Great Server

I'd like to thank Grounded for showing me this server:
They all speak German or some other random language. It is in Germany, so my ping is through the roof even with cable.
Sounds like a great server eh?
Oh wait they play nothing but custom maps. Its also hard to connect to because it almost always full, even durning the day. They do not play any standard maps, what a shame. Again I'd like to thank Grounded.
Link for the map downloads.
EVERYBODY LEAVE CSR, AND PLAY HERE! EVERYBODY LEAVE CSR, AND PLAY HERE! EVERYBODY LEAVE CSR, AND PLAY HERE! EVERYBODY LEAVE CSR, AND PLAY HERE! EVERYBODY LEAVE CSR, AND PLAY HERE! EVERYBODY LEAVE CSR, AND PLAY HERE! EVERYBODY LEAVE CSR, AND PLAY HERE! EVERYBODY LEAVE CSR, AND PLAY HERE! EVERYBODY LEAVE CSR, AND PLAY HERE! EVERYBODY LEAVE CSR, AND PLAY HERE!

np SG
I have no idea how they manage to keep so many regulars when they only play customs but somehow they do. What's even better is the rotation is always changing. Each week they playtest four maps on a Wednesday night (afternoon for US folks) and then afterwards vote on whether or not the new maps make it into the rotation. I played three of the maps in the test last week and de_plaka got voted into the rotation as you may or may not have noticed SG. Sweet Oh make sure you take note of the new IP on the main page cause it's changing some time soon I think.
Of course CSR takes precedence but since I'm in sunny Scotland there's often no one about during the day and the temptation of custom maps is just too great

if they are constantly playtesting new maps, we should send them cs_reloaded once its finished..start getting it circulated throughout cs

I'm forced to agree. You have no idea how much I'd love to be able to say cs_reloaded could only be played here on CSR-- an "exclusive" map, but if you want people to play it they have to download it, and you can't stop the spread after that. Plus the three of you have done such an awesome job with it that I'd rather help get your work out there and have you all get famous for it than horde your skills for CSR's use alone (so to speak).

I'm probably going to have to wait to check the server out until I get home for summer-- my connection is unstable enough just going to the east coast. A german all-custom server sounds like fun though!

This is the server that actually had cs_thinktank_beta in their rotation up until a couple of weeks ago - you'll notice it's in their map downloads archive with all the other previous maps. I guess someone over there browsed onto CSR back in the days of Mapping Contest #1 and downloaded it. If you go to their forum you can probably still find the old thread where they say some nice things in german about it

i played this INSANE custom map last night on unitedgamerz
its a beta, but you switch sides every round (not for T to CT) just spawn location... picture this
one team starts in this giant cannon like thing and all they get is a knife.. it shoots them high into the air into this pond when the round starts (if you miss the pond your dead) the pond has these catapult things that shoot you to the building the other team is in.. and the roof is all glass and there are doors to get in, but the doors only open from the outside.
so the other team is stuck in this building and they all get awps.. so the objective is to kill all the other team with the awp before they fly in and knife you... was kind of crazy and needs more work for balancing, but was pretty fun non the less... not really a map of CSR style.. but was a good time

Well i germans are very different about their computer games. the kids that play games lan all the time. My first german exchange student ran 2 cs servers that him and his friends play at, they were 16 person, but everyone in the school knew about them and other friends so they always had kids playing. So think of it as a huge group of friends server that all like the same bad map.

The only thing I don't like about it is the fact all talk is on. So much random gibberish going its really crazy. Not to bad when you bring along an English speaking buddy though.

I was just playing there. The people talking are great. There was a bunch of german guys singing in a SaintOfSin kind of way. Annoying, but still pretty funny. There was a bunch of UK english people that were coherient, but that still sounds funny to me. (no offence to our resident Europeans)
They seem to have a different system for client downloads going on. It seems to automatically connect you to a different server that has a crazy lot of bandwidth, (< 1 minute for a large map with sounds, and I am on the other side of the world from germany) after the download finishes you have to manually recconnect though.
The maps are ultra high quality, all textured up the wazoo. de_westwood was mind blowing. It's a full spaghetti western town with plenty of rooftops to shoot from. The server is great stuff, but I feel bad going there with a 200 ping.

I hate to bring this up, but the server crashed again while people were downloading/playing de_747. Is the answer to the question about an alternative in game download thingy still, no and I told you so?

I think that advertising servers other than csr in the forums or in game is treason and the player(s) responsible should be shot.

There is still a conflict between the http downloading and hltv to the best of my knowledge, but hltv is non-critical to us right now anyway, so the only concern we have is a ultra-reliable and fast connection. I think Slight is gonna get sick of it real quick if we use his, or anyone else's home connection, and I'd hate to host it too far away from the east coast, much less not on RG to begin with. This is the kind of thing were RG would be well served to host a public download mirror for CS maps, so every customer could add custom maps to ONE directory, and everyone could use it as the http download source for their game servers.
So yeah, to boil all that down: we need a uber-reliable web host with roughly a gig of web space and unlimited monthly bandwidth. I'll help set it up, and generally do whatever I can to support such a venture, but CSR's RG account simply doesn't have that kind of space to spare. Nevertheless, I'll give RG support a call tomorrow and see how cranky they would be if we started using a good deal more web space. It would be best if I could get RG to link the actual maps directory on the game server into our web server. Then we wouldn't have to maintain duplicate directories. I'll investigate...

That's leaving a bit of headroom of course, but we're using about 800MB for our game server right now. (I haven't checked recently, so I could be a little off.)

but that can't be all maps.. if it is then there is something wrong...
that has to be uploads to the server forums and other things... plus the map packs on the server are redundant.. we have many map packs that contain the same maps... on a HTTP download server you need just 1 copy of every map

They all mount up - remember there are like 30 maps if you count all the official ones and recently cut ones like thunder, rotterdam etc.
