Help me pleASE

this has not been my weekend for compuiters.
first my main machin shit the bed it wont boot beeps once then a long beep then shuts off screen remains blank. i have determined thats its not vidio card related but that is all its an amd xp-2200 with xp
but right now i have my backup machine out of retirement and i was playing around with cs vid settings so i tried d3d instead of open gl to see if its better (this machine can only get half the fps of the other machine (even with the better vid card out of that caomp))
butt anyway now cs wont even start steam opens ok but i click on cs in the games menu the cs screen flashes for a second then nothing back to desk top, so where do i change the settengs back to open gl manually.

Brendan's 3 r's. Retry, Reboot, Reformat. I'll and one to that. Reinstall. Other then that cs like most games are very cpu/ram dependent regardless of vid card. Like on my parents p4 1.5 with sdram I got 80-100 fps on a geforce 2. Now, with my comp 2500 barton xp with 512 pc2700 ddr I get 180-300 with the same geforce 2.

Could mean BIG trouble though if it isn't going through a memory check, and/or intializing your bios. That's usually pretty jack job.
I might recommend trying a sbootmgr.dsk unix file, it'll allow you try and boot things easier, and has helped me at least "see" what my computer is trying to do when it boots, or fails to boot.
You'll need a small piece of software called rawwrite for windows, to make a floppy of the image, but it is pretty solid software.
ummm...i think these links should work for what i've mentioned above.
http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/rawwrite.htm http://fresh.t-systems-sfr.com/linux/slackware/rootdisks/.warix/sbootmgr.dsk.html
Hope that helps you boot SOMETHING.

The series of beebs is there to tell you what the problem is if the system doesn't POST. What is the name/model of your mobo? Do a google search for error beebs for your mobo and I bet you can figure out what it is. Could be anything from a bad stick of ram to a blown vid card to a bad processor.

The trick is to delete the Steam folder AFTER the uninstall-- there seems to usually be things left in there that will screw up a fresh install if you try again. I don't know if any of the updates have changed this yet, but with some versions of Steam, you could never get Registry settings to "stick"-- like changing your connection speed never worked for me-- it always snapped back the next time I launched Steam. My point being-- if you know how to, delete the Registry keys for Steam after you uninstall as well.

In 1.5, you could force OpenGL mode by specifying "-gl" in the CS command line. I don't know if that still works in 1.6. Try setting it in your Launch Options.
