key to cs

Sounds - not just any sound will do, cheap sound cards, crappy headsets etc. will pwn you and you will suffer for it. There are very good sound cards out there, and extremly sexy(awesome) headsets. Headsets allow you to hear footsteps or of which mine allow me to faintly hear walking.
my rigged headset at bottom. I use to headsets 1 for amazing sound quality and one for a Mic.
Guns- With the current updates there are many things you can do in the line of configuration. cl_lw 1 (default) or 0 0 makes you shoot slower but it is indeed more accurate i dislike 0 for my own reasons
usp- the updates had make this gun amazing. its fast speeds and crazy accuracy makes this one of the best pistols in the game. Deagle- most powerful handgun out there. but becareful and make sure you take your shots carefully. it maybe quite powerful but it only holds 7 bullets. (my fav gun)

"Plantronics audio 90" or "Sennheisers 155" headphones are the way to go.
A good mouse pad is also good. I have a func pad. I believe you can get one for 15$ or so.
There are tons of good pads out there though, they're just more reliable than the 2$ bullshit you can buy at radio-shack.
Then it's all about smarts and aim .

im pretty sure cl_lw doesnt make your guns more accurate...it slows down your guns fire rate, only on the client side, so you can see your bullets hit -including lag as a factor...this only makes it look like you're firing more accurate, when in reality its the same. It also turns off client side bullet holes and other random animations/decals.

eh. ok..
amazingly enough, my $20 logitech headset does the same thing as $100 headsets..
and also amazingly enough, my wooden desk table makes a rather nice mousepad as well.

|
| well i also tweaked my CS config and its llegal for cal
as for a wooden desk I also use it as a mouse pad. but in some cases it can create small mouse lag
20 dollar headsets SOMETIMES could be extremely well i once had a 2dollar headset that made me beable to hear people from cat walk if i was in B planting... it was crazy really hard 2 judge people with them though

Surely that means that when you shoot your gun or there is a lot of close combat then you practically go deaf from the noise?! Or can you scale it somehow, so that quiet noises are louder and loud noises are quieter?

People used to swap the sound files for the gun noises around. For example, if you made a copy of the M4 firing noise and renamed it as the sounds for the silenced M4, then whenever someone shot a silenced M4 in-game it would sound like it was unsilenced, making it very easy to detect people who were trying to use stealth.
Though I can understand the appeal of being able to change the sounds like this (simply for personal preference's sake) I always considered it slightly over the line. I don't know if you can still do anything like this with Steam, but I certainly am curious to know what mints means by:
well i also tweaked my CS config and its llegal for cal

Yeah thats the line that interested me too - it seems a bit unfair that an advantage can be gained like that. I mean tweaking your connection setting to get a smooth update is one thing, or even tweaking controls with binds, but tweaking the actual files and sounds seems a bit over the top to be fair. Especially as I've probably done myself some longterm damage playing cs with the sound right up!

hearing people walk is clearly cheating lol
people might be interested in this though, but switching to nades does make sound (although its almost impossible to hear in the middle of the action, or pretty much anytime...)
i cant hear it unless im concentrating on listening to that, and then again if the guy shoots while i try to listen to that sound my ears burst in flames lol .
changing sounds sounds like the gayest thing that ive ever heard... :/...
i did change my config a bit, but nothing that affects gameplay lol...
skins are also gay considering you can have completly white ones and stuff. really gay.
ex_interp remains the gayest command ever its not in source weee

its not cheating. its all config, llegal in cal. turn up your "footstep volume" only way it is impossible to hear people is if they turn the footsteps OFF in a server (mod)
as for the skins. i dont do it. Nade switching does make a sound, as does any gun switch or knife switch, nightvision,

I've fooled with the ex_interp command.
From what I've heard (and I'm probably wrong) and what I've observed from fooling with it, setting it to .1? or is .01? I don't remember but one of them made it more choppy and apparently it makes the game display where characters are more accurately. And the other setting smoothes things out but doesn't display the location of characters as accurately? In fact, you should probably just let zool tell you.

eh.. i think if you have to edit game files in order to cheat and listen to footsteps, thats getting pretty high on the pathetic level.

Heh... did you know nades make different sounds too? A flash when bounced off a wall goes ting, the smoke and HE go ping. Hard to explain, but get some nades, throw them off a wall (or a head, same noise) and listen. Makes it easier to know when to run or when to turn.
Also, if you want to see something funny, throw a Flash, smoke, flash in quick order, then rush. Its funny to watch in third person.

There was a bit of a bru-ha-ha over ex_interp when I used to play a lot in the 56k circles in the UK because all of those guys think they are pros being held back by bandwidth. Apparently interp shifts hitboxes around so, when tweaked effectively, you can compensate for your ping and see opponents from the servers perspective. Meaning it appears like you shoot people around walls, corners etc. I've never tried the thing I just hear this is what it does.
I also think sounds are key to CS - this is why i get by on a crappy gfx card because I have a decent sound card and heavy duty headphones. But for me sounds are just another thing which add to the real key to CS. Timing. Much like comedy and crossing the road. Grounded would be as good as anyone on that server but he has his sound so low he can't hear anything. He fears eardrum damage and is scared of noise. He also sleeps in a hyperbaric chamber, underwater like the Daredevil.
