Wow.... step by step huh?
I think you would probably be better off learning some of the mapping basics on your own, and from there we can give you some pointers on creating a map. I would start out at [ur]countermap.counter-strike.net[/url] , or http://www.forumplanet.com/counterstrike/topic.asp?fid=4965&tid=927248 . From there we can guide you with any problems you encounter.

Just a question, what program do you suggest that I should use to make custom textures?
Thanks

first off, to convert the textures to a usable format for map making (.wad), use Wally
for making the textures, you can try to use Wally's built in paint program. if you can afford it (or can steal it) use Adobe Photoshop to make the textures. it is 100 times (maybe 200) better then wally for making textures.

To me, this questions seems like asking "How do I do Taekwon-Do", "How do I program?", "How do you fly a plane?" or "How do you make sweet sweet love to a woman and leave her weak with pleasure (a skill that does not come to others as easily as it does to me)"

You'll find that most mappers don't learn to create custom tex until they've been mapping for some time. I made 3 or 4 full size maps before I started making custom tex. Generally you'll find that trying to make custom textures from the off slows you down a huge amount. Try making a simple map to begin with, something you can compile and run around in to get the feel of things.

I think I have to agree with Kaoz this time-- mapping seems to be a real art. I tried it a while ago, and even being the very computer/programming savvy person I am, I failed miserably. I eventually got a big box built, made a spawn point (that ended up dropping me so far I took damage), but entirely forgot to put any lights in. When I loaded the map, I couldn't even tell if it had worked-- it was just pitch black. My next attempt to add more "rooms" to the map was an equal disaster. The way "brushes" work made absolutely NO sense to me, and I just couldn't wrap my head around it. I think you just have to have the knack for it.

I have to agree. Mapping is part architecture, part design, part photo editing, part improvisation, part geometry, part programming, and part guesswork.
Asking someone to tell them how to make a map is like me asking Totyta to tell me how to make a car.

I think kaoz is trying to tell us that there is no a right answer for a kind of question like that. Perhaps before start the complicated process of learning a new knowledge the first step to take is to think about the correct questions in order to get the correct answer. Sometimes the Question itself is harder to find than the answer or the answer comes inmediatly after the question is made it.

Sorry, but after dealing with autoCAD, I find these mapping programs to be weak, in accurate, and lacking in what you can do with them... I'm still working on it though...

its not really the programs that are weak, but rather the half life engine. even if you are using a top of the line computer..a map with high poly count will not run well on it. thus more emphasis is on textures to give more detail rather then more objects (office i think is a good example of this)

I'm interested to know what is inaccurate about them and what exactly you think you should be able to do with them! I don't see how mapping progs bear any relation to autoCad.

I'm not even getting into textures...I can't even alter the brushes to get plane blocks to match up together, I hear you guys talking about height and width of things, but I can't even get them to line up...I needs like a "snap" function...I AutoCAD, I can get it to automatically select the midpoint of a line, or a tangent to a circle, the endpoint, midpoint, quadrent, tangent, perpendicular, apparent intersection, etc. Not to mention, that I hit the compile button, and have no clue whether it has actually worked or not. No error messages or anything, maybe I'm just stupid, but I haven't seen one website that addresses simple things like adjusting brushes to get the be shaped right....
I tried to make what I call a pretty "simple" map(s). I got just a simple box, with stairs (that weren't sized right and you had to jump up to get on them), and bomb site at the top of the stairs. I put in a small "pond" on the ground level to play with water a bit. That worked, and compiled, so I wanted to try a small "cross". I never got it to compile. I also never got the idea of putting the X decal for the bomb site to show. Couldn't find one website on how to fix that either.
I should mention that I think someone writing tutorials about map making would be good, but I also realize I haven't the slightest clue what kind of questions to ask...

If you're using Worldcraft then it's Map -> Show Grid and then Map -> Snap to Grid. The [ and ] buttons increase and decrease the grid unit size. Hope that helps

Btw I'd be happy to make you a simple example map to compile/run around in/pick apart

Tenshi, there are website's up the wazoo with Half-Life mapping tutorials, and Worldcraft (sorry, HAMMER) actually comes with a pretty good help file. Leaks, invalid solid structures, compile problems, decals, brush manipulation, entity usage and lighting options are all covered in detail, if you know where to look. Check out collective.valve-erc.com, or countermap.counter-strike.net for some of the most comprehensive tutorials.
