cs/steam has been removed from my harddrive. i dont know if ill reinstall or not. the sole reason i kept it was for cs at CSR and htis place is really nothing but a morgue now. l8r all.

i remember when i met HH for the first time, at a lan party at tyler ellis' basement, when i was a hardcore newb (gotenjc days) and he showed me what custom skins and maps were, it was awesome.

Yeah, I'm on my way out. Like HH, I really only played here and really only want to play here. Most other places either the admins are jokes or the players won't even try to work as a team and complete the objectives. So unless CSR has some sort of ressurgance I doubt I'll be playing much.

That truly would be a shame.
I'm curious though, does anybody have any ideas about why it's been so dead? I'm not talking about stuff like, "cause we don't have the awp of course!" I mean significant reasons beyond those same old arguments we've always had. Is it our set of plugins? FF off? No clanmod? The server's name?? What exactly is causing the random player from connecting to CSR like they used to? Even without regulars, the server used to hold 10 random people almost every night, but no more. Is it just that CS is finally reaching the end of it's lifetime? Am I just running things that poorly? Are our admins banning every player that joins?
I'm open to any and all ideas that could lead either to an explanation, or to some type of resolution, to the lack of player population (regulars and otherwise).

It is things beyond your control I'm pretty sure.
Most people don't look for static pub servesr anymore, they just choose one randomly whenever they feel like pubbing. People are also more aware of the competitive world that gets us out of pubbing. New types of servers probably hurt as well, deathmatch servers and w3 mod servers.
Also the map rotation tends to hurt sometimes.
Other than that the only explanation is CS is getting an older game every day and less and less people are playing I believe, although i have no proof to back this up.

For me personally, this game is reaching the end of the line. I haven't been playing that long compared to some people (I picked it up in 1.5 about a year and a half ago) but it's just not fun anymore. My guitar is much more enjoyable.
When I am playing counter strike I find that on the rare occasion CSR has people on it, that everybody plays too seriously. I remember when I first started playing here, people would talk and joke around a lot more and in general would have more fun. It didn't really matter what map we were on or how good/bad you were playing; it was about the people. It seems that we slowly lost that great community feeling we had. Now I don't think we can contribute it to a person or something as trivial as a server setting. I believe the game just started to lose its appeal or other things came in the way of people playing here. Slowly we lost most of our members and now are left with very few. I'm suprised that we never really gained any over the period, only subtracted.
Now whether the next two questions are rhetorical or not, I'm going to answer them.
No, you're doing a great job porter. You fufill people's requests and you can't ask for more than that.
I hardly ban anyone. I try to set a good example and give them a fair number of warning assuming its nothing praticularly bad.
I have nothing to offer that would lead to a decent explanation of why random people don't join more often. I also don't having anything to offer in terms of a resolution.
I apologize for my somewhat disorderly post. In conclusion, I will play this game more often if Animal Sex ever gets his computer back.

I think the number one reason you dont get consistent players on CSR is the fact that HLstats (I think) is trying to figure out where every bullet is going and tyring to record stats as the shots are fired...this causes 40% of shots not to register...thats 40% too much for most players....maybe hlstats can record at the end of the round, or maybe im wrong and it does....either way shots dont register for *poo*...but thats just my two cents

usually when im on another server i could careless about my stats on there website.... I only care about what im doing at that point in the game.

I don't think he's talking about checking his stats, but rather a lack of bullet recognition due to stats. Two totally different things.
Now obviously he doesn't have anything to back up this claim, nor do I, but whether this problem is real or just percieved, I know there have been times when I could have SWORN I hit someone. Then only to have it tell me I did 0 damage and I'm going to like it.
How much of an effect on server population does this "issue" have? I don't know, but I recall other players (biggums for sure) complaining about this in the past. So either CS plays mind games or we have stumbled upon a left wing conspiracy involving bullet recognition and manila folders....

A few weeks ago, I would have guessed that I would be spending more time on the server in the weeks to come. As I have found out, that is far from the case as I have been putting a crazy amount of hours into my schoolwork. I personally, still have my heart into CS, and I regret being one of the absent ones when this server looks like it is dying.
I myself have a small budget for a hardware upgrade and HL2 and hopefully I will be able to pick it up before christmas.
Even if the server remains empty for days on end, I think it is safe to say that the forums are not going anywhere.

I don't really know why so few people play these days. Perhaps our general CSR age is increasing and we have other commitments. There are also so many communities and clans these days that you really have to be doing something radical to attract new people. All everyone cares about are winning leagues and getting sponsorship and playing as if CS is more than a passtime.
I'm pretty fed up of people moaning about how dead the server is. If you really only want to play on CSR then join the server, spam message all your friends and get a wee game going. It usually builds up. If it doesn't that's just hard lines. Don't scream bloody murder or have a nervous breakdown.

In the past couple of weeks there have only been 2 occasions when I've joined an empty (or nearly empty) CSR and failed to get a game going. And one of those was mid-afternoon so it doesn't really count.

I joined with eni last night for a solid 30 min I belive and no one joined. Usually when I do come on cs I have limited time SO i usually want to play and not sit in a server and try to kickstart its heart. Considering there was a time when I would sit on the computer for 10 min waiting for people to leave, and or asking grail or someone like that to kick someone so i could get on.

The other day you guys had about 5 on my server at once. So I'm sure if you guys just pick a couple other favorite servers, and when you see x amount on, if you switch to CSR, you can get a good game going. Since I havn't played on CSR in a long time, I can't really offer any more suggestions. But if you are an admin, and on the empty server, change the map to dust or something. It may suck as a map, but its usually a map that gets people on.

Yeah, dust/dust2/aztec do work. You can also try some custom maps, like scoutzknivez, leetskeet, poolday, iceworld. The customs are kinda hit and miss though.

Getting other people to join is entirely hit or miss. I sat in the server on dust doing homework, I then switched it to scoutzknivez. I gave up after 45 minutes.
Also when you do get people, admin_vote_maps are a must unless you've discussed it and a consensus has been reached.

My dad and I started one on train last night and it didn't take long to get up to about 7 people. There are a few loyal server regs who haven't registered on the forums who often pitch up at random.

Yeah Skip I'm usually on earlier due to the GMT business. 9:30pm EST is 2:30am GMT and I'm no late-night CS heavyweight  Plus the comp is in JB's room so if he's asleep then there's no CS to be had...
I assume you can only play those times because of work or something?

Certainly never this bad. People were calling four v four games dead. The server having ZERO people in it for days on end is dead.

Train was a popular map last night. Since CAL changed their match reporting to anytime from tuesday to thursday you will now see the map of the week being played heavily on wednesdays. This week will be D2, so expect to see that map being very popular as people try strats, practice where to shoot though walls and also getting the nade timing down.

If someone like biggums were to type that, you'd see a message comes across the screen being like, "this is your warning biggums."
On top of this Doom3, CS: source, and continued growth of leagues and call me crazy but I remember a time when people repeatedly said that csr isn't about being a popular server. Well, why the surprise now?

I think there's a difference between being surprised that CSR's not 'popular' (which I'm not) and surprised that CSR's completely empty (which I am).

Yeah, I'm usually out of work by 5 or so but by the time I get dinner, walk the dog, etc. it's usually 8pm est or later. Plus some nights I've still got softball.

I think this server has an idenity crisis. It doesn't know if it wants to play custom maps or standard maps.
