epoly what?

i'm starting on a new map (one hint on what its about: nightvision ), and while testing out VIS and all that crap, i noticed i have 3000 epoly (and around 80 wpoly on average).
then i thought: "..huh..high epoly. wait..was is...epoly..?"
what is epoly, what effects epoly, how can i lower epoly?
otherwise..in a realistic scenerio way..this map is coming along great..i doubt it will be a big hit though..it introduces a new aspect that i have yet to seen.

one thing to take into account, with many systems, NV Halves your frames per second.

Reply from my brother Grounded who can't login to the website:
wpoly, as you probably know, is the polygon contribution from world brushes. epoly is the polygon contribution from models including the gun in your hand, the shells that fly out of the gun, model trees/shrubs etc. There are guides to on recommended levels of epoly but if you didn't put any models in your map then ALL of the epoly is from the gun you're carrying. Try switching weapons to knife etc - you'll see the epoly count change as you do.
