New de_maps...

Ok guys I•m helping deuce get started on some new maps that me and tenshi want him to work on. Its going to be based on our old high school. So right now I•m going to be working on the basic layout for this map, since our school is so huge it will take at least two-three different maps to be able to cover the whole thing. This is going to be mainly De_ maps so yuna, porter, and Pk when you see this put in some ideas that come in your head if you wish. I am also well aware that this probably will take longer then cs_reloaded to make. So wish us luck!!

Though i think a map of STCHS would be a very neat and interesting, I think we have to be very real and very careful about "limiting the playing field" and chosing what to include and what not to include. Two or Three maps is awfully zealous, and though I applaud the idea, and I think we should start one at a time if people want to do this. One map alone could take well over a year or more as we've seen how long a collaboration project like cs_reloaded took.
As of right now, the hardest part is getting some sort of floor plan laid out. I'd be interested to see what kind of response we'd get if we just tried to walk around STCHS as it is. Take some pictures and see what we get. I also wonder if there is some sort of floor plan pre-renovation that actually has the layout of the things we all knew and love. I don't see why something like that wouldn't be released to us now days...not like we can bomb a school that doesn't exist Anyway, if we are going to start, that's the place to start I guess. Narrowing it down, and getting a basic floor plan.

Could they not do the ground work, like layout, now - and then make it into a CS:S map? Wouldn't that be the best thing - or is CS:S going to be totally different to map in?

That was actually one of the things Valve worked hard on. I know I've read that they purposefully made tools to make moving from Steam to Source a [relatively] easy affair. A lot of teams have time and projects committed to HL1-based mods right now, and they won't want to replicate all their effort to port the mod to Source. This is an important selling point for HL2. Even if they haven't done a single thing right since Steam, Valve DOES value the mod community a TON, and they listen to their needs. I point to the VERC as my primary example.
Anyway, I'm fairly certain you won't get left behind if you start this as a Steam:CS project now and plan to transition to CS:S later, but it wouldn't hurt to research it some more.

I also think that it would be wise to focus on a single map for now until you realize what you've gotten yourself into. As for recreating the school WE knew, I don't know how possible that will be. I haven't been in there since the day we graduated, and I only have vague memories of what it was like while I was there. yurei and I do have a somewhat decent image collection though, that might be a first source for textures and references, but it won't be NEARLY enough to get the job done. I think you're going to have to model it after the school as it is now, and try to incorporate elements from our time there afterwards.
If you plan on touring the school, do NOT mention anything to do with "Counter-Strike". However harmless our intent may be, I doubt public schools (or the police) would be as sympathetic. ANYTHING that involves terrorists needs to be avoided if you want to stand any chance of getting in there. Of course, that's just my opinion, but I'm gonna bring my digital camera and laugh a lot when I come to bail you guys out from the STCPD.

that being said, i DID do what you mentioned above last summer.. got a nice map of my high school by lieing and saying it was for a special project that i was working on for the school's imaging lab.

lol - I don't think anyone in charge at my old school would know what CS is! I doubt anyone would remember me now anyway - certainly most of the teachers that had a good opinion of me have gone now, but there weren't too many of them in the first place!

It shouldn't be terribly difficult to get ahold of a current map as frosh get lost all the time and visitors need to know how to get around. Though you obvioulsy want the old version. I'm sure you if you gave some allumni bs you might get somewhere. I like your idea and the best of luck because me and my friend were going to make a map of my work place. Would have been a riot to bomb the Hobart or the bar.
As for CS S, I personally don't really feel like upgrading my comp to get more than 20 fps. I'm going to be playing cs for quite some time.

Well, seeing as I went to STC(E)HS I'll put in my two bits:
I would say go for a de_ map with the Commons and the Library as your two bombing locations. That gives you a two floor scenario with the sites in fairly close proximity to each other (kind of like nuke). (I would say save the Dunham wing and Norris for other projects.) I've got a fairly good recollection of how things were laid out (seeing as it's been less time since I've graduated than Yu'rei, Porter, or Tenshi) but I'm not sure how I'd be able to help you guys unless I literally drew something out for you guys (which would take time that I really don't have right now). I'll try to keep it in mind and see if I can't come up with anything else for you guys.

Hey, I love the idea, I remember Porter and I tossing around this idea a while back as a Quake map or something. Ive laid out a general map while Yuna is looking, were going to refine it tonight. I already got a satelite pic of the school from 99, so that helped a bit.

We scanned them from one of our old school handbooks.
The school has been heavily renovated since we all graduated-- these plans are no longer accurate anyway, so there isn't much harm in using them.

I don't know if you've ever been to high school, but Frosh get scared and lost all the time so maps are free flowing. In the agenda/planner they give out at the begining of the year, it contains the floor plans for all the schools in our district. Why they roll that way I can't tell you.

There were 760 in my graduating class. That makes the population around 3000 (counting all 4 classes) without including the teachers and other staff. It was a huge mess trying to squeeze all those people into hallways during the five minute passing periods between each class. That is also the reason there are now 2 high schools instead of just the one.

Okay, this project had a very nice start, but I'm kind of stuck in terms of what we need to give you next Deuce. Do you need much more other textures? What gameplay questions do you have for us at this point? Is your head still spinning from the vastness that is our school? Just trying to keep things rolling...
