I always have problems with steam and friends. Friends never wants to work because of maintenance which can get rather annoying at times!!

Steam once replaced my friends list. Then it came back one day.
Try deleting the clientregsitry.blob or something like that in your steam folder and restarting it.

As far as I know, Steam friends list has always been "sketchy" at best. The system is unreliable even when it is "working". I've tried to join games that friends are on before, and it redirects me to a server with a different port (apparently, it has trouble with port specifications sometimes ).
Anyway, as far as I know, much like the current AIM settings though, your "buddy list" is not stored anywhere on your client side machine, but rather on the steam's server(s) somewhere. The idea is that if you log on with your account on some other machine, your friends list will still be there I believe...whatever, I'd rather it just work.

Could it be that the server was full and they had an admin/amx mod plugin that redirected you to another server? I know such plugins exist, but I don't know if it applies.
