hello dsl-ers and or cable-ers and or satellite-ers, i have recently 'upgraded' to dial up from dsl.. my reason being that i moved and i have to wait the 2-5 months for earthlink to relocate my service.. so while i try to earn the 4000 dollars they want for a reloacation fee.. i have the pleasure of using dial up.... : )  soooooooooo i was thinking... i remember in 1.5 there was a command u could type into the console and it would like hypnotize itself to think that dial up was a connection of cable or soemthing like that.. it would help your ping get a lower if u had dial up.. does anyone remember that? or something like that? does anyone know a command for 1.6 to use that could help the poor dial up-ers? even though i was just playing and it ran decently.. i was 1-0 !  though it took 3 minutes to load the security module.. but um yea if anyone can help itd be greatly appreciated.................

rate 4000 to 6500 (bandwidth cap in bytes per second)
cl_cmdrate 25 to 40 max (how many updates FROM you to the server per second)
cl_updaterate 30 to 45 max (how many updates TO you from the server per second)
net_graph 0 or 1 or 2 or 3 (0 = off, others = different modes)

Those should about do it. You might have to play with them a bit to find the optimal balance. In general, if you lower your overall rate, you need to compensate and lower both the update and cmd rates too. Rate is measured in bytes per second and governs ALL data throughput to and from CS. update and cmd rates are measured in target requests per minute (meaning this is how many CS will try to send or receive. This will be limited by the connection and the client's and server's rate settings).

This is actually why a lot of people complain about choke on CSR. Their settings are too far above the server's settings. The choke is letting them know that the number of requests they are asking for are getting "choked off" because one is set to too low while the other is set too high. The server is saying, "I know you're ASKING for 50 updates a second, but I'm only allowed to give you 40."

I'm sure biggums has his own view on this, and I'm equally sure he'll choose to express it. When it comes right down to it though, you will always get a decent (and smoother) connection if you try to match the server's settings as closely as possible (assuming your connection is stable to begin with of course).

porter is exactly right, and for the record (since i disagree with him frequently about rate settings) if i give advice to max out rates and such, i'm assuming those of you i tell know how to tweak them from server to server, i just reccomend highest settings then move them down to suit your needs, just seems more efficient, but for dial-up, porter has it peRFECTLY RIGht!

Higher settings are better for broadband, but it's really all about your personal connection/situation. My school for instance has something like 8 T1 lines bundled together, but because of all the morons downloading pOrn from Kazaa day and night, I see bandwidth and pings WORSE than dial-up. If you have a connection to yourself though, you can set these a good deal higher.

As Kaoz said, it's best to match it to the server's settings though. CSR is set relatively low, and it's exactly to help make sure everyone is on a level playing field. It won't do you much good to set your rate higher than 8000 here, since Phoenix won't give you any more than that anyway. Your cmd rate can go up to 40-65 or so, and update can go to 50-70 or so.

As long as your ping is decent (below 200) you game play should be smooth. Remember-- these are not set-in-stone numbers! Move them up and down until you see your net graph smooth out. If it looks like a sawtooth on either the top or the bottom, your draining your bandwidth-- your settings are too high. If the game is stuttering and the graph is skipping left-to-right a bit, your settings are too low (or your computer/connection really sucks!)

Remember too that there is a lot more data coming TO you than you are sending. In general, it's more important to be getting those updates from the server than it is to be sending your actions to the server. The logic behind this is simple: if your game isn't getting enough information from the server about where 19 other players are, it won't do you ANY good to be sending more commands to the server about what you're doing (moving, turning, shooting, reloading). Think about it. If you're not receiving data about the 19 other players and what they are doing, it's not going to be much help to be telling the server you're shooting at somebody that was there 10 seconds ago.

hey porter thanx for the help.. even though a good 99.9% of what u said flew right past me... but still i can work on tryin some of those settings but my ping was under 200 so i guess i should be happy .. and i was playing like 13-5 last night with it.. hmm maybe i should save 500 dollars a month and stay with dial-up?  *insert shots in the head here*
