, Superstring theory is an attempt to unify general reletivity and quantum mechanics, which has HUGE implications on Astrophysics, which yes, is very much related to Cosmology. Cosmology by the definition I understand it, is the study of models which represent our universe, and Superstring therory would definitely qualify.
Cosmology, Astrophysics, and Superstring theory [i]use[\i] Math and Physics, but in general the definition of Math and Physics are pretty vague. Kind of like the way Accountants use Math, and Civil Engineers use Physics.

Yeah I saw a good show on daytime TV about String Theory. It was this flash professor from over your guys way. He was riffing on General Relativity, Quantum Mechanics, Newton and Einstein. I think the show was for kids but I thought it was pretty engaging.
Dictionary says http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=cosmology.
I may be a layman, and I don't doubt your knowledge for a sec Terraji, but I still think I know my basics.

Heh, I dabbled in political philosophy while in France. I didn't really get it and was seen as the northern heathen who couldn't comprehend the importance of philosophy in the modern world. Needless to say I failed that course quite miserably. The oral exam was particularly gutwrenching.

To finally answer this (I haven't been able to see CSR for a few days due to some DNS hiccup), I wasn't saying that strings are not possible, I'm saying that it's very, very unlikely they will ever be observed or proven to exist by physical experiment. String theorists understand this, of course. This 'unobservability' is why string theory is often lumped in with cosmology/philosophy, since many people believe it can only ever be conjecture.
