Cs source beta is said to begin on August 5 it will then appear on the games menu, and you can install it if you own, or have a cd key for counter strike: conidition zero, or are a subscriber to the valve cyber cafe program.

"Source" is the new Half-Life 2 rendering engine, isn't it?

Yes, Source is the engine built for HL2 and a whole host of other games (including Vampire: The masquerade) and mods, including CS of course...

Gabe Newell says we get the pre-download on the 16th, HL2 texture packs on the 17th (If you pre-order the game over steam), and CS Beta starts 18th.
But we all know the worst guy for following dates in the whole of Valve is.... *cough* Gabe.

I'd expect the beta is going to be a zoo, despite requiring a cz key/cyber cafe to download. Like 10 people will get it to work and the rest will be like "WTF STEAM SUCKS, I WANT MY CS S!" That's my prediction anyway.

I haven't been interested enough to investigate CS:S at all yet (much less PAY for it), but I did read an interesting review from GotFrag this morning. I think you all might like to check it out:

Here is the scoop. As I help out at a lan center I got the joy of trying this game out early. To me, the game is the same save a few cool things. The physics, are bloody awesome. The rag doll models make it realistic, as in when you kill someone against a wall they slump down and all that jazz. But, it seems like it needs a pretty big rig to get solid FPS. It also seems like they didn't do much damage wise with the weapons. As in, the grenade instead of having hit the ground before exploding will explode in the air, it will also doesn't bounce like it did before. Great changes in my opinion, but with the new physics the grenades need to be made much stronger. Right now people are using grenades to exploit in the only map that there is, De_Dust. When you get hit by a grenade, it pushes you. This is awesome, and adds a lot to the game. But people are using that to get to areas they shouldn't, just like in TFC with Rocket Jumping. And since the grenade doesn't kill you, even if it blows up at your feet, you can get to these areas. Other bugs include the shadow, which is HUGE, as in it travels a few feet in front of the person, so people know when you will be coming around a corner, or from the underpass. Oh yeah, all the nice models from C:Z got put in this game, so if your looking forward to new models and stuff, sorry.
It's just a new flashier, buggier, and full of exploiters version of CS. And you get to play on the most outplayed map! Enjoy!
edit: Eh, that was just a ramble of my thoughts about this game, I didn't spell check it, nor did I grammar check it. I am getting lazy. =P

Woot Woot. This game is unbelievable. I did the video stress test on my radeon 9800 pro 256 mb,P4 3.2 ghz, and 1 gig dual channgel ram with high quality everything, all effects enabled, 16 X AF and 8X AA, at 1024 X 768 and I got an average of 53 fps, and an average of 93 fps without AA and AF on. The game is amazing it's basically just same cs with revamped graphics, and physics. No time must play! My only complaint thus far is that the servers are pretty laggy but im sure they will fix this later in the beta.

Finally got the beta running on a 1.2 Athalon with a ATI Radeon 8500.
Can we say "slide show"? Guess I can put off buying HL2 until I upgrade...in a year. It reminded me of when I tried the demo for Quake 2 on my 486 pc.
The look and sound are awesome, and it's the throwaway touches that are just amazing...there's trash all over that kicks up when disturbed, and the barrells...you can play soccer with them. There are even wrecked cars you can hide in or behind, though they don't stop bullets.
Couldn't comment about gameplay. Everyone was too busy shooting barrels and garbage and teammates to actually play.
And my last note: For some reason, now I can't play Condition Zero in offline mode, it just closes unless I'm connected to the internet. Gotta love a game you pay for and can't play eh? (It's something to do with the beta installation, dunno what yet).

I played it a few days ago. It ran like molasses on my average P4 64mb geforce 2 computer. I averaged between 15-30 fps. All the options were at the lowest setting. It still looked pretty cool (except the models). The interactive enviroments we're cool, rolling tires and barrels looked neat and fun to fool with. The models all looked bad, the guns and the characters. The m4 looked like a total wuss gun and so did the scout, although I am partial to the new usp model. The characters looked kinda comical between their clothes and the way they ran (like they were sitting on the can firing a gun except not on the can). Grenades could be picked up off of dead people, I thought that was cool. Though I didn't check/notice if you could blow them up on the ground. Yeah and the only map so far is dust. It got old after about an hour. I'd play it again but animal hasn't given me his steam password. We were switching on and off between cs on the laptop and cs s on the desktop. Then we went pubbing, good times.

Picking up grenades is something from Condition Zero.
One other note, they decided to remove the shield from CS:S.
