Yea, so i tried connecting to steam and it says error you cant connect to steam either due to ur internet connection (not the case here obviously) or there might be a prob with the steam network.  Well i dont think its that either.  So i just went to the FAQ and it says that these certain ports need to be open.  I dont know where to check if they are, if i have them, if i dont how do i add them, how to open them if they are closed, or anything what so ever about ports (so i assume that my of the previous statements were probably stupid).  If anyone can help i would appreciate it!  I have a dell with intel 4 processor and windows xp if that makes a difference or something.  THANKS

ayo (confused and having problems with the computer as always)

ok, ayo, I'll start...

what kind of ISP do you have? dial-up, DSL, Cable, etc.??  If you're on broadband, do you go through a router, is it a major provider like when I'm at home I'm on SBC Yahoo, etc.  Are you running the WinXP Firewall?  Do you know what that a firewall is?  Didn't you know that Dell is evil?  They're right up there with Starbucks!  Ok, seriously, start with those ISP questions, and hopefully between Porter, slight and I we'll getcha squared away.

Tenshi is on exact;y the same track I would be. The first thing to do is to just try again later. Steam blows-- it's best to get used to it crapping out on you, and be overjoyed if it works the way it should for once.

Failing that, check your connection. The right ports have to be open, like you yourself and Tenshi said, both on your own machine (if XP's firewall is on) and at the router (if there is one).

see look at that! Tenshi comes through with the big techno-babble correct answer!  Having all this junk at home, and then having my dad keep messing it up helps though... comp sci nerd-dom here i come!

by the way, that XP firewall deally really messed up Omega's computer when he was at his house, because his router was running a firewall, and then his computer was running a firewall on top of that!  It darn near gimped his computer from doing anything but web browsing and chatting on AIM, lucky I was there to tell him how to use his computer though...he slapped his forehead after he realized his stupidity.

no i have tried to log on for like a week and a half 2 weeks now...i dont think that is the problem.  I have a cable modem.  I dont know what a router is. i dont know if xp firewall is up.  i have norton antivirus....does that put up a wirewall? (if that is a dumb question that has nothing to do with said topic, ignore it)  How do i check if that firewall is up?  how do i check if those ports are open? how do i find/check the router thingy?  And if this firewall is up and i take it down (i dont know the jargin (sp?) obviously), will that "danger" or cause problems or not protect my comp from things?  Again i know nothing so bear with me.  THANKS!!

Again:  Dell pentium 4 processor, cable modem, windows xp

Ok, a router is a small box that is between your cable modem and your actual computer, it is very similar to a hub except it is "smart" you probably only have one if you have several computers "sharing" that cable modem.  The router "routes" information to the proper computer by issuing each computer an IP.  If you only have one computer on that modem though, your service provider makes sure you have a IP (using something similar, but on a bigger scale).  At any rate, I'm assuming you DO NOT have a router, or you'd probably notice that you have two boxes instead of just one cable modem box.  So next is the firewall...

I'm not sure exactly sure how to alter the firewall settings in XP, I assume there are some settings in the control panel????  I'll help explain what a fire wall is though.  Think of a firewall kind of like a pointer that keeps changing....an example usually helps illustrate this.  if your "true ip" is 100 (which it really can never be, but for simplicity we'll say it is 100).  A firewall hides that from things your computer doesn't want to talk to...so it creates a "fake" ip that it assigns say address 999.  This means ip 999 points to ip 100.  So you see that more then one firewall can get confusing...firewalls keep out things you don't want.  That is every connection has a "port" http (normal web browsing) is port 80, counterstrike servers are 27015.  Ports are like channels.  Your computer "changes" channel based on what it wants/needs to do.  Firewalls are an attempt to help control which ports can talk to your computer, you probably want port 80 and 27015 to be open.  Closed ports go to 999 and don't go further, open ports go to 999 and then are "routed" to port 100 once the firewall determines it is "ok".  I hope that helps...

Yes, norton does carry firewall software, though I believe it is a seperate entity from the normal virus protection software.  Taking the down the firewall depends on how good/bad the firewall is to begin with.  Frankly, I've never found the XP firewall to do anything but confuse issues.  Router firewalls on the other hand are usually pretty invaluable, because you can code them how you need.  In theory though, I believe you should be able to only open the ports you need, and not have to worry about it.  Sadly, I can only give you an understanding of these things better, I don't know XP well.  Like in this case, it "tries to do too much" for my purposes.

I won't guarntee all of that information is 100% accurate, but those definitions have served me as far as I need them to thus far...Porter I'm sure will correct me if i'm horribly steering you in the wrong direction.

Try taking your machine to a friend's house, and use their connection. If it works there, then you've effectively eliminated something inside your machine as the problem and you should check your router and/or ISP to make sure Steam's data is getting through. If it doesn't work at your friend's place, it's pretty safe to assume that the connection outside your machine is fine, and you need to check XP's firewall, etc., especially if your friend's computer can connect to Steam from their home connection.

Thank you for joining Computer Troubleshooting 101, class dismissed.

do u think it would be easier if i just uninstalled and reinstalled steam??  Is that goin to be horrilby painful?  Cause i was able to play steam before, then i stopped for a while and randomly it just said i cant connect.  Maybe its b/c i havent logged on in a while?  Also, i believe i deleted cs stuff that wasnt steam stuff that i didnt think i needed any more and i believe i checked here before i deleted it.  Maybe this is the problem??  Although i doubt it is this b/c i thought i checked it by playing steam after i deleted it.  Well whatever, i hope i can play soon!

the worst part of installing steam is getting the fairly large downloads, if you want just CS i think it is 350MB?? if you want full Steam with DoD, team fortress, etc, it's 750MB I think...  I just installed it on this computer (since I got a new one) without a problem.  Some say that's lucky, but I've put steam on three computers now without steam related problems...

you can try it...the worst that will happen is that you'll be right where you are now    Anyway, good luck, and may the force be with you.

Just be sure to uninstall Steam correctly (using the Add/Remove Program control panel) and also remember to go in and manually delete the old Steam folder after uninstall. People have complained that the folder holds over the very things than can corrupt a steam install, so just uninstalling and reinstalling won't fix the problem.
