Halflife 2 at E3 expo
« on: May 13, 2004, 03:03:46 PM »

Gamespy has an article about the Halflife2 demostration on the E3 expo:
As a demonstration, we were shown a new version of the Counter-Strike "Aztec" map running in the new Source engine. While the texture and models clearly weren't as impressive as in the Half-Life 2 demos, the graphics were miles beyond the current versions, with players causing realistic splashes as they ran through the water. When the shooting started, bullets riddled the river, sending water everywhere. The physics of the Source engine should also add a new dimension to Counter-Strike's gameplay, with simple touches like barrels getting blown up and rolling in every direction when caught in a grenade's explosion. According to Johnson, porting mods to the new engine isn't automatic by any means, but isn't a very complicated procedure, either, and Valve is clearly hoping that a lot of Half-Life mod authors will be compelled to continue their work in the new engine.
|
|
In other words Valve will have CS2 ready when they release HL2 and will be amazing

Valve will probably want to milk HL2 for awhile before they throw CS2 out. I know I would buy CS2 first and maybe never get to HL2 if they were released at the same time.

since steam will be there to deliver the game content, they can load the engine and have you buy whatever games that use the engine that you want..
i just hope they add LOTS of bandwidth before they release either, because otherwise i can see lots of connection problems while everyone is DLing the content.

Valves promises lack credibility, however, it would be in their best interest to make this transition as smooth as possible otherwise they stand to lose many customers.

I don't know about hl2/cs2. I like cs. And i don't like all the changes that are happening. Like 1.6 i did not like, along with this new awp change i've heard about and will test tomorrow. My theory is that cs players don't like things to change all that much, the 1.6 change and jumping change in 1.4 people just haven't liked a big change.. And if cs2's gameplay changes to much it won't be good. I don't really know all the changes that they are going to make. But i hope they dont' ruin the game.

| Just treat cs2 like a new game... There is no point in comparing cs2 to cs because chances are there will be several differences. Your never going to enjoy it until you accept that it will change.

the thing is it's not a new game. It's jsut gona be like cs 1.7, instead it will be 2.0 thats the problem it's not a different game it's the same. I mean changing graphics is one thing. But if they change like damage and stuff like that. Or lots of dif guns, idk. I'm not gona knock it till i try it, but i don't plan on buying it till cs is not played anymore or csr upgrades 2 cs2

The new Aztec level looked fantastic - and just so you know, in the build they showed the Terrorists were using AK47's (lovely new models), and the CT's I dont know (too far away) - but one had a very very nice looking AWP. New bomb looks the bizz too

I agree with biggums. Ive havent been playing cs as long as some people have and i tend to hate these new changes.
When CS2 comes out its going to be new and interesting. But i am going to stick with the old cs as long as possible

What is won?
I don't like the changes they do with cs now where they just toy with something and its different all the time. But seeing as though this is a new engine and all its hard not to warrant the change.

WON as in won-id database. 2417264. My wonid. The reason you buy cs or hl so u can get a cd key to get a won id so u can play on a server WON.

Yeah. WON isn't shut down at all. Load up 1.5 and there are still like 10 thousand servers running. The best are those servers with the 1.3 jumping mod installed.
http://www.redphive.org/?view=redphive_file_display for 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, and halflife files.
And just to clarify, Valve isn't calling CS run on the Source engine "CS2". Multi-player for Half-Life2 *IS* CS updated to run on Source, no serious game changes made. I imagine CS2 *will* have gamplay changes, but they haven't announced anything at all. My bet is that it's coming along just as well as TF2.
Never-the-less, CS on Source looks absolutely amazing.

I saw the video and thought it was awesome...much more "action movie" looking, with great gouts of water and richochets flying when you fire...and Aztec looked sick, truely sick.
Me, I like the changes that have happened to CS. I hate hoppers; even if CS is not marketed as a "simulation shooter", I still feel weird about jumping around corners through the air and getting all John Woo. Sniper rifles too, I've been praying they would fix the "instant scope and fire"syndrome. Personally, I have nothing against AWP, it's just that it's more like a railgun than a RL sniper rifle, with all the weaknesses thereof. Anyway, once I saw CS I dumped Quake2 CTF like it was a fat girlfriend because CS at least made pretensions to realism.
Terraj, did you PLAY HL? To this day it was one of the most cinematic games ever developed, truely involving, with a GOOD backstory (how often do you see that?), with tons of memorable scenes...the tenticle in the pit, the room filling with acid, fighting the giant bollocks, the first time you get the energy weapon, the rapid footsteps of charging assassains...HL is one of the top 10 games of all time, IMHO.

I seriously remember each and every one of those moments....for the exact reasons Ribs said-- this game just does an excellent job telling its story. Not many games can compare to it.

CS2 is not CS1.7 because when CS2 comes out, CS 1.6 will still be there right along side it. They aren't forcing it upon you and you don't have to buy it at all if you don't want to. As for change, its pretty sad that you guys would just want the same thing forever.... valve wrote an entirely new engine to run this game and it is going to be one of the most insane looking games to date. The interaction level they have added with the maps will be a great addition to the game play, not just a bunch of sqaure objects that you run on, around, through, and over... you can actually interact with elements in the map

CS is successful for a reason. When you chip away at the skill separation in the game it angers many people to leaving the game. CS is liked for the game play, not the graphics. With every update a noob gets their wings. If they mess with the gameplay they mess with the reason people play the game.
I'm not suprised when the vast majority of the pub-i crowd (I'm pub-i) wants to see these changes made. As long as they don't mess with the core of the game, they should be OK. Doom will put up a massive challenge and many will leave for that.

Oh of course I did. It's defenetly high on my list. My only point was that one person can only swallow one full priced game at a time and the truth of the matter is that I have gotten way more milage out of CS than HL. After downloading that movie on that link it makes me drool something fierce.

I can•t wait, this is the kind of graphics and visuals I see when playing Vietcong! I miss the running river and bullet sprays when hitting water. Vietcong also has movement visually when running, your gun joggles and you must pull gun up to aim with no crosshair but the actual sight of the gun your carrying. The only reason I play CS is because of the forum style and the amount of servers and you guys of course. I know hard habits are hard to break but trust me it is all a lot more realistic, I wish you had to bring the gun up to aim in our game! We have the ridiculous instant head shots because you can aim while running, not in Vietcong you can always be aiming but you can only walk when doing this! Come on its great news it's like hearing your partner is going for some larger (*)(*)'s! UPGRADE!

HL was a classic and I doubt anyone who played it all the way throught could come up with some serious knocks on it.

deuce.. i will say this only once...
you have NO RIGHT WHATSOEVER to complain about a game being repetitive if you are a CS player, i mean does it get more repetetive than CS??? hell no...
endings of games often overshadow the game itself.. I don't play a game to see its ending, I play a game to play the game. HL was probably the only FPS I went through without cheating, just because I enjoyed it so much

thats where you are wrong fotty..CS is not repetitive, as you face a new challenge each time..there is always someone new to face.
and i play games for their story, too be entertained (one reason why i love mortal kombat..the story is so in depth). the story to HL in my opinion was weak.

If you liked doom, did you play the Serious Sam games? Very doomy, and lots of fun to play cooperatively...WHY DON'T MORE GAMES HAVE CO-OP MODE ANYMORE???
Painkiller too is another brainless shooter that looks absolutely beautiful and plays like doom.
Having one mindless shooter on the PC is fun for that 15 minutes before you go to bed mellow out time. Me, I just play a couple rounds of Condition Zero with all the bots put in jason mode, or I log on as DM to that NWN server I'm on and drop lots of monsters on people I don't like.

for anyone that can't find the file, I am going to rip the HL2 section out of the avi and upload just the CS portion of the video so you guys can get a look.. its worth seeing
the whole movie is like 120+ megs or something so I will shrink it down and upload it (not to here of course) and post a link
