Compiling and running a map

I just installed the 3.4 version of the Valve Hammer Editor, and used the Zoner tools for compiling.

When I run a map, it creates the bsp file and everything, but the game cant find the map. When I load it directly from CS, (by plonking it in the map directory) the game crashes as the map opens.

The map Im using is a test map. And Im using the CS1.5 installation's wad files etc, and reference the hl.exe from 1.5 too.

Any ideas, if not, could someone show me what configs they have in the Hammer Editor's config screen, just so I can check...

well...at first you could check for errors like placing the start location in walls.
Regarding the game not being able to locate your .bsp file I've had the same problem, but I can't remember how I solved it - though you could try and change the map in the console inside the game - though I'm not sure if it works...

Just a question: I know hammer and worldcraft can both be used for dod and cs, but ain't there more specifications for cs in worldcraft??

Download Nemesis' Batch Compiler and use the wadinclude options to build the textures into the bsp. It's also a lot nicer than the inbuilt WC compiler frontend.

hey grounded, I dunno how much time you got on your hands, but I think it would be pretty cool if between the three of you (slight, grounded, and deuce) each one of you could produce your own "mapping tutorial".  Cause deuce sent me to a tutorial, and though it lets me make a neato little box map, I'm using Valve's Hammer, I can't seem to do nearly what I want with it, nor do I understand sizing etc.  Anyway, I just think it would be helpful

I would, if I had time, but there are already plenty of comprehensive online tutorials that will guide you through the basics. Try these sites on:

http://collective.valve-erc.com
http://countermap.counter-strike.net
http://www.vlatitude.com/
http://www.karljones.com/halflife/almanac.asp
http://www.halflifemapping.com/

HalfLifeMapping.com has a tutorials section which contains a tutorial series called 'The Project' which goes through the entire process for beginners

I finally figured out what it was, which is excellent. It was a dodgy setting in the advanced compile option screen. I can run the maps now.

Thanks for your help guys.
