"You choose" night
« on: January 21, 2005, 04:33:33 PM »

Eni suggested it, which makes it even more amazing that it's actually going to happen Whether we get a turn-out or not has yet to be seen, but you have to go there to come back right?
Ok so sometime next week - Thursday, Friday or Saturday I guess whichever is most convenient - we'll have a test run where we play 3 maps of Eni's choice, since he suggested it. The maps can be anything as long as they're not currently in the official pool and will run without crashing the server. Preferrably there should be some variety too - no one wants to play 3 knife maps consecutively, especially if they suck at knifing (*cough* me *cough*).
If this works out then we'll do the same thing the next week with someone else's 3 map picks and so on.
So now all that remains is for Eni to post a list of 3 maps, with download links if he has them Once the maps are picked I'll add them to the server and the fast download, then make a news post a few days in advance.

Maybe we should move this to the Events board (or the News board for that matter), so it gets a little more traffic?

Fair enough. Just tossing the idea out there.
I'd love to play-- I'd be at every event we had if time permitted, but this time I can't even use a lack of free time as an excuse. This stupid school's connection is atrocious. Just to see if I could eek by, I set my rate to 3000, my cl_cmdrate to 15, and my cl_updaterate to 20 last night. I still got 70 percent packet loss and 30 choke! All the stupid college kids downloading pr0n! For the love of god, I wish I could line them all up and b**** slap every single one of them.

Yeah, but if people don't know you're planning it, they're not even going to consider giving input.
I still suggest make a post on the newsboard with a link to this thread.

Yeah. Obviously enialator still has first dibs on maps, but if he doesn't come up with anything we have at least one backup plan. All the maps are already on the server. Do you still need links?

I added those three maps to fast download. as_highrise is a bit weird - it has a bunch of wads it seems to require but that aren't actually required at all.
Incidentally I also added de_winterdust, de_winternuke and de_remains while I was at it. The first two speak for themselves but I've seen lots of servers playing de_remains so I thought it was worth a go. It's one of the weirdest looking maps I've ever seen...but who knows, maybe it plays well.

This is awsome GUYS! I just got an extra return for my Pay Pal donation! I think you should give at least ten or so regulars the same chance even if very few come around for my FIRST one! Though I must say I am very thankful for the response and try from just a little input I gave!
First I want to give till the end of the day what day would be the best for everybody so please respond quickly folks! I will give the maps by 4:50 today but am waiting in anticipation for what day would be the best for this GRAND EVENT!
Surgeon events was a good idea mate!

I can wing it any night, though I really shouldn't Sunday night.
I've played winteraztec, but not the other ones. I recall getting accused of hacking on it, which is why I probably remember playing it.

Yeah, one of those.
Actually, now that I think of it, I have played remains. It's a pretty poor layout. You run into the other team in about 4-5 seconds no matter which way you go. Way to small for a decent sized game.
Edit: Winterdust. Cannot open as_tundra.wad. Tundra isn't offical anymore, probably why I don't have it?

winterdust is purely a visual change I think, but winternuke has lots of layout alterations. I've added a res file for wdust and put the tundra wad on fast download.
Any night is good for me

If I get three maps then Enialator would like to start with Grnded new one or final version of Remy first, followed by Batman shoties and pistols only, final map Rust knives and nades only to finish with a pure rush! Preliminary and to see if this is possible, thanks guys! Start with the pure, wind down to a little Kaos and end it with pure primative with knives and a crazy tune!

Remy final isn't done yet but then only hardcore mapper types are likely to notice much of a difference from the prefinal when I do finally finish it I assume by batman you mean de_batcave, and yes pistols and shotties only is possible. Knives only probably isn't possible on rust without redoing the map since people are automatically given pistols when they spawn.

How long is this expected to run? Within an hour?
If it's more than 20 minutes for each (except your map because that's actually fun), I doubt I could stomach those restrictions. As I'm personally not a big fan of shotguns and knives only or just knives. It takes all the fun out of using those weapons, and doing that for 40-50 minutes would be repetitive and quite frankly boring. But hey, rock which ever way you want.

Yeah I was thinking that we should keep them short and sweet i.e. not the standard length of the rotation maps (which is a bit too long I think).

Ok short and sweet lets go with 4 maps at 15 minutes each to make an hour! Eni will request Thursday night in the spirit to ge tmore people on the server! Friday Saturday or Sunday you now are almost certain to see somebody on! So lets do this we start out with Rust and we explain to people knives only, we then go to batcave with no restrictions, followed by the two ships next to eachother and finish big with Remy! Sound cool! Let me know, Eni

Skip, since you must have played it before, why don't you just zip it up and email it to Grounded? I can't imagine the map is very big. if it's a glock map.
EDIT : I'm going to go out on a limb and assume the map you wanted was aim_glockrox because in which case it can be found here.

solidarity
A union of interests, purposes, or sympathies among members of a group; fellowship of responsibilities and interests: •A downtrodden class... will never be able to make an effective protest until it achieves solidarity• (H.G. Wells).

To be fair, its easier than you think. In fact, open up this thread in IE....it's okay, I'll wait. I dare you to click here. Did you click?
For reference, this is a Proof of Concept of a recent exploit in IE that can launch any program it wants to on your computer, including anything it has the browser download for itself. (PC World article here.) The PoC simply launches a command prompt, and then closes IE automatically. If clicking on a link in IE can bring up a command prompt, then hackers can start Telnet services, format your hard drive, or send any amount of data they want back to the author.
Now how would you know whether the link you're going to click on is innocent or not? In fact, how would you even know if the link you JUST clicked on didn't just start a hidden process on your computer tracking every key you type or scanning for credit card info?
Just for the sake of argument, here are some more links, you tell me which one is going to delete everything in your My Documents folder: link 1, link 2, link 3, link 4, link 5. (I recommend IE users click on link 5: it will take you to the Microsoft security bulletin for this exploit which contains a downloadable patch. And no, I'm not tricking you this time.)

Ok so I started using Firefox yesterday! Do I need to do anything from a settings standpoint or is it more secure right out of the box than IE?

It's more secure out of the box. The whole reason IE is insecure is because Microsoft thought it would be cool to integrate the browser right into the Windows OS. While this does let you do lots of nifty stuff in an IE window (such as opening Word documents right in the browser window), it also means that every critical component of the operating system (remember the OS is the software that makes your computer RUN!) is vulnerable to attack.
Even this wouldn't be so much of a problem if Microsoft was in the habit of writing secure code, but the problem is that IE and Windows are both hideously ugly jumbles of legacy code that has been added to, upgraded, hacked, and combined for over a decade. Plus, these two pieces of software have hundreds of thousands of lines of code which in turn access hundreds of different system libraries (which have also been added to, upgraded, hacked and combined for over a decade)-- any of which might contain a flaw that a hacker can exploit.
Anyway, because a "normal" browser like Firefox doesn't have all these extra hooks into Windows, it means there's are far fewer ways to break into the system itself. The program is designed to browse the net, and that's it. That's not to say that you can't still be tricked by a phishing scam or download something you shouldn't, but Firefox makes every effort to make sure that YOU are the one that's allowing something in, and not holes in the software itself.
That last point is an important one: it doesn't matter how secure your software is, if you THE USER don't follow safe computing practices, you're doomed no matter what. Education is the single most important aspect in protecting yourself and your computer. ...using good tools (like Firefox) is a close second.

I agree with deuce, that unless you lack all common sense, it's pretty hard to get loaded with spyware. My parents are totally computer illiterate, and the computer they use is completely fine. They know better to click on that stupid bonzi buddy ad (not that they'd even want to, but still).
Since Firefox is becoming more common place, I imagine we'll begin to see people finding security flaws in this program. Not to the extend of IE, but they will emerge.
